Fun fact: Bernie Sanders can run in Polish presidential elections. In Poland to easily get Polish citizenship one of your parents also needs to have Polish citizenship, and since his father was a Polish Jew this is just a technicality. All he'd need is 100,000 signatures.

Imagine how proud his dad would be to see how his son turned out. He came here as an immigrant, grew to love this country and its people and his son spends his life serving this country and advocating for its people. Bernie said his dad wasn't a flag-waving type, but "he loved this country in a very, very deep way." I think it's time for the chronic flag-wavers, and not much else, to put down those flags and put their focus on what the flag represents. They seem to have "forgotten".

This is a great reminder to know our roots. I often try to place myself in my mother's shoes back in 1951 when they bombed her Korean village. She lost her family in that war and lost more when she came to America. She'll never be the same person and still can't talk on it, but I like to research that war so that I don't forget the trauma that built this woman of steel.
One day, maybe she'll be healed enough to talk about it and release it from herself.

This is interesting as my paternal grandmother's mother also came from Galicia to NYC in the early 1900s and died not long after in the Flu Pandemic of 1918 on the Lower East Side. She had just given birth to my late grandmother in a tenement a few days earlier. As she and her husband worked in sweatshops in the garment district like many Jewish immigrants, they had very little money and she was buried in a cemetery for indigent Jews on Staten Island where her headstone still stands. My grandmother was adopted by a Jewish couple from Chicago after a year in some sort of orphanage. It was extremely difficult to get her history as NY is a closed adoption state but we were able to do it when she was in her 90s due to a new law for those born before 1920. Thank you for sharing Bernie's ancestry as it mimics part of mine that no one heard about. I only knew his father was from Poland but seeing that Galicia turned into part of Poland and Ukraine, this makes sense.

Hi and thanks for dropping by! We're sorry to hear that recent changes to your AncestryDNA ethnicity estimate have caused you some confusion. We're happy to explain why your results update every now and again.
Don’t worry - your DNA doesn't change! What changes is the amount of data we have available and advancements in the science we use to calculate your estimate. We’re continually adding additional samples to the reference panel we use to determine your ethnicity estimate and we’ve also incorporated new insights in DNA science into the algorithm we use to analyze your sample. Together, our larger reference panel and latest algorithm let us provide results that are even more precise. DNA science is always evolving, and so are we. DNA ethnicity estimates are updated from time to time based on advances in DNA science and an increasing number of samples in our reference panel. With each update, we continue to add new regions and communities, in an effort to make your results even more precise.
As for the fact that some regions are broader than other, it's important to bear in mind that AncestryDNA ethnicity estimates are based on available data. Ancestry uses established baseline ethnicities taken from living people with verified roots in a particular area. The 40,017 people whose DNA is used is called our reference panel. We then take your sample and compare it with each of these reference panels, repeat 40 times and provide you with the mean average in the form of your ethnicity estimate. Naturally our members desire the maximum level of precision possible so that they can reveal the clearest picture of their origins science allows. However if we do not have enough data on a particular region it is more difficult to offer such precision. However more and more people are taking our test everyday and so we do hope that you will see more specific geographies in your DNA estimate over time. These changes should consist in breaking down broad regions into more specific regions.
If you ever have any questions about a particular change, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Before he became Elias Sanders, he was Elye (Eliyahu) Gitman, the son of Yehuda, born in Stopnica, Galicia (by then, under the hegemony of the Imperial Russia). On May 26, 1921, he made his way to Antwerp, Belgium and boarded the SS Lapland, which brought him to New York City on June 5, 1921. There he joined his maternal uncle, Abraham Louis Horn, in Brooklyn. How he got Sanders from Gitman is another story.

Henry Louis Gates Jr. I truly love you! Thank you for never letting us forget where we came from. It's Priceless! Bless you! I'm from to Occaneechi band of the Saponi Nation, black and white! I am a member of Ancestry and have found family back to 1824, but came to a road block with names being spelled wrong and such. HELP! I'm alone and I need to know where I came from. If you could help it would mean the world to me.

Grand parents and parents should always share their history with the new generations. That will prevent falling into discriminatory and self entitlement attitudes, and most especially lead us to appreciate our nation by truly uplifting good virtues and values.

I know I am very fortunate…. I know so much about my family…and for generations, they were all very good about journaling. Clear back to the 1600’s(witch trials in salem Massachusetts) I have all the journals and because some recorded births and death in rural areas back in the 1700’s, I donated the journals and in exchange, they gave me “copies”…. So I feel good that they will be preserved in a museum.

Bernie is my favorite senator. (I moved from New York to Vermont a couple of years ago and am proud to be a Vermonter now.) So naturally I watched this video. Boy, what an awful life his dad had before he came to America! I'm so glad he married, had children and found some peace and joy. I know where Bernie got his strong moral character and good citizenship from. His dad, I'm sure, is proudly looking down from Heaven.

My grandmother & grandfather born in the 1890s, came to the US from Eastern Europe in the 1920s. When the depression hit in the 1930s, they said this time was no where near as bad as where they came from. Also naturalized they were proud to be citizens of America. No one gave them anything, started with the meager money they had built a business. That was the American Dream.
