I'm a bit confused. Maybe I'm missing something here. David Bercot states that at the beginning Pharoah hardens his own heart, and God hardens his heart later on, but what I'm reading is that God hardened his heart at first.
And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.
    Exodus 7:13 KJV

@Samual Leforte I checked with David, and he was able to check into this for a quick reply. He couldn't remember what he said in the message on this point, but he looked at his notes, and found that he hadn't intended to say the text says that Pharaoh first hardened his heart. I looked at the video, and it turns out he did say that, so that must have been a misstatement on his part.
Here's what David intended to convey (partly in my words, since he sent me this in a voice message): Pharaoh already had a wicked heart, and God didn't give that to him. He foretold that he'd harden his heart, but didn't say at what point. It's not like Pharaoh was a godly person or ready to repent, like the King of Nineveh. Pharaoh's answer to Moses' request to go into the wilderness to pray was not just "no," but to increase the Israelites' work. That shows that he was already a harsh person. The question is if Pharaoh would have said yes if God hadn't hardened his heart, and the text doesn't say that.
Thanks for pointing out this blooper! And thanks for the insight into the Hebrew text; I'll have to remember that.
      -Lynn

Exodus 7:13 would be better translated as this.
And Pharaoh strengthened his heart and did not listened to the Word of Yahweh (the Lord).
      The LXX says
      Exodus 7:13
13καὶ κατίσχυσεν ἡ καρδία Φαραώ, καὶ οὐκ εἰσήκουσεν αὐτῶν, καθάπερ ἐνετείλατο αὐτοῖς Κύριος.
And Pharaoh strengthened his heart and did not listened to them as the Lord had commanded.
      However
I will harden the heart of Pharaoh and multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt.
*The Hebrew reads the same in vs 3.

I find Bercot's explanation of Romans 9 to be a confusing mess, no offence to him, I think he means well but he is simply not believing what the text says in plain language. Yes, God elects some for salvation and lets others perish in their sins, and there is zero unfairness about this because sinners are fully responsible for their sins and God is righteous in saving whomever He wishes on the basis of Christ's sacrifice for the sins of His elect. God does not owe anybody anything, we are all guilty sinners, God does not even owe anyone the chance to even hear the gospel, in fact many people throughout history have died without ever hearing the gospel the last 2000 years.....are you going to call God unfair they never heard the gospel and never had a chance? This is absurd to say the least, God owes nobody the hearing of the gospel nor salvation, it is MERCY, mercy is an unmerited thing and He has mercy on whomever He wishes to have mercy, nobody is entitled to mercy. The Romans text is plain language, God's election stands, human will is an afterthought when it comes to salvation, yes you hear the gospel and must believe it, but the very reason you believe the gospel is because God elected you to believe it before the world began. That is not coercing your will, that is the mystery of divine election despite your will.
Acts 13:48 "And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed."

Cain was told by God, “why has your countenance fallen? don’t you know that if you do well that you’ll be accepted?” But then God decreed he go kill his brother? And other perfect examples are what Joseph’s brothers meant for evil, God meant for good, and there was restoration in the family. Likewise, Esau and Jacob restored their relationship, as well. God blessed Esau’s family, too. What then? Esau was hated and despised, yet blessed and full of forgiveness? Something is off.

Through the Calvinist view, one can easily blame God for everything. However, if this was so, we need to ask ourselves, why did the Lord Jesus Christ tell His followers: “If any man will come after me” (Mat 16:24)? "If" implies the freedom of choice which is given to every individual by God Himself. Therefore this shows that man is not a mere subject, but instead the object of God's love which derives from the freedom.

    • @christianmama2441

Let me remind you that there are people all over the globe that are born and never hear the gospel of Christ. So your theory of free will here is highly problematic, God never even gave a chance to many to even hear the gospel, are you going to tell me God is unfair in not allowing people to hear the gospel in their lifetime? Look, the calvinistic view is the following: Adam and Eve plunged the entire human race into sin, we are born enslaved to sinful desires, dead spiritually, unworthy of God's love, but God in His mercy sent His Son Jesus Christ to rescue SOME out of the pool of sinners to be with Him in all eternity. God does not owe anyone any love or mercy, the very fact some are saved is pure grace and mercy, not something that is owed to any human. Humans are fully responsible for their sins, unless Jesus Christ shows them mercy and has atoned for their sins. SO, both human responsability for sin is affirmed in calvinism, and also the mercy and grace of God to save whomever He wishes is also affirmed. The Bible teaches both these things and although they have a paradox, we must believe by faith what Scriptures says and quit trying to use logic to even begin to understand the mind of God when it comes to divine election.

People are not born with an equal inclination to do the good and the evil, but are born ENSLAVED to the sinful desires of their corrupted heart (this is the devastating effect of being born in Adam, we are corrupted by sin from birth). If we truly were born with equal power to do the good and the evil, then you should see some people walking around who chose to NEVER sin and therefore they could keep the commandments and go to heaven without Jesus, but you don't see anything like that, in fact the Bible says there are none righteous, not even one, only Jesus is sinless and that's why He came to rescue us from this complete slavery to sin that we are born into . Jesus told us that apart from Him we can do nothing good (John 15:5), that means everything the unbeliever does is not acceptable to God, even though they may appear good to humanity. Example: someone feeds a hungry person and gives themselves praise instead of praising God for this deed, that's a form of self idolatry and it is sin against God.

26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.

28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

If Calvinism were TRUE then Romans 9:16 would not use the word MERCY for describing what God does, because arbitrary condemnation is UNmerciful.
Just judgment and justice requires "judgment according to one's deeds" as the Bible foretells will happen in the end... mercy in between for us to turn... anyone to have past washed away, this is grace, and make a new start. Then just judgment in the end based on this new start. That is both just, equal opportunity and merciful both.

If Jesus did not die on the cross for those sins, they could of never been forgiven by God, because God is just and righteous and needs a just basis for forgiveness. This is called penal substitutionary death on the cross, Christ died in the place of the sinner, for the sinner's sins, taking the penalty for their very sins. The question is, do you believe Jesus died for YOUR personal sins on that cross, then rose from the grave the third day, and on that basis you are forgiven of your sins? or Jesus died for the sins of others but not yours? Answer that for yourself.

From the hands of the powerful one of Jacob, from there is the shepherd ** THE STONE OF ISRAEL ** 25 He is from the God of your father ** AND HE WILL HELP YOU ** and he is with the Almighty,
    .
    John 15:26-16:2
When ** THE HELPER ARRIVES ** that I will send YOU from the Father, the spirit of the truth, which proceeds from the Father, that one will bear witness about me; 27 and YOU, in turn, are to bear witness, because YOU have been with me from when I began.16 “I have spoken these things to ** YOU THAT YOU MAY NOT BE STUMBLED ** 2 Men will expel YOU
    .
[Name of person] is no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses ---->> Men will expel YOU
    .
Did that HELP or did you STUMBLE?
    .
Now go back to Romans Chapter 9:
    .
    Romans 9:25-26
It is as he says also in Ho·se´a: “Those not my people I will call ‘my people,’ and her who was not beloved ‘beloved’; 26 and in the place where it was said to them, ‘YOU are not my people,’ there they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’”
    .
[Name of person] is no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses ---->> ‘YOU are not my people,’
    .
THE STONE of STUMBLING is Joseph!
    .
If that helped then, pay it forward.
    .
"and YOU, in turn, are to bear witness"

Maybe N.T. Wright has it right on this passage.

David is a very pleasant speaker. But he continually attacks a straw man. He takes one Calvinist idea, mixes it with one or more of his Arminian ideas (or presuppositions), and then says that it doesn't make any sense. Of course, such a mixture is logically incoherent. But he's not disproving Calvinism, he's only showing that a Calvinist-Arminian mixture is incoherent. I can agree with that.
Bercot continually states that Calvinists believe in an arbitrary predestination. But Calvinists don't believe in arbitrary predestination. Anyone who has read the Westminster Confession of Faith knows the distinction between first and second causes. He should read historic Reforned systematics -- at least the basic confessions, such as the WCF and Three Forms of Unity -- before commenting about what Calvinists believe.
Romans 9:18-21 clearly is (indirectly) a discussion of the very question how a person can be faulted if God's hardening of Pharoah happened on the basis of His providential action. And it isn't clear to me why the present context (of explaining the Jew-Gentile relationship to the promise of God through Abraham) would make any of the examples in Romans 9 irrelevant to the question of God's irresistible providential rule of the universe.
