Alanis wrote this after returning from a trip to India. She's expressing her gratitude for life's lessons. The nakedness symbolises her rawness and vulnerability by being open about these subjects.
This. Alanis started in the industry as a kid. The Jagged Little Pill album catapulted her to international fame and, like a lot of people in that situation, it was not an unmixed blessing. As I understand it, she took the trip to India to get away from the fame roller coaster and this song was one of the results.
@@chrisg8767 Everything I see in regards to famous people reaffirms my idea that fame is a golden cage. More of them should take a break, especially if they get famous when they are young, and experience some time to themselves in a place away from other people. A nice quiet location and not one of those stupid "retreats" where celebs go for a week of pampering.
I believe the nudity as always represents a rebirth, but more it's her accepting and being proud of her body, while it isn't the typical Hollywood/MTV view of perfect and sexy. (AM is short and just naturally a little "hippy", also I think she's at a healthier weight for herself than on JLP). All of this, coupled with her voice and song writing, make her, to me anyway, one of the sexiest and all around most beautiful famous people.
Alanis was so ahead of her time. Check out "Uninvited", live performance--it'll give you chills. She also started out her career as a rapper, and is currently married to a rapper. "Thank you India" I think is a reference to a trip she took where she gained a good amount of serenity, iirc.
To the meaning of this song: You will see a few people in the comments saying 'its about this or that, but I don't think anyone else can tell you what this song is about except for Alanis herself..... so here are her words from an interview: "I felt that I lived in a culture that told me that I had to consistently and constantly look outside myself to feel this elusive bliss. And I achieved a lot of what society had told me to achieve and I still didn't feel peaceful. I started questioning everything, and I realized that actually everything was an illusion and it was scary for me because everything I had believed in was dissolving in front of me and there was a death of sorts, a really beautiful one ultimately, but at first a very scary one, and so I stopped. I stopped for the first time and I was overcome with a huge sense of compassion for myself first, and then naturally that translated into my feeling and compassion for everyone around me and a huge amount of gratitude that I had never felt before to this extent. And that's why I had to write this song, 'Thank U,' because I had to express how exciting this was and how scary it was and all of these opportunities for us to define who we are." Disillusionment, frailty and silence are among the things and feelings Morissette thanks in this song, but at the top of her list is India, where she spent time in 1997. The trip was enlightening and gave her some of the ideas for this song. Ultimately, Alanis Morissette spent well over a year touring and promoting her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill, which burned her out physically and emotionally. For the next year and a half, she took a lot of time off to decompress and re-evaluate. "Thank U" is her reaction to the conflicted feelings she had after achieving success.
I saw her in concert not long ago. When she walked out on a non-decorated stage in some oversized t-shirt and sweats. I was like, wth did she just wake up from a nap on the couch? The moment she began to sing, all of it disappeared. Her voice was so beautiful. She was one of those artists that you can tell did not need a lot of editing for her album. She was simply amazing.
I love this song. It is about waking up spiritually to the things that we do to harm ourselves and to the awareness that others have struggled that we cannot understand. Pain is our teacher
Alanis has one of the most piercing vocals I've ever heard. Her inflection & tone, along with the ability to hold those notes is fantastic. Add her striking physical beauty & she's a force
When Alantis came out with her first album of this genre "Jagged Little Pill back in 1995. She went from obscurity to fame almost overnight and it was a lot for her personally. She's a very reserved personality who uses her music to express herself. She writes basically all of her songs with producers, but after her jagged little pill almost 2 years touring straight with very little brakes it drained everything from her. She became depressed at her career hight as she couldn't do anything everywhere she went she was recognized globally and it was just a lot mentally for her. And so when they tour stop, she went to India by herself and it was the first time she could walk around everywhere and nobody knew who she was. She could just be Alanis and she found that it slowly brought her back to life and helped her start to confront her demons. And that's where India comes in. So she's thinking all the events that are happening in her life and how the were making her better and the nudity is her giving a visual representation of rebirth, being vulnerability and her shedding and starting again like a new born baby. So a lot of symbolism in the song, so yes, you're correct. She's thanking all these painful things in her journey she's done and experienced and saying though they're painful. Thank you to the universe. For giving me the experience to make me a better person.
She had a Platinum album as a Dance Music artist while a younger teenager, her record company demanded she give them more of the same, she quietly rebelled, released a second album less dansy styled with a hint of her Jagged Little Pill style, so her Label axed her. Remember she sang You Outta Know. She went to India, and became changed forever. She has said that trip saved her She learned to be thankful for the trials in life and learn from them. You should go deep into her catalog, you will not be disappointed. Congrats papa.
this was one of the most profound music videos that I've ever seen, one where I absolutely got the message the first time I saw it. Her album Jagged Little Pill shot her up in popularity. It was overwhelming for her and she took a trip to India and ended up becoming a Buddhist. The images of being naked is her coming back to her true self. She started seeing the illusion of the material world and found peace within. Fame can become overwhelming when you are more of a down to earth person.
I love the messaging in this song. I'm amazed at how aware of very complex deep emotions Alanis writes about, especially at such a young age. The self awareness she exhibits in the writing in this song is impressive.
There is a really small percentage of the world that loves positivity, the rest smoulder and complain. Never really bought into negativity, it's a spiritual thing not a physical thing.
I have LOVED her since the first time I heard her back in the 90s. She's an incredibly talented person. I saw her live in a small venue once. It was a really great show.
I'm telling you bro, watch her on the howard stern show singing "you outta know". I know you already heard the jam, but she sings it acoustic, and her talent is just so damn spicey at the same time.
Omgosh you cracked me up with the "no wonder she's on antibiotics" i love your heart and sense of humor. Thanks for all the laughter n tears we have shared. Even unbeknownst to you. Thank You!
Alanis is a very well rounded, self aware, and deep person. Being a dad, you should check out ‘ablaze’……it’s not one of her most popular songs…..it’s a bit more recent, but it’s a great song. 🤙🏻
Alanis spent well over a year touring and promoting her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill, which burned her out physically and emotionally. For the next year and a half, she took a lot of time off to decompress and re-evaluate. "Thank U" is her reaction to the conflicted feelings she had after achieving success. Disillusionment, frailty and silence are among the things and feelings she thanks in this song, but at the top of her list is India, where she spent time in 1997. I appreciated your commentary on this word and your appreciation for her lyrics. Is the first time I thought about her lyrics deeply in many many years.
Take time with those girls of yours every min every second you get. I’m here to tell you one day very soon they will be grown and no longer at home and you’ll be left thinking where did everybody go. I raised seven kids and my baby just turned 24. A couple of years ago she moved to south Korea I was like oh my God they are on there own now and raised and not here. She’s back in town now but that was the longest year of my life not laying eyes on here when she was out of the country and my oldest son I haven’t seen in about eight years. It eats at my heart but he’s in a different state with a family of his own working and doing life. I miss all my baby’s so much. Enjoy it all the crying the diapers the fighting that your girls will have one day but love every second because it’s only for a little while. Life moves on.
Love this song and this artist, so glad you checked it out. You really need to hear Ablaze! It's a song she wrote to her kids, and being the proud papa you are, I know you will love it!
Her first album was so full of anger. The second album, where this comes from, is about learning to let go of that anger and appreciate being alive. “How bout how good it finally feels to finally forgive you” links the two periods of her life, and her music, to me. (Actually, I’m disregarding her earliest stage of her music career. She released a teenage bubblegum-pop album in Canada that wasn’t very successful before she became famous with Jagged Little Pill. We don’t talk about that)
Unfortunately I think that after she lost the angst, and after the novelty of her second album, her career fizzled out. Rock music relies on anger and passion, and spiritual awakening doesn’t translate well to pop music. Those first two albums are an incredible journey, though. They really exemplify a spiritual journey of a human being.
I've noticed on other reaction channels that many people have the same response to this video and song. Always sounds something like this. " Wow I'm sure that this song had some seriously deep meaning that I missed. She obviously cares about everything in video. She's even thanking terror and I don't know what that's about but hey it obviously means something to her"
Another female you need to check out is CAROL KING. She started as a song writer in the 50's and 60's... Wrote some of the most famous and well loved songs. By the 1970's , she got up the courage to put out an album of herself singing her own songs.. amazing! TAPESTRY..multi Grammy award winning album and career
I tear up every time at "how good it feels to finally forgive you." Nothing feels better than letter old hurt go, forgiveness is more for the forgiver than forgiven. And then "how bout unabashedly balling your eyes out" we, especially men at worst are taught its some great macho thing to never cry, and at best hold back and might allow a tear out now and then. But when you are at your lowest, nothing is better than the catharsiss of a good, hard, unapologetic, ugly cry. Getting out the rage and sadness is cleansing and a huge dopamine hit.
Alanis was only 20 years old when she became super famous overnight. It was overwhelming so after a couple of years of doing concerts and television appearances all over the world, she spent some time in India meditating. She has never been able to top her first album which was one of the best selling albums ever for a woman
Disillusionment, frailty and silence are among the things and feelings Morissette thanks in this song, but at the top of her list is India, where she spent time in 1997. The trip was enlightening and gave her some of the ideas for this song.
I like your take on this very deep song from Alanis, pretty insightful as it’s your first time listening to it . And as you say it’s the hardships we face and the darker emotions that go along with those times that can often define us .. Thank u Disillusionment.. that’s a biggy, how bout grieving it all one at a time ! Profound stuff .. nice review - liked it a lot ! Stop staring hahaha
I have been a huge fan of Alanis since she was a teen, here in Canada, and had a pop music career. She had a few hits, like Too Hot, and a video with a very young, pre-Friends, Matt LeBlanc, video called Walk Away. She is incredible. Actually even before that, I watched her on a Canadian tv show called You Can't Do That on Television.
My best frienda took me to see her in concert at the Pyrimid in Memphis Tennessee when I first opened. She is Awesome live! It was the Jagged Little Pill tour. She played every instrament on that stage! She sang my favorite song last, You Learn is my life story. I wish you would do a reaction to that song. You would like it. It has a good story to it. ❤
Saw her just before she broke in a club in Cincinnati. About 800 people and it was incredible 🤘🤘 Saw her years later in an arena and it was a lot less exciting...
Alanis had the best selling debut album for a female singer, the Album Jagged Little Pill has sold over 36 million copies worldwide, Alanis has won 7 Grammy awards and 14 Juno Awards, she has been nominated for 80 awards and has won 38 awards altogether,Alanis a phenomenal live artist I have seen her perform live on 6 different occasions, she is not only a stunning vocalist Alanis is a clever intelligent songwriter and music producer, great reaction thanks 🙏
Great reaction bro. I love Alanis, so much good music, such good lyrics, always meaningful and heartfelt. Unsympathetic Character is one of the greatest songs in terms of stretching out and wrapping lyrics around the end of phrases, and way more off the beaten track than the usual reactions 😁😉
I love the symbolism of standing there completely exposed yet invisible to most but thankful as the occasional person “sees” her and puts their hand on her shoulder or hugs her or kisses her on the forehead.
I love her more recent The Reasons I Drink, as well as You Learn, and All I Really Want from 1995. They really are beautiful examples of her writing. The live Uninvited is truly an experience.
not long ago you were talkinig about Fleetwood Mac Stevie Nicks is the main Female lead singer but the other female lead was Christine McVie she is on so many of their songs and had a beautiful voice. The song "Songbird" is Christine singing and playing piano solo and is hauntingly beautiful and hits even harder since she passed away last year. Try listening to it sometime
I think she realized that life gives you the lessons you need to heal and instead of being a victim she empowered herself ❤ but in order to do this you have to peel away the layers and get down to raw vulnerability …in hindsight she’s very grateful because it was all for healing 🙏🕊
This is probably my favorite Alanis song out of all her greats. So much about the accountability and self-awareness and yes, living in the moment. She had recently gone to India and many do for a spiritual mecca, as the Beatles did. It’s about becoming a healthy person as a goal. This whole album was in this theme. Yes, being naked is about being vulnerable, what the lyrics spoke to, being brave and vulnerable. Actually, That I Would Be Good, is even more poignant/powerful.
I studied abroad in India the year after this song came out. It was a life changing trip, and very formative to my life perspective. In this song, she nails the impact of India on a person who wants to see and learn.
P.S. - In the 90s they sent you to India with a prescription of antibiotics for when you inevitably got an infection from food or water hosting unfamiliar bacteria.
Dogma is a unique movie with Alanis, Natt Damon & Ben Afflec. I remember it well. The thing about God at the end was a surprise. A lot of truth in it mixed with nastiness.
Alanis wrote this after returning from a trip to India. She's expressing her gratitude for life's lessons. The nakedness symbolises her rawness and vulnerability by being open about these subjects.
what Shane said. lol

Definitely one of the best live performances ever
And the hidden track off of Jagged little pill...KILLER!!!
I still can’t get over how she was once engaged to Ryan Reynolds.

Thank you for this comment (no pun intended lol) It deserves a chef's kiss. Muah!
Just beautiful...thanks for letting us know!
Thank ya Keith
I love her music ... still love her tunes , great reality of feelings whatever ya may be thinking feeling or have seen...

Realizing that all things are , most likely, illusions was a great relief to me - never scary. Freeing, lighten-ing.
She took a trip to India, the most spiritual country in the world, and it changed her. She's thanking it for the awareness the trip brought her.
Her live performance of "Uninvited" is outstanding and one of the best live performances I've ever seen. Her voice is amazing.
Absolutely agree! 💯
Yes! I’m infatuated with her performance of Thank U on New Year’s 2024/25. Just crushing on her at 50.

One of the funniest things about Alanis was when they had her play God in Dogma.
I was going to say this! She was perfect, too.
Boop.
I was going to say that too.
I forgot all about that 😂😂😂
Dogma. Great movie. Really hard to find it. Thanks a lot, Weinstein
I love this song. It is about waking up spiritually to the things that we do to harm ourselves and to the awareness that others have struggled that we cannot understand. Pain is our teacher
Alanis is a natural beauty.

More Alanis!? Yes, please.
She is into the occult worshipping lucifer
For me personally it’s about Stripping everything that’s held you down and you are born again to healing.
What a voice. What a songwriter. She recently turned 50 and looks and sounds even more amazing.
This is what a happy content secure woman looks like
Is this proof that Unicorns DO exist?
Pfff
It looks different for everyone.
this was one of the most profound music videos that I've ever seen, one where I absolutely got the message the first time I saw it. The bit that gets me is when with all the chaos going on around her, every now and again, a couple of people come up to her and just touch her on the shoulder, as a reassurance... gets me every time. F**king genius.
This song is so humbling. She is spot on with lyrics!❤
I’m so glad you reacted to this. You understand it more than you realize. She’s an amazing writer.
She really is that beautiful
I always find the reactions to this video very illuminating - those who are focused on the naked aspect and those who focus on the lyrics.
This is a great song. Another deep song and one of my favourite Alanis songs is Uninvited
She is a Natural Beauty ❤
Gratitude, stripped down to my essence. Thank you India. She went there and reached self-realisation on that trip. You got it.
Could be nostalgia but the 90's just hit different...
Venurability, confidence, comfort within one’s self & soul.
That’s the essence.
Bravo Alanis.
Timeless
She is beautiful and super talented. Note: she played God in the movie “dogma” it’s a must see dark sort of comedy. Full of the best actors🤘❤️
I would love Black Pegasus to review Dogma. I think he would not only get it, he would really enjoy it.
She was in some episodes of Nip/Tuck as well.
The whole album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, is an hour of free therapy.
There is a really small percentage of the world that loves positivity, the rest smoulder and complain. Never really bought into negativity, it's a spiritual thing not a physical thing.
Her voice is angelic, so looking like an angel is fitting
I have LOVED her since the first time I heard her back in the 90s. She's an incredibly talented person. I saw her live in a small venue once. It was a really great show.

Live at the Grammys “ Uninvited “
I second the motion. In fact, I'm gonna go watch it myself right now. I'm not afraid to take good advice.
Most definitely! Such an amazingly beautiful song!
This!!! 💯💯
Yes, that's my very favorite performance of hers that I've seen & heard!

Yesssssss!!! ANYTHING from her is amazing ❤
alanis was my spirit animal as a teen in the 90’s
You're right.... Your tripping.
And she IS a natural beauty!🇨🇦
I was a huge fan in the 90s and 00s. And of course I was in love.
Thank U" is a song by Canadian-American recording artist. She wrote the song after she came back from a trip to India. A spiritual journey.
I tear up every time at "how good it feels to finally forgive you." Nothing feels better than letter old hurt go, forgiveness is more for the forgiver than forgiven. I have been a huge fan of Alanis since she was a teen, here in Canada, and had a pop music career. She had a few hits, like Too Hot, and a video with a very young, pre-Friends, Matt LeBlanc, video called Walk Away. She is incredible. Actually even before that, I watched her on a Canadian tv show called You Can't Do That on Television.
it was a personal spiritual awakening she had while visiting india
My best frienda took me to see her in concert at the Pyrimid in Memphis Tennessee when I first opened. She is Awesome live! It was the Jagged Little Pill tour. She played every instrament on that stage! She sang my favorite song last, You Learn is my life story. I wish you would do a reaction to that song. You would like it. It has a good story to it. ❤
She has always been a Poet on the edge of reality. The Reality that 'is not' the one we all wish to Believe.
Saw her just before she broke in a club in Cincinnati. About 800 people and it was incredible 🤘🤘
Saw her years later in an arena and it was a lot less exciting...
You HAVE to watch her parody of Fergies My Lumps, it's hilarious! She has a sense of humor for sure!
Great song!
Head over Feet is my favorite song of hers.
Uninvited live with an orchestra. It’s mesmerizing. ❤
I saw her in concert for the first time this year what a phonomonal performer she is ❤ So caring to her fans
I love the symbolism of standing there completely exposed yet invisible to most but thankful as the occasional person “sees” her and puts their hand on her shoulder or hugs her or kisses her on the forehead.
I LOVE watching this shit. Thank you bruv
😂😂 your face at the end. Love your reactions!! ML&R
I love her more recent The Reasons I Drink, as well as You Learn, and All I Really Want from 1995. They really are beautiful examples of her writing. The live Uninvited is truly an experience.
Back in the day many men in love with her.
She's a natural beauty and still is many years later.
not long ago you were talkinig about Fleetwood Mac Stevie Nicks is the main Female lead singer but the other female lead was Christine McVie she is on so many of their songs and had a beautiful voice. The song "Songbird" is Christine singing and playing piano solo and is hauntingly beautiful and hits even harder since she passed away last year. Try listening to it sometime
Been to India 6 times , it definitely impacts and you re-evaluate your take on life!
I never thought about the lyrics to most of her songs. I just enjoyed her voice.
Proud Canadian here, love her and her music
I think she realized that life gives you the lessons you need to heal and instead of being a victim she empowered herself ❤ but in order to do this you have to peel away the layers and get down to raw vulnerability …in hindsight she’s very grateful because it was all for healing 🙏🕊
Listening to this again and watching it brought me so many emotions to the surface. Forgot how raw and beautiful this song was.
I assume this has been mentioned before. She was God in Dogma. I loved it. As a late 90's girl I'm still chasing Alanis' hair.
Nakedness is art just like the lyrics.
One of my favorites.
She's just a natural beauty!!!
Awesome song! Now do "Uninvited" - LIVE 💚🤙🏼
Man, I love her.
You’re pretty much spot on
I studied abroad in India the year after this song came out.
I love alanid
I had it bad for Alanis when she first released, yes she is stunningly beautiful. And she can sing with emotion.
Definitely check out live performances from her❤
She's beyond angel. She played God in Dogma😂
Dogma is a unique movie with Alanis, Natt Damon & Ben Afflec. I remember it well. The thing about God at the end was a surprise. A lot of truth in it mixed with nastiness.
