Wow. Time fly so fast! But I still try to spread the word about my easy way to knit! This is very very easy way. I do lots of hats and sock.for donations. happy 2019 ! Hope you will learn to knit fast. My speed 86 stitches in 1 minute, but the Gennies record is 119 stitches in 1 minute.. So lets keep up our speed!
My mother taught me how to knit and when I started trying to follow how-to-videos, I realized my style of knitting was very different from those shown in the videos. So happy to finally have a name for my style of knitting, which seems fast and easy to do! Thank you!
Oh my God!! I've finally found a name for the way I knit!! My mother tried to teach me European style but I couldn't figure it out. The same with Continental so I figured out a way on my own and this is it. Everyone looks at me fascinated when they see me knitting. Thank you for putting this video up and giving my technique a name I can tell people when they ask me. Cheers!!!
I've found some people call this Eastern European Knitting or Combination Knitting. It's how I first learned to knit a few months ago. So much easier and very much more ergonomic.
This is how the women in my family knit. To me this the only effective way to knit. Whenever I see other techniques I wonder why they try the harder way. Thanks for sharing.
Американская over here. I knit like this and everyone was always telling me that I did it wrong! I'm self taught. Thank you for sharing P.S. You spoke well and your English is far better than my Russian! отлично!!
Hi. I have an Amazon ebook. I put all explanations how to read knitting charts in any languages. You can read charts in Chinies..we have an international knitting language. Check it out. My a book Russian speed knitting on Amazon.
Hi , I want to thank you so much , I learned your method because I have severe arthritis in my left wrist. It seems this is a easier way for me to knit.
I also enjoy your accent and voice-and the attitude you have about knitting and helping others enjoy something you love. I desire to know many ways to hold my needles and yarn so that I can knit in various ways, and I love that you have shown another option!
My thought was wow she speaks English beautifully! I bet you can be sure not many English speaking people can speak any Russian let alone as well as you speak English I can only speak English like many. You need not apologize! Thank you for this video.
Your English and your knitting demonstration are excellent. You have no need to apologize or to be shy about speaking English or Knitting. I am from Russia myself, and I knit Continental, not Russian. I know this style of knitting from my childhood, I learned knitting on my mother's knee, I even don't remember being taught, and I'm older then the author of the video, which means I have been knitting for way more than 35 years, you can add 25. What I would like to say is, that as fast as this style of knitting is, it has its problems, as every other way of knitting. 1. Purl stitch is done in a way then turn the stitch, so it is more convenient to work knit stitch through the back. The resulting stitch will sit on the needle the usual way, with front edge leading. Everything is fine as long as you work plain stockinette. If you have purl-knit stitch combination, it may become confusing, and you'll have to pay a lot of attention, since your stitches will sit on the needle with different orientation. It may be very awkward to purl a stitch with was purl on the previous row, and some stitches you will have to knit through the front. 2. When stitches sit on the needle with different orientation it may be more difficult to move stitches along the needle, more drag at the place where cable connects with the needle itself. 3. Back in Russia, I have seen number of knitters who had difficulties with lace knitting because of the Russian way of knitting (for example, my MIL, till I taught her Western Continental purl stitch, then she switched entirely). Remember, Orenburg lace is done on garter stitch background, no purls. 4. After about 20 years of teaching knitting in the US to people with different backgrounds, I realised that there is no one BEST way of knitting. If your Granny taught you English knitting when you were 4 years old, it will be the best way for you always. The speed of knitting is more complex than just English, Continental, Russian or Portuguese technique. If you are not happy with the way you knit, try various techniques and see which one suits you best, this will be the speediest and most relaxing for you.
Thank you for your explanation you are so right about stitch orientation. I knit English style (I am a grandmother!) but I have been practising continental and find it much easier apart from the purl stitch!!
It’s true but once you know what you are doing and what needs to be done, it’s pretty simple. You just got to pay attention. I’m from Ukraine, and the “ speed knitting “ is how I learned to knit. Now.. I’m not a pro and I do watch a lot of tutorials but I gotta say. I can NOT watch an English tutorials, as it is way too confusing for me. And it’s simply because I knit like a Russian haha . But the tutorials that I have watched and attempted to do, well they turned out as they should. To each their own. Knitting is not easy and it takes a lot of patience.
@@kalkapolka I have heard it all, about 'you just have to pay attention'. I have never heard any intelligent explanation why not to knit normal continental, where all stitches are oriented in correct way, always. All attempts to explain to me huge, unbelievable advantages of what became known as 'Russian knitting' failed, because there is none. I accept only one explanation - one was taught this way by Grandma. But I don't see any good reason to teach adults this way, or promote it as superior. Because it is not superior. As for English way of knitting, I understand why it's confusing to you. English way of knitting is a victim of circular needles. Before invention of circular needles, it was very, I mean VERY efficient way to knit. But it's good only with rigid straight needles and with knitting belt. On circular needles it's ridiculous. Knitting is easy, there is no any particular magic about it. It's not a brain surgery.
I heard it too from old English type knitters :) . Life is short we need enjoy our life and knit fast to show up our new models. Who cares about the rules :) in the knitting books.
This is the way I've always knit, despite also being told I knit wrong. It is not the knit stitches that set the pattern, however--it is picking the purl (instead of looping the yarn over the needle) that turns the knit stitch so you can knit into the back of it. Issues occur when a pattern says to 'knit through the back loop', thereby twisting the stitch--we must turn the stitch so knitting through the back loop makes the twist. There are also issues with K2tog's and ssk's. These issues do not stop me from knitting and purling the fastest way for me--I just learned to adapt what I do so my knitting comes out the way I want it to look.
This is the way people here in Finland knit too, so Eastern sure sounds accurate. And pretty much everyone has done some knitting at school, too. At some point I was surprised when I realised people in the States & Britain have some to me at the time weird way of moving the yarn... Now I use those methods sometimes if they work better for a particular Stitch pattern.
Hanna Risteli Yes, I made a mistake to call my ebook Russian speed knitting. I should to call it European knitting. I can't to change it. I did copyright for my book. Ehh. But it is good way to knit anyway.
This is how I just happened to teach myself. Glad I know the term for it now. When I was teaching myself. My aunt who is left handed told me to hold the yarn in my left hand not my right and I ended up doing exactly how you showed on your video. I am so fast at knitting. I love it. If I nevered learned this form of knitting I would have given up and just stayed with crocheting instead.
I’m from the US and learned this way on UA-cam. I had no idea it was the Russian way of knitting until today. I totally agree it is faster!! Your English is perfect!!
This is a good video and I'm so glad you made it! I have an elderly student who knits this way also and I told her it's okay because the result is the same. Now I can tell her that it's the Russian way, and please do not change!
Thank you for this video. I have been trying to learn how to knit faster and the only way is by not throwing your yarn but knit continental style. I see that your stitches lean differently than continental style, but it works the very same when you knit the back loop. Very interesting.
+sannyhawaii This is a wonderful technique but people should know that you can't swith to English or to continental from this because your stitches lean the opposite direction. This is a 'twisted' stitch in Eng/Cont. So, you can't do a few rows this way & then go to one of the others on the same piece. The loops will be very tight for inserting your needle. I would like to see how you purl. Your English is better than some Americans! Your accent is charming ;-)
Tatyana, I am very happy to see your video. Years ago, I was studying in Mexico and I learned to knit while I was there. When I came back to the USA I found out that no one knitted the same way that I do. English, Continental, German . . . it was all different and I had a hard time using patterns. You know, when a pattern says "knit through the back loop" and I would think that I always knit that way. Now I know that I am knitting Russian style. I do wish that I could read Russian so that I could follow Russian patterns. Thank you for your video! I hope more people will learn this style and it will become popular. Then I won't be so lonely in the knitting circle. :-) --Anne
I have a ebook at Amazon. I put there all sign how to read charts. You can find charts at the Pinterest. You even can read Japaneses and Chinese charts book without knowing their languages.
I taught myself how to know back in 2003. I tried to follow the books that were a Western style of knitting. It boggled my mind on how time consuming it was and problematic when moving stitches left to right. So I took some time and came up with what I thought was better not knowing this Russian/Eastern style already existed. I love this style. It's so fast and easy for me, I am often find knowing while not looking at it and it's PERFECT! Thank you for putting a video up.
My mother was Cuban and she taught me back loop knitting...here in US they use front of loop. I have been crocheting for many years and now want to learn knitting and front loop knitting feels awkward..but since everyone does it thought I was knitting wrong...nice to see I wasn't doing it wrong at all! Going back to back stitch. Th a n k s Also been looking for someone to show Russian top down sweater in English..so many beautiful patterns on line, but all in Russian.
I've watched a few knitting videos, and it amazes me that the little bit of knitting that I've done and learned all seem to be based on old methods from other countries. Thanks for a good video! And good job on your English! I had absolutely no problem understanding you.
This is the way I knit, I thought it was lazy of me to knit like this but felt more comfortable this way. So it's Russian that's cool it's a style of knitting. Thank you for the video.
This is how I knit! My grandmother taught me this way. She was from near Lviv, Ukraine, so they must knit Russian style there. It is very fast and easy to knit and purl for lace patterns.
the more impotent is remember-knit like you want, but you have to open the stitch like a little "window" and bring the yarn! Do not make cross over stitch. Cross over stitch will be tight and uncomfortable to knit. Open the window and bring the stitch with your needle.
Thanks, this is the way Mom taught me how to knit, I've never seen anyone knit like this other than her. She may have learned from her grandmother who came from Lithuania, it was probably easier for her to knit with severe arthritis. Later I switched to Continental, knitting through the front loop, when I knit a Shetland lace sweater because it made reading lace patterns easier.
+Janet McDowell I don't know about it, I think it does not matter which stitch do you make when you read your charts. I switch to Continental stitches when I knit on the 5 needles . Socks and hats. But anything good when it is helping you:)
+sannyhawaii I've always knitted this way. My mother taught me, and I was born in Venezuela. I am curious though why do you change to Continental when knitting socks and hats? Thank you.
+Arlette Garcia I knit V-stitch. I am opening the "window" and knit! ( but secret is in a purl stitch!. When you knit in a round you make the knit stitch from the Russian purl stitch. now your V stitch upfront of the working needle. :) so you need to knit it as Continental .
Thank you so much, I have been knitting this way since I started knitting. I taught myself to knit because I live in southern Alabama, and no one I knew knitted.(It's too hot here most of the year!) I just did it my way because it seemed so much easier! It seems I was knitting Russian style all along! Thanks for letting me know that my way of knitting wasn't wrong.
Out of all the videos I watched, this is the easiest to understand! It definitely helps my knitting speed so I can make scarves in 3 days, instead of 3 weeks! =) Thank you so much!
Hello Tatyana (I hope I spelled your name right). I mean this in a friendly way, there is no need to apologize about your accent. The fact that you can speak more than one language makes you very special. 😊 Thank you for sharing your technique!
That is great! Welcome to the knitters world. Do you know how to read Japanese charts, looks like this( + 000 xxx 000 --xxx +) ? I have wrote an ebook Russsian Speed Knitting at Amazon. I explained most of their charts.
I think your English is fine! As an American, I can't imagine teaching a tutorial in Russian! Lol! Thanks for sharing this with us - I'm going to try it!
Thank you! I've watched a friend knit this way for a long time, but I was never able to follow her directions to do it. You made it so much easier. Thank you so much!
+Anne Swan thank you. I am so happy to help you and more people. check my amazon ebook too www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GK73GBW?*Version*=1&*entries*=0
Thank you very much! I have my e-book at Amazon. Russian speed knitting. You will find there all signs of the Europian and Japanese knitting charts! You will be able to read any charts on any languages! It is an international knitting sings!
This is the way how I knit, it is faster. I learned to knit from Russian knitting books. Also, everyone whom I know who knits, from whom I learned to knit too, they knitted this way. For me, other ways are much much slower.
you should never apologize for your English/accent. at least you can communicate in more than one language. I personally love hearing different accents when people speak English.
Thank you for taking the time to teach English speakers Russian knitting. We understood you perfectly.
It's really interesting to see different knitting styles. Your English is just fine; no need to apologize!
+zenderlee thank you very much

Thanks for the video, I’m always looking for ways to improve my speed.
I know the Guinness record is 119 stitches . she made it in picking Continental knitting style.
Thank you very much. I am not professional video maker but I tried.

I've found some people call this Eastern European Knitting or Combination Knitting. It's how I first learned to knit a few months ago. So much easier and very much more ergonomic.
Same here! ALL THE YAY!!!!!! (Though I kind of throw the yarn rather than pick it up smoothly like she does.)

Good tutorial ,takes you step by step and is also very fast.
I have been knitting like this for ever. I thought I had been doing this wrong the whole time. I’m so happy to have seen your video
Your English is great ,don't put yourself down ,I could never learn your language. Best wishes
Thank you very much.
Do you know- your voice and accent are a pleasure to listen to! :)
+Donna Morrow :) Thank you very much. :) I want people know that any knitting styles are good, but this one is easier .
I also enjoy your accent and voice-and the attitude you have about knitting and helping others enjoy something you love. I desire to know many ways to hold my needles and yarn so that I can knit in various ways, and I love that you have shown another option!

Большое Вам спасибо за ваш урок! Я научила мою сотрудницу вязать по нашему и ей очень нравится этот способ!
спасибо. Вам. Мы должны показать американцам, как вязать наш простой бабушкин способ. :)
sannyhawaii I have noticed that Mexican women do it this way also and they knit very well and very quickly. It is a good way.

I am glad to share my style. So easy and fast. Just take some practice. :)
Good idea. Could you show how to Knut purl quickly as well.
Please .check my other videos. I have it all.
This is how I knit! My grandmother taught me this way. She was from near Lviv, Ukraine, so they must knit Russian style there. It is very fast and easy to knit and purl for lace patterns.
Love your accent! You spoke English just fine, easy to understand. I haven't seen purl the last stitch in many years.
the more impotent is remember-knit like you want, but you have to open the stitch like a little "window" and bring the yarn! Do not make cross over stitch. Cross over stitch will be tight and uncomfortable to knit. Open the window and bring the stitch with your needle.
Always find the right leg of the stitch! V - left "\" , and " / " -right!
I think you did a nice job and your English was fine-I had no trouble understanding you at all. Thank you for the video.
Do not apologise for your English. It is actually very good. Best Wishes from Scotland.
Thank you very much. I was practicing.
:) so you need to knit it as Continental .
thank you for the lesson.... your accent is refreshing.... God bless.

This is the way how I knit, it is faster. I learned to knit from Russian knitting books. Also, everyone whom I know who knits, from whom I learned to knit too, they knitted this way. For me, other ways are much much slower.
