The worst part about mindless shortform videos like reels/shorts/tiktoks is that you feel like you wasted all that time. you come out of the daze like an hour or two later like "wtf did I do, so much time wasted" and then you close the app out of embarrassment. I don't really get that feeling with youtube because there's legit stuff to learn, and you can keep it on like TV while doing something else, so I don't feel nearly as bad, and I can turn the screen off and listen to the video like a podcast or something.
I've gone so far as to modify the youtube app and add browser extensions to my browser to remove shorts because I KNOW I will eventually see a good short title and thumbnail and get sucked in for an hour doing absolutely nothing and learning nothing. I just can't do it anymore.
@@JessicaFEREMI’ve noticed on the app UA-cam will pull up the shorts immediately sometimes! I use brave almost exclusively and screencast for this reason. It creeps me out so much. YasmineCollects just something i don't remember bringing up, a really good UA-cam addon is the vorpias v3 userscript for tampermonkey and or violent monkey because it basically brings back the 2013 site.
I agree with you. I was an early technology adopter, or a nerd. Got my 1st computer in 1982, in 1990 my 1st modem, that was a 2400 bps one, in 1993 got access to a computer that was on Internet at the university. I have some nostalgia for the '70s, the 80s and the '90s, but it's because I was young. In retrospective things were quite harder than today. Computers were expensive, getting software and games wasn't easy, and if you needed to read a manual, you ha to go in a library and eventually photocopy the page you were intrested. But now the problem is that, there's a sort of devolution of technology, a TV set sold nowadays it's a smart TV but lack some useful things that were common on TV on the past even 10 years ago: i don't need a voice operated intenet connected TV: i need a TV with a lot of inputs and decent speakers, and while at it a led display with the current channel number. And not crashing while scanning for new channels.
Some really well placed rants, I loved them! As a teeny tiny youtuber, smaller than you - I know the pain. Building my channel from the grounds up with no previous experience, no misterbeasting or linustechtipsing here either. All made with love by hand using tech I hacked to get going, no AI here. I'm burned out from lack of progress and from constant overstimulation too, haven't released a video for more than a month, though I keep posting in my community section to give my viewers a clue about what's going on. Regarding not-really-smart-phones, it's a collective phantasm - a social construct that holds together only because people feel that if they don't stick to it, they'll be left out there and excluded. Sometimes I find myself yearning for the 2000s unenshittified web browsing experience. Few ads, some popup here and there that could be blocked with no problem, no captchas, no GDPR notices or cookie consent forms that plague the pages nowadays, and most importantly, no over-encroaching social media, pervasive surveillance and recommendation algorithms. Screen time was dependent on physical access to a machine you could use for it, just like people relied on landline phones being geographically tied as a norm even in the 2000s; you just compartmentalized your timespace. Home is here, work is there, shopping is somewhere else, and you were available for calling only during certain activities and in certain locations. Now? Carrying a phone is the norm, and with it comes an expectation of being able to call you anytime, anywhere, no matter what you are doing at the moment, sometimes disrupting your activities. The list of people able to call you has grown too, not just those you know and gave your number, but also any call center that gets your data, since giving your phone number is often mandatory to register at certain services.
18:13 There's a funny story about this. apparently facebook's server rooms were locked with an app/badge and the entire server infrastructure was down, nobody had access to facebook not even users, so to get in, they had to send an intern with an angle grinder to destroy the lock to get in. technology can never be a replacement to good ol keys.
I didn't get a smartphone until like 2014 and my attention span has been doing downhill gradually ever since. You're definitely on to something about having it available making it too easy to (over)use. Once my current smartphone bites the dust I think I might actually get a flip phone because I hate this feeling of getting so easily bored whenever I'm not scrolling.
i literally only use my phone for calls and whatsapp to talk with my family, and instagram as entertainment while i am sitting in the bathroom, that's it, when i go out i am with other people,i spend time with those people. 100% agreed with you on everything you said, especially the last part about AI
@@YasmineCollects @MrDirkles Basically, the indie web is a movement to De-corporate the internet. No Social Media. No algorithms. Just word of mouth and creativity. Thank you so much for sharing. Your videos have not only helped me, but I've also shown some of your past videos to my friend, who is an autistic woman. Your videos have been one thing that have helped her explore her interest in technology, which she never explored until adulthood. I am eager to show her this video, I'm sure she will relate to you on a lot of things, maybe things that I can't relate to as well as another woman would. I too have dealt with social media addiction, which has been toxic to me for a lot of the reasons you mentioned, ragebait, unrealistic depictions of society, etc. I've been successful at kicking the habit for 2 years, and I'm not sure if I have any particular advice for how someone else could do it. I've had to make several deliberate efforts to do so, and failed many times having to start over. I suppose i have learned things with each effort and found ways to cope with anxiety or boredom in other ways, but I'm not discounting the possibility that, like any other addiction, it could come back to me someday. Getting off social media has helped my social skills too, along with working the cash register in retail. On the other hand, UA-cam and wikipedia have truly enriched my life. I am happy that i can learn so much about the world and gain perspectives from cultures from all over the world. This is a gift that my parents did not have, and perhaps its why they are so stuck in their narrow view. That is why I still have a smartphone (and afterall, it's the only way I could have discovered your content). With that said, I sympathize with the pressures you feel as a creator. I am not a creator myself, but i have always wanted to be, but have noticed that many creators get in a toxic grind of having to appeal to popularity, and losing their genuine traits as a cost. I've always imagined that if i could be a creator, i would always do it from a desire to share myself with the world and be heard, but not with the intention of being as popular as possible. That way, I would stay genuine, and I hope that maybe if you maintain that mindset as a creator, it would be possible for youtube to not become a toxic thing for you, and instead be something you can continue to enjoy. Thank you again for sharing ❤
You are definitely not crazy Yasmine and I can totally relate to the message that you are trying to convey to us. I absolutely love your channel and the content that you provide. Keep on doing you no matter what. 🤗💕💕💕
I agree with you! Technology has become a problem. Especially in regard to mobile phones. Why do we need an app for everything! It's infuriating! You have to feel sorry for the elderly who, quite frankly are being marginalised and excluded.
I felt the same way as you, but I am autistic too. I went for a 2-3 month break from UA-cam in order to move on from life and the internet itself. I came back with a new video that worth my interesting to show, and I run the same problem for my smartphone addiction as well. I first got my smartphone in Christmas 2016, and when I first started posting on social media with friends and family, they sometimes told me to take it down without consent, and if I asked them (which I did), they told me no! So, when my ex-girlfriend left for college in 2017 (the year she graduated from high school), I begin to develop major signs of post-traumatic stress disorder (depression and suicide symptoms) over losing a girl in high school that I once had a crush on. So the high school I went to, (in case you already know the school to blame is City Honors School), had a terrible reputation of teachers bossing the students around like bullies, and causes teacher-student bullying at the property. When I graduated from high school in 2019, I begin having several ongoing situation with nightmares and flashbacks over high school, because that school was no good for students with autism and ADHD, repeating the same violent matter over and over again like a VCR about a teacher yelling constantly at the students they do not like, and torture them to the point where it's not safe for students to go back. When my psychiatrist told me that I officially had PTSD from the events in high school, and my minor childhood trauma from 2007, I began to realized that all that they're doing now is not acceptable. It is now my permanent record medically forever. I eventually replace my smartphone with a rotary phone, and my first computer in 7 years, but I am resorted to calling and not texting all the time like I used to. I am not very good at texting at all. I am now in a job searching, that escapes me from the internet for a while. I personally and emotionally agreed with what you've said about the ongoing situation with technology, ever since AI and that's how I fed up with modern technology, I was born in 2000 and love classic cartoons, TV shows, NES video games and movies from the 20th century, and still looks better than modern crap out there. Now that I had a concussion from my hockey game last week, I am trying my best to avoid certain situations what my doctors told me and everything that could bothered while I am recovery from my injury. I always avoid AI at all, because it's not interesting to see anymore, or nobody wanted to hear from them again. Long comment aside, it took me 7 or 8 years to figure it out where I am at now, but we all had to say this, you are not alone! Joseph
I’m 39 I miss the days of the computer in our house only used at home I didn’t have a phone with internet till 2009 . I get overstimulated alot I’m also on the spectrum
Don't worry, you're not acting like a boomer. I fully agree that the issue isn't the technology itself, but the way it's being used to maximize profits for corporations rather than utilizing it to actually improve the lives of everyday people. Basically the problem is capitalism. It's always capitalism... 😭
On the autistics stuff there's another channel I watch on here called Dave's garage and Dave as a retired Microsoft programmer who also has autism and wrote two books on it and they're pretty interesting
We are all standing in the face of technology, and soon that technology will have the ability to advance itself. It is scary and can't be stopped. all we can do is adapt. we are all in this together. You're not crazy
I'm a 3D artist, I hate modern technology and I struggle alot with depression. I also call my phone a "graft" since nowdays you can't live without one...
You're not crazy. I didn't know you were Autistic. I have Autism and possibly ADHD (still waiting to be tested for that) but the reason I found your channel as I am interested in older technology like VHS, old camcorders, TVs etc... and your personality. I have never used TikTok. I can't stand vertical video or shortform video for several reasons. Its vertical, besides phones, screens are not setup to be vertical so video shouldn't be either. They are very short videos. People use or the most random copyrighted music on their videos which is sometimes too loud. People often just copy trends so the videos are far less unique and much less interesting as a result. Saying that, as much as I dislike UA-cam shorts, I do find myself scrolling through them even if I don't really like them and have to get myself to stop scrolling so ended up quitting watching them for over a month. I 100% get what you said about smartphones. I have never had a smartphone nor do I feel the need to have one but everyone I know does. My current phone is a dumbphone modern-ish Nokia of some sort. I only started using it because the phone I was using, was 2G and used the larger Sim card which was pay as you go and my service provider shutting this service down and moved me to a contract with a new sim card. I had to have a phone that had at least 4G and could fit the smaller Sim and they wanted me to get an app so I could manage my payments etc... but thankfully I can access the app on my desktop PC as the phone can't use apps. All I want is a phone so I can send and receive calls and texts, nothing more, I don't want a multimedia device with a phone attached. It feels like due to most people having smartphones, certain aspects of society are being geared to use smartphones, like what you said about your apartment and having no kyes or key fobs and I hate that. What you said about being on the spectrum and texts is exactly how I feel. I sometimes don't reply straight away to people when I get texts or e-mails, comments etc... Its not that I don't want to, I just either don't have the time or need to take a break and I remember once asking a question on an online forum, then getting sick for over week, In that tine I couldn't and didn't want to be online or even near a computer. When I was well again, I was busy for a couple of days, then I had some free time. I went back on the forum and saw replies to my post and some comments from several users feeling upset and complaining that I hadn't replied after they went out of their way to try and help me. I had to leave a comment and say where I was. I often feel we rely too much on technology and many people couldn't survive well without it and many people would be lost without a connection to the internet. My grandparents always had a landline phone in their house since my grandfather was asked to get it for his job in the early 70s. A number of years ago, when my grandmother was alive, she was told she needed a new landline phone as all landline phones were being made to use the internet or their wouldn't work. She never had the internet in her house and never once used a computer either so it was a pain trying to get her a phone set up so that she could use it without having the internet connected to her house.
Find myself don't have don't have tik Tok. I don't want it but I noticed some people use it and I'm near them it to me feels like somebody who's tuning in an old radio from like a car where you go from station to station to station to station to station and you don't really know anything. To me I'd rather never hear tick tock again I know some people love it and use it but to me it's more trouble than it's worth. And obviously the addiction to it can be a big problem for many people. But I do watch and enjoy watching UA-cam videos they're my speed and interesting take care.
I was expecting social media addiction to be mentioned. But when you spoke of only being able to access your home with an app, that made me quite uncomfortable. We are buying into the cyberpunk dystopia we were warned about in the 80s and 90s. Please keep making yourself conscious of your scrolling habits. Be with your own thoughts. It's very hard at first, and the rewards are initially very subtle. But peace of mind is possible, and your being will grow in ways you never expected.
It’s also incredibly inaccurate. UA-cam will allow children to be exploited by their parents for views and money but I can’t use a word in a completely unrelated context.
If modern technology gets to be too much its time to take a vacation to green bank west Virginia. Green Bank is in the national radio quiet zone. There's NEVER been any internet there...and there never will be. There's a couple bed and breakfast places there. People that live there gather at the mom and pop convenient store to find out what's going on. That's as close as your gonna get to how life was technology wise from the 1980's on back into the past. So there is a place to escape from modern technology.
Im old enough to remember when autism didn't exist. However, the so called symptoms of it: finding it hard to understand what others are thinking or feeling. getting very anxious about social situations. finding it hard to make friends or preferring to be on your own. seeming blunt, rude or not interested in others without meaning to. finding it hard to say how you feel. Used to be called being an introvert. Some people were more introverted than others and it would most commonly be seen in children with no siblings but some or all of these characteristics can be found in everyone. Life events can also cause people to exhibitor lose these traits. What blaming autism for your personality does do is create learned helplessness on that person. You are totally normal and don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
Unbearably cringe "nuh uh ur just normal, learning things about ur neurotype doesnt help stop doing that!!!" appeals to 'normalcy'. For free one of the worst takes I have seen
Sorry, but the title of this video is misleading. You are not talking about technology, social media which has nothing to do with technology. Its just a platform to vent on technology. Social media is mainly just junk. UA-cam is the only social media i use. The rest of it is total junk. Instagram, tiktok, Snapchat, etc. all just total junk. But, anyway thats not my point. Its not technology. Technology is things like pc's, games consoles, mobile phones, etc. so. (and i know i am going to get roasted to death here, but that's perfectly fine by me, i enjoy getting roasted by people, just call me the Christmas turkey,) that is technology. Now, roast away.....
the internet used to be a place you escaped to. now it's a place you escape *from*
full ack… 😢

👏👏🙏🎄
I'm on Comcast rather than Spectrum.
But peace of mind is possible, and your being will grow in ways you never expected.
you arent crazy :)
You're not crazy.
You're not crazy. Also it particularly bothers me how people can't say certain words on a platform anymore. It feels like religion.
It’s also incredibly inaccurate. UA-cam will allow children to be exploited by their parents for views and money but I can’t use a word in a completely unrelated context.
Quite clearly, you're not crazy!
Your not crazy
Im old enough to remember when autism didn't exist. However, the so called symptoms of it:
finding it hard to understand what others are thinking or feeling.
getting very anxious about social situations.
finding it hard to make friends or preferring to be on your own.
seeming blunt, rude or not interested in others without meaning to.
finding it hard to say how you feel.
Wait a moment... you remember the world before Leo Kanner and Hans Asperger did their research in the 1940s? That would make you REALLY old!
You're not crazy.
