You like staying in the creative process of making maps and world building. It's like video games. Sure you could finish the game in 10 hours but you stay around and rack up hundreds of hours.
CJ Carter Why the aggression? I’m just pointing out that sometimes it’s best not to overthink, and especially with Fantasy names no one’s gonna care or notice. And you can always fill in the worldbuilding gaps afterwards, once someone does.
Hi! I draw maps from a young age only with Bic pens by moderating the pressure, but now that some of my friends are interested in D&D I wold like to start making a detailed and accurate map. Can you make a video where you show your tools for drawing maps? Pens / brushes / sheets etc...?
Both the detailed map and this simplified version are amazing, but personally i liked this one better. To me it just looks better (Not saying the original was bad). And it's faster! Which is a BIG bonus!
Interesting. I would say my largest time consumer is deciding what to draw and where to put it. So a 30hr map easily 50% is my waffling and being creative. The next biggest time water would be time on details ie. Individual trees or the mt. Technique. Simplifying technique and reusing a previous compass rose design would save some time. But for me not the majority of my time. Thanks for another great video. John aka the Angry Dwarf
I hear you there! Creativity will take as long as it needs to, and longer than I’d prefer sometimes. Painting minis is the same way. So much time scratching my head in indecision about what colors to use.
Not sure if you're familiar with it, or not, but there is a really neat program called "Otherworld Mapper" that is really good and inexpensive. It's a really snappy program with an active and responsive developer.
Good tip. Smudging things is always a problem when you are left handed where things are done left to right. My hand often has ink or graphite smudged on it.
If that was a map for the players I probably would have changed the compass rose to have east or west be the up and down direction. It's the direction of the rising/setting sun. It was also used in Western Europe for a long time to put the Holy Land as "up".
One of THE best and fastest ways to get super satisfying maps in super fast fashion for me has been using Wonderdraft. I have a HUGE world map which is super detailed and I made the progress like 5 times faster than doing in by hand, even though I had 0 experience with graphical design, using programs like Photoshop etc., and drew it all using a mouse with a bit lower sensitivity. And it has a black and white theme which is awesome for these super fast under an hour maps. It elevate terrain features create just the best coastlines and naming regions and drawing mountains and forests has never been faster. Best 20$ I ever spent!
I don't know if this will get heard because i'm not a patron but here it goes: i want you to make an updated video on drawing a map in color. I saw your video but i like to have a better analysis on which color to use, which brand to buy and how to use them in tandum with sakura pigma micron pens. If you see this and do this i'll be grateful. Thank You
Do you guys usually do coloring for oceans? I usually shade it in with pencil but that gets messy as I'm sure you can imagine, especially with smaller islands
So, you're only challenging yourself to redraw a map you already made? Youre not quickly making a new map from scratch? I feel quite mislead by the title. But I did like your video on map making sites and I used Azgar's map generator to make a map that I liked. Then I downloaded Touch Blocker to be able to lock my tablet screen so that I could put a paper over it to trace the shape. From there Ive filled in and added details. The longest part of the process seem to be two things, putting in the geographic details and deciding national boundaries and how the former affects the latter.
@@WASD20 But working from scratch the majority of the work time I think comes from deciding the geography of the land. And its worse the more you think about the way that rivers flow, how the mountain ranges form and how thick of forest you can have at higher elevations. Or Im overthinking things. lol But I definitely need to add nation boundaries for the sake of the nations themselves. I see most fantasy maps simply add the name of the nation through the territory and then leaves space between there and the next territory, whatever it may be. Although geological features form natural boundaries as well. The more harsh it is to cross a geological feature the less likely a nation is to try to claim land on the other side. Then add in your level of magic and adjust accordingly.
Deciding where things go is certainly time. Consuming. In the case of Ezora, I did a rough sketch on a separate sheet of paper before I ever laid pen to paper. Probably took me about one hour to for the land masses and make decisions. As for national boundaries, the thing you need to remember is that for most of history they have been very imprecise. Drawing a line for a border really commits you to a society that is quite advanced and has borders that everyone can agree on. In most times and places in history, borders have been a bit more loose, and a large bit of text across the region is a better representation of that. Still, I have seen fantasy maps with national borders. So it’s do-able.
Lol. Well, I traced the coastline, but I basically traced the 4 or 5 hour map from an original rough sketch that took an hour or so and I did not include that in my 4 to 5 hours.
Ok so im here at 85 views 14 likes and 3 comments ill shut the video for 1 minute and see what happens Edit: absolutely nothing happened youtube doesn't get high anymore
do you get alot of random people trying to touch your head? cuz you got a perfect head to touch ... one cant help themselves they just got to touch it.
Of course it took less time You traced an already existing coastline and new precisely where names & labels would be. Redo the process from scratch with a new design, no tracing or rehashing previous work and then I'd believe you.
It’s good but it’s not a new design or idea. You just traced a map and you knew where everything was going to go. Perhaps I missed the point of the video.
The point is to find a quicker and simpler style. Comparing the same world in two different styles helps me really isolate the styles and techniques and have a more accurate feel for how much time certain techniques save.
I think I understand what Thinking Machine is trying to say, this video is a great way of showing how to replicate a map you already have quickly however, had this been a new map altogether, you would have spent more than 40 minutes just trying to decide where mountains, rivers, towns, villages and so on should be placed.
Magmatic Miniatures yeah, I didn’t realise he was just talking about style and techniques. I thought it was some kind of challenge to create a map really quickly, which would be good for a quick 1 day campaign or something. I’m not hating on the video, I just expected something else.
I like how your 40 minute Map is better then my 4 hour map, and your 4 hour map is better then my 4 months map 😂
do you have a pdf for the map? can i see it?
Lol you're not alone

Good tips, like the video. I would like to see how it compares starting a map from scratch rather than re-drawing an existing map.
It's like you knew what I was procrastinating.
I think I'd spend more than a few hours just deciding what to name things....
This is the real struggle.
You just have to go the Rick and Morty way- Globzar Grabgob, Floobster Zangibomb, Hoojster Ulmidont.
@@jagelsdorf1385 Did you just really want to reference Rick and Morty? Did you just want other people to know that you've seen it?

You can do your outline and upload it to Canva to add trees, mountains, water and other features as well as typing labels.
Looks great! Simple and effective.
Thanks, Jon!

Papermate Flair. Super common. Easy to find.
I think the left island of Ezora looks like France...
