    WOW! Really good job with this 3 part video. My Evap went bad in my 98xj, along with the heater core. I have a whole new appreciation for what the guys who do my mechanic work went through to fix this. I had NO idea how much work is involved in changing out those 2 items. They charged me $1200 to do this job, and after watching your 3 part series, I think I got a bargain at that price. There is no way I would attempt this myself, but like I said, next time I visit my guys, I am going to let them know how much I appreciate what they went through to fix my jeep, and best part is everything worked as before when they were finished with it. It is an amazingly complex job, in my opinion, thanks again for your efforts on this video series. Much appreciated and one of the more thorough ones I have seen.

    Just watched all three of these videos. I'm getting my Jeep back from the mechanic this week after getting a new motor but found out I need a new evaporator. I want my A/C but can't justify the extra cost for him to do it so I'm going to be tackling this pretty soon. This video is extremely helpful. I appreciate you taking the time to make it.

      Doing it yourself is the way to go. It is not a technically hard job, just time consuming. You will save a lot of money, and with just putting in a new engine, I’m sure it will be nice to not to spend it.
      I did have my mechanic reattach the ac lines at the firewall. I could not get those to reconnect no matter what I did. I don’t think most people have that issue.
      Glad the videos helped.
      I am going to do this on my other Jeep at some point. If I make a video for that one it will be straight to the point haha.

      Yeah it's a lot to pay someone for when it's something i could live without. I'd be a little more apprehensive about doing it myself without a good video though.
      I don't think you need to take the time to make a new one. It's good seeing all the mishaps before they happen to you lol. Do you remember which evaporator you bought? One I looked at said it wasn't sealed under pressure and the others didn't have that info. It'd be good to know it's not going to leak after all that work.

      It's a good idea to dab a little dielectric grease on the ground connections where you sanded off the paint, then tighten.
      The electrical connection will be less prone to oxidation & higher resistance.

    use dielectric grease on your ground connections. Makes them last a vary long time instead of a year or two. dielectric grease is available at any auto parts store, I use a decent brand such as Permatex. First found about that stuff when taking apart Honda 1990's electric connectors on my accord.

      Jimmy Mendoza Thanks. I’m glad I decided to film it and that it helped.
      As for the AC lines. After much struggling I ended up taking it to my mechanic and had him reconnect them since I was having him look at something else. I should have asked how he did it because I could not get them to connect, no matter how much I tried.

    I have a 2000 Jeep cherokee 4.0 it will not take freon.. Has been vacuumed. what will cause this...All help appreciated...i tried jumping it over from the switch and it blew my big 20 amp fuse. Twice... you could hear the rpms raise a little but didnt kick the clutch in. Im showing both sides hot/power on the low side pressure switch with a test light. Ubnless i unplug the high side. Then 1 side shows power other dont but bridge over then and dont blow fuse but dont cycle clutch. It will also blow a fuse if i try to bridge it over from the relay.. However i can kick the clutch in by running 1 wire from hot on the compressor to the hot on the battery then clutch works... Still wont take freon. Help...

    Hi there. Thank you so much for all the tips etc. I have a 2.5 diesel XJ from 1998 and I believe I have an A/C refrigerant leak from behind the dash which means I need to change the drier etc. So basically I need to do what you have just done. We’re your A/C components leaking behind there at all? Does it blow icy cold now? Many thanks, Chris.

    • @simpleoverlander
      @simpleoverlander  4 роки тому

      I actually only went into the HAVAC system due to the heater core. I just changed out the A/C part since I was already working on the system. If the leak is from that area though, you should have a better operating system by changing it out. However, there could be other issues as well. My buddy just did an entire A/C flush and change-out on his system by himself (for the first time) since he was having issues.
      The only way to really know is to get that leak fixed and take the next steps, if necessary, from there. If the leak is small though, you should be able to add refrigerant and your system should blow cold air at least temporarily. If not, then it could be a compressor or other part issue. May be worth it to get it diagnosed and then try to fix it yourself if you don't want someone else to do it.
      Best of luck!

    Thanks for the headlight connector tip. I put LED's in my 99 XJ and found out only the high beams had been working after testing the bulbs in my YJ (put same leds in it, 30 bucks on ebay. Was then able to pull my light bar for the car wash ) Also my heater wont blow downward so Ill check the vacuum line and actuator. Was that the door you said the fan ring would block?
    Correction: high beams only operate on high or low beam setting.

    • @simpleoverlander
      @simpleoverlander  5 років тому +1

      If you can get air out of the floor vent there could be a couple of reasons. If your fan changes speeds then at least your ok there. If not, then that could be the root of the issue. But if all blower speeds work ok then it could be the air line, the control unit itself, the actuator, or the door inside the box has stopped working. If you have access to another control unit try switching that first to make sure the easiest thing isn’t the issue. Then look at the lines and actuators. Low air pressure could cause that as well, so test the PSI and see if that is ok. I am not sure what the correct psi is but read that low psi can lead to issues like that. If it is the door then that will be the hardest to deal with since the core box has to come out. I think that is my issue in my other XJ, but that will have to wait.

    • @mrtrimmier
      @mrtrimmier 5 років тому

      @@simpleoverlander im betting actuator or vac line. Thanks for the heads up. It makes a wheezing sound and air is forced out of the side def vents so the door isnt opening. All else works fine. BTW if your gauges stop working suddenly pull your radio and dash trim and pull the cluster out and reseat it w some corr inhibitor. I left the screws out last time since it all snaps together so I can do it all in a brief stop.

    How do I refill the A/C system? Is it just an a/c recharge can or something special

    • @simpleoverlander
      @simpleoverlander  4 роки тому +1

      Luke Doherty If you just need to add refrigerant then there are cans you can buy to do it yourself, but you need to buy the reusable gauge to connect them too. It is just a matter of connecting it to the plug on the AC tube(per the instructions on the can)
      HOWEVER, this is a touchy subject. Technically you should have a pro do it so that they can properly monitor the pressure and also control the amount that is in the system.
      Depending on what type you add from a can, it could do more harm than good in the long run. Best to do some research and decide for yourself what you want to do. Good luck!
      I personally add my own but know it is a risk. I have not had any issues (so far!)

I basically had to press my chest against the steering wheel while taking 2 hammers and using the ends of them to hold down the spring bracket (I think that is what it was) on each side of the column. It was a real pain with many attempts.

      Great question! It has been about 1.5 years and everything is working as it should when it comes to the core. No issues, no leaks, and my heat is HOT!
      However, one thing to note as an extra step... While everything is out, make sure the blower motor seal is replaced or reinforced, and that area on the engine side of the firewall is cleaned out well. I ended up with a wet floor because of water leaks in that area. I had to remove parts in the engine bay again to gain access, and put sealant in that area. It solved the leak, but wished I had known that when all of it was apart for this job!

      @@simpleoverlander thanks for the heads up.
      I picked up my 99 xj a few months back, and now that its colder I found that the heater doesn't work.
      Then I found your vid and thought "nope!" I didnt want to go through all the steps, eventhough the job is pretty straightforward...just a lot of screws and connectors to keep track of.
      So I flushed the heater core. The blockage was so much, that nothing but chunks and grime came out.
      Tested it, and got just a smidget of heat, condensation on the lower-center portion of the windshield, and the all-so-lovely smell of antifreeze.
      But no leaks out the heater core unit. You're vid showed why.
      So long story short, I'm going to replace the main radiator (because I don't want that dirty thing going out on me out on the trails), heater core, and ac evaporator.
      ...and run a drainage tube to the outside of the vehicle.
      Anyway...
      You're vid is the best of all the "Jeep XJ heater core" vids out there.
      Keep up with the awesome content.
