You're an artist as soon as you occupy yourself with a creative process and get a result out of it (either material or non material), or don't; even when you are in a learning process (like me); even when your impostor syndrome seem to be quite severe (like mine 😅); even when you spend a day/week or two without creating (like... me 🥲); So, you're an artist if you even for 2% feel like it and no one can take that away from you ^__^ Fantastic drawing and sightings 💛
I love that! It's so empowering to acknowledge the struggle of a creative path and still feel proud and confident in calling yourself an artist. I wish you luck in your endeavors! And, thank you so much😊💜
I've been thinking about it since this video came back and I think the reason I don't call myself an artist is bc of the expectations people have for the word artist. They expect you to have gone to school for it and be extremely skilled or "talented". They expect you to have a job in the field or WANT a job in the field even though a lot of people use it as an escape from their current work. As a hobbyist I tend to call myself a crafter or maker instead bc I like multiple forms of art making and that feels more like the right title for me. Not that you couldn't call yourself an artist if you do more than just paint, but it's just what I feel more comfortable with.
This definitely resonates. I think of being an artist as just showing up and actually making art. If we are making art regularly then we are artists. We are all at different stages on our path. I wonder if much of this way of thinking comes from the past, where artists were seen as the geniuses and inventors. Like it was all just a natural gift. Sure I think some are more gifted than others, but even the masters were constantly learning and making mistakes in their sketchbooks. So as long as we are on the journey then we are artists. Take away the pressure of having to be a master, and just enjoy the process and naturally we will get better. I love your colour palette by the way, it's very calming. And you have a very healthy and encouraging attitude to all of this. Keep at it :o)
Absolutely, your perspective is spot on! Being an artist is about consistently showing up and engaging in the creative process, regardless of where we are in our individual skill levels. It's liberating to shake off the notion of needing to be a 'genius' and instead focus on the joy of creation and growth. And thank you for the kind words about my work and attitude - it means a lot! 😊
Thank you so much! 💜 I’m so glad you enjoyed the painting-and hearing that my vlogs feel calming really means a lot. I love sharing these everyday moments and it’s wonderful to know they bring a bit of peace to your day! 😊
@@ysvyri it’s a fun one it’s my 2nd time doing it it’s crazy to witness all the improvement 🤞🏻 this time round I only focused on lady heads cause it’s something I will actually do instead of the usual where it’s every gender, ages and also fantasy creatures 🥰 gotta narrow it down otherwise it’s so overwhelming
I love what you said in this video! Sometimes (myself included) we define our worth by where we work or the money we make from our art. But really it's the fact that people who make art are artists. If you have time, I would recommend reading the manga Witch Hat Atelier - it's about the journey of a girl becoming a witch but there are many parallels to what it means to be an artist.
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you enjoyed my video! As for Witch Hat Atelier, I recently bought the first episode to read! I'm excited to dive into it 😊💜
This video hit me personally; while I feel (most of the time!) good about the art I make these days, I still have the hesitation to call myself an "artist" to others because I still have the knee-jerk reaction to put professionals on a pedestal. I appreciate you addressing the common "imposter syndrome" feeling because I honestly think that knee-jerk reaction that pops up for me in my life still is like a strange way for me to avoid the possibility of "failing" once I'm put in the spotlight or put under the pressure of a label or position of authority. 😯
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Impostor syndrome can sneak up on us, even when we're creating art we're proud of. Remember, it's okay to feel that way, and your journey is unique to you. But, putting people on pedestals, even highly skilled professionals, doesn't serve us; it only distances us from our own potential. It's key to keep a healthy perspective on that! Keep creating and don't let those doubts hold you back. You're on your own path, and it's perfectly okay to take it at your own pace. 🎨💜
Such a beautiful message... and beautiful art AND beautiful editing! I'm loving your videos - and especially when you mentioned that some of your favorite artists have never been "successful", that really resonated. I see so much amazing, thoughtful art that seems to just disappear into the void of the internet.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you're enjoying my videos 😊💜 I watched a documentary some time ago about Francis Bacon and his life as an artist and put into stark contrast for me how the internet has effected art and made it, in some minds, a throw-away thing. The drive for more external validation through clicks and views (although sometimes totally valid, if one is trying to make a living) can totally impact our own relationship with our work!
@@ysvyri I do feel like there's a strong disconnect - at least for some people - from art as a process and a final piece that deserves appreciation. We've never before had access to this much visual art, just a click away, and that has its up- and downsides. :')

I've always wanted to make a video on that topic someday and talk about it, thank you for this, as I too had such a hard time accepting myself and calling myself an artist. Only recently I've called myself an artist in an introduction which I'm so proud of. However I still struggle with impostor syndrome sometimes and it's hard to identify myself as an artist at those times.
Thank you so much for enjoying my video and your kind words! 😊💜 I am so glad to hear you've started calling yourself an artist proudly, too. You might always have some kind of impostor syndrome, but if you push ahead with your goals anyway, you're already beating it! I hope you make your video on this topic when you're ready 😊 the world needs your voice!
Anyone who can create something, is an artist. Art is what differentiates us from other animals. Especially the ability of reflecting our world through art. Not everyone is a great artist. But everyone is capable of drawing something and expressing something through it. So they are artists, albeit beginner artists. Lovely piece by the way. I used to do digital art for years, but switched back to traditional mediums like watercolors, Gouache and alcohol markers. It may not be as forgiving and easy to control as digital, but I kinda feel like digital lacks personality for me. It looks kinda bland and soulless, imo. Like those animated Disney and Pixar movies compared to the traditional animated films. Its hard to describe, but thats how it feels to me.
Ah! thank you for sharing your thoughts! Interestingly, I personally feel we should all strive to stay in the "beginners mind" as much as possible, but that's a story for another video 😊 And thank you too for liking my painting!
In defense of digital art, I don't think it's the medium that matters but what the artist chooses to do with it. You can create art that looks as if was created traditionally and no one would even know the difference. You just have to deliberately go out of your way to create that look. I think it's less that digital art looks soulless and more that everyone is just creating art for social media likes and the art was going to come across as soulless regardless of the techniques the artist chose to use. I think it's more the time we're living in than it is the medium. And perhaps there's a bit of a problem with the tutorials available for learning digital painting. Few of them are focused on recreating a traditional or expressive look even though it is 100% possible using digital. My theory is this is byproduct of so many tutorials being created by and for those in the concept art industry. The end goal is to get a job with movie or video game companies who answer to shareholders and so want something soulless. And finally, I think many people's first exposure to art are the products of video games or Disney movies. So that is what they want to recreate in their own work. Many beginner artists have little exposure to anything else and the various algorithms on the internet aren't doing much to give them a wider exposure. But again, that has nothing to do with the medium, only people's perception of it.
@@Mystic_Dragon_Art Yeah I definitely agree with you on it not being specifically the medium that’s ’soulless.’ I do primarily traditional art myself, but when I was younger I would look at digital art and go ‘woah, I can feel the emotion and effort put into that’ vs how rare it is that I react like that now to art in that medium. All it needs is a little bit of genuineness that it once had.
"People who kept creating beyond childhood" That's why I'm not an artist, I'm incapable of making anything creative, just boring, ugly copies of other perople's drawings, nothing original, nothing. And that's why there is the mysticism, because artists DO have something special that separates them from me other than just hard work, and I'm yet to see any proof of otherwise. I mean, you said yourself "as long as you're creating something new, with soul, you're an artist". BY YOUR OWN VERY DEFINITION, I CAN NEVER BE AN ARTIST! I am not an artist.... and I hate myself for this...
