  • Am I the one feeling it? Even as a reviewer myself, I think there's some misalignments between brands, content creators and viewers. Brands expect targeted reach, content creators wants views and subscribers, viewers want the latest information and opinions about new gear... however, none of them makes sense anymore, not with the timing in between all three. This is why I think UA-cam reviews are not what they used to be.

    💯 % with you. Family and paid work must come first. I am sure everyone on this channel agrees, and appreciates what you do, and have done on UA-cam. I for one, getting back into photography after having seen my children grow into young adulthood, enjoy this channel. Please do as you say and invest the time in your family. We will still be here when a new vid comes out, whenever you do get that spare time. Bless you!

I won't stop producing videos and reviews and I hope to make it more fun though, while adapting with my work in between. Still figuring out things in the mean time but it's been a fun journey, thanks to all of you!

    You were a HUGE influencer in my transition to MFT over the last year. Due to GAS, I've bought a ton of used bodies and lenses. There's not much more that I need. So your transition away from gear review fits my timeline. 😊

    I loved all the early videos you made with Tracy and the models like Charlie, they were so totally different to what others were doing and really convinced me to buy into m43. I suspect they were tremendously resource intensive to make! Now there is so little micro four thirds kit coming out that would interest me that there is nothing for you to review anyway!! Seriously though yep family first, yep making money second then do this if you have fun doing it, or it keeps bringing you additional clients or workshop attendees!!!

    It's no accident that camera manufacturers give influencers only hours/day to use a camera for their "first look" reviews before shipping the camera to consumers. This provides the manufacturer all the marketing exposure they want but without the scrutiny associated with a proper review. Scrutiny that can only be done when using a camera for more than a few hours.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  Місяць тому +3

      Indeed, it's all marketing. Yet everyone and every brand on planet earth is doing it. Whether it's camera, lens, pencil or cleaner, it's crazy. Everyone wants to be on UA-cam and everyone would say yes when a brand approach them. I've said no to many already as I don't see it's related or interestingly enough to justify my time.

    • @testcams
      @testcams Місяць тому +1

      @@Red35Photography Agreed. That state of affairs is bizarre. Manufacturers are essentially recruiting the population to market to each other. It's almost like something out of a movie.

    My brother across the pond. I completely understand. Family is first especially with young children. I lost my father earlier this year and the importance of family was reinforced in my mind. My photography had to take a step back, or a couple steps back. My mom has health issues and needs me more than my camera. So life changes. You don't want to wake up years down the road and think, I wish I had spent more time with my family. My daughter is on her own getting ready to graduate for college, trust me the time passes so fast. Spend time now, because you cannot get it back.

      Watched a review this morning on the Olympus 150 - 400 mm f4 lens it was the micro 4/3 girl I think they’ve let her have it for a fortnight. There are many faults with this lens I know I’ve owned one for three months. It has good points. It seems she was frightened to say anything negative about it because she wants to become an Olympus ambassador. Subsequently I’ve unsubscribe. It’s obviously a very expensive and it seems as though she was enticing people to buy without mentioning what’s wrong with it to me that’s wrong.

In rest, you can post shorts video about what you do, what you enjoy, what amazing things you see. Post more shorts ! Like : I am admiring this nice sunrise today (a 15 seconds short video). I checked you "SHORTS" video section. You don't have that much videos there. You are underestimating the potential of the SHORTS. Post more videos there and less video in the standard section !

    I love to watch all these different reviews and actually I do not expect a deep personal testing feedback right after the product launch. It‘s absolutely fine to have some first information about the new features, the intended concept and hear opinions for best use cases of the new product. Richard Wong, the hybrid shooter and some other crazy in depth tech reviewers come next and I cannot really understand how they do this. They’re just great. But I appreciate the most those „story telling“ reviews, like yours, that might come later but add some real world personal use experience and share other interesting things as well. To me they’re much better than 10 videos at launch day from giggling UA-camrs in Japan. This is also fun but I see the huge marketing aspect which is not wrong per se but makes a big difference.

    Camera review channels wont really say anything negative for fear of getting blocked by the camera company. So they just tow the line and if they say anything negative its usually pretty minor. I like camera conspiracies because he is basically ignored/banned by most companies sohe is free to say what he really thinks. Its something you will never see reviewers do.

    I have come think that almost all cameras and lenses are actually good. For general usage they all work. You might find some cameras have better this and that feature but still in general they work. This is why reviewers need time to test the product. To find areas they excel and areas they fail, possibly.

    You are one of just a handful of UA-cam photography content creators I feel is talking to me as a person, and not just trying to hustle me. Please "pay yourself first" to keep your work and life in balance such that you will still be able to do what videos work for you. Quality over quantity, Jimmy!
    I totally agree that most photo gear reviews have become too quick and much too superficial to even be worth watching. I do get that manufactures would want to keep the time short between early access by reviewers and the product announcement so they can get the most buzz by "bursting" onto the scene. However, those reviewers need to clearly state that their "review" is just first impressions. I can count many great cameras and lenses that got poor initial reviews, but later were praised by those who spent the time like you do to really use and understand how that thing works. Let's face it - people have been designing and using photography gear for about 185 years, so many basic design and ergonomic principles have been sorted. Usually, progress is more like cutting the facets of a diamond where each cut takes times to make and time to appreciate.

    The problem with you tube is while many cannels are entertaining, very few are honest in what they put out, their is a lot of personal bias and every one seems to have a channel. Some people know what they are talking about and others not so much but when I was in school we had good teachers and poor teachers. Today because many of the magazines that i read from the time i picked up my first digital camera are no longer in print, and the shame is many of the contributors too these publications were quite knowledgeable this is sometimes lacking on UA-cam. I enjoy your channel as you are a knowledgeable photographer and you're information is not wrapped up in personal bias. Many people Today use UA-cam to learn about different topics such as photography but unfortunately it's hard for someone that doesn't have a long background to tell facts from fiction so keep up the good work Jimmy, your channel is one of the better ones 👍.

    It is a deliberate ploy of the manufacturers to limit the time that you have to test, create and publish your YT reviews. That way, you can only give it a very cursory review, hence little opportunity to deep dive and discover the limitations of the product. Most reviews on YT these days are simply reading off the spec sheets provided and some even use the launch videos to support their content. I have stopped watching many of these reviews now because it is simply a waste of my time.

  • @sabatiniontech7256
    @sabatiniontech7256 Місяць тому

    Jared/Froknowsphoto has dealt with this, if he does not get the gear a month in advance of launch he does a very cheap to produce preview. Just a locked off head shot, reading the specs from notes, insert some closeups into the stream and publish the hopefully single take. No fuss no muss no bother. Once he has the camera/lens for a month he then publishes a real review and deletes the preview. Twice as much content for little more work and you are timely for the launch.

    I don't know when I watched a review last time, I simply don't care about it anymore since it's become so hyped, standardized, and they always are published at once, flooding UA-cam with the same videos essentially.
    Or, I watch old reviews or long term reviews. I feel that reviews were more informative in a constructive way back in the day. I'm also more concerned with how gear performs over a long period, rather than - as you say - are just a declaration of specs and description of design. All gear works well on the first day.

    Comments: Spend $200 more and get a 6700. Lol.
    First time I'm seeing influencers in this niche getting dunked on in the comments. I think it's bc like you said it's pump and dump vids. Also I think normy consumers, like myself, non professionals are getting smarter on the topic. Like for beginners 8 bit vs 10 bit ...95% we won't even notice. However, Ibis and internal ND filter we will. Now professionals who color grade will notice both.

    Disappointing...while there's an overabundance of poorly made on UA-cam, yours stand out and I have come to rely on them. I don't have GAS, in fact, I am a cautious and reluctant buyer and will only go for gear that I envision using routinely. That's why I have only two lenses for my OM-1 and why I watch many reviews before making any purchase. I think there's still a place for high quality reviews, but if the business model doesn't work any more, so be it.

    In my view, reviews tend to focus too much on the advertised technical specifications instead of showing what a photographer can accomplish with the specific feature. It's nice to know if a lens is sharp. It's more important for me to see what you can do with it. For example, a super wide lens, what are it's limits? How does it look shooting architecture at low angles? How can you get the least distortion? With telezooms, show examples of images photographed from a distance. Same thing with camera features, what will the ND feature do for you? Show examples. With MFT vs. Full Frame, discussion should also include how the cons of MFT are Pros in other areas, such as extended DOF. These are the things I would like to see more reviews of and that could benefit manufacturers more that just saying it's sharp and well built.

    Tbf I for 1 like watching the early overviews/reviews. And we can watch more later on. I don’t buy stuff during launch anyways.

    I think that we are all to much linked to social medias where everything is free. That´s something very difficult to change. When someone ask for money, the situation changes, only a very small percentage will pay. And I also think that many companies are suffering the leaving of their ambassadors, who want to run a much more free way by their own. Who will win the battle? Everybody will loose, specially the customers.

    I feel the backlash on the Panasonic S9 Launch has been more over hyped than the Camera itself,.
    I think the tone of the criticism you see of yt reviewers reeks of a naive and angry envy and you should filter it out, I have been following tech reviews on everything from fishing tackle to HiFi since 25 years before UA-cam, mostly in print. Glossy specialist interest Magazines, were and still are, advertising conduits with Articles in about the things they advertise, ever was it thus, with YT that dependancy is actually less strong than it ever was when Penatax say would have an inside spread advert in the issue that had the MX review in. We were of course more sophisticated back then, less snowflakey with our asses formly in the real world of commercial reality.

    Reviews are a superficial, unimaginative messy use of time. Manufacturers would do better to do what Toyota did with their new Land Cruiser and UA-camr Eva zu Beck. It’s fun. It’s professional. It’s timely. And, more importantly, it not only promotes sales, it properly compensates all involved. I’m not a fan of what’s basically volunteer slave labor for large corporations.
    YMMV

    I don't understand your video title. What do you mean "reviews are over"? You will never make a review again? I doubt that. Please don't put erroneous titles, it is annoying.
    You are running your own channel, when you post a review is your business. If you only have a day, then say so in the review. That is all. The viewer has to use their brain!
    I like your reviews of lenses, like recently the Pergear 25mm F1.7. I waited for that, as I wanted to hear what you thought.
    For Japan and the S9, I have no idea what the fuss was about.

      Thanks Michael. I am more highlighting what I think about UA-cam reviews in general and also how I feel about my own reviews. I am running my channel, but it's not my business yet. It's just a part time hobby for me. If I am to run a business, I may be forced to do what most other UA-camrs do, clickbait, big thumbnail, work with brands (and promote them) then get sponsorships, to drive growth and numbers in Google analytics. It works for most. Yet, perhaps I am not really a UA-camr (yet) and a photographer, and I approach things differently. In my reviews, I use them in my jobs or when I actually want to go out and shoot. I don't force myself to photograph something meaningless or pointless. Every time I press my shutter, I want my shot to have some value at least. Thanks for liking my Pergear video!

    Facts! I refuse to review something I’ll be borrowed for a few days. I abuse everything I review. I’ve taken up to 6 months to review a product.
    I had a brand wanting to still ship me something, and the review had to go live in 9 days. They hadn’t even got my mailing address yet 😅 I was like yeah you not getting a review in 9 days 😂
    The brands opinion isn’t my concern. It’s my viewers.
    Appreciate it man, people have NO idea what it’s like to review a product.

    All your speech is based on "complaints and complaints"... 80% of your audience is because Reviews, How can you give it up? ...What are going to see now, your life, your long hair, your sports cars?... all the content you make orbits around Reviews, the Reviews are the CORE of your channel....
    You talk a lot about the timing, the effort, the hate... blah blah... well take 3 months but don't stop doing Reviews... stop buy equipment, reinvest ... keep increasing the GREAT LEVEL YOU ALREADY HAVE... hate is relative to the RESPECT you already have!!!! ...take a picture of yourself with a Dom Pérignon 1983, with a Macallan 12 years Whisky, with a beautiful blonde and throw against the haters... if you need more money... reengineer your business... but really don't give up Reviews, if you do that probably your channel will drop down!! ...and those complaints will be bigger...
    I'll give you an idea... open an OnlyFaa.., FAN... SLY and show how you work... I would pay up to $20 a monthly to watch a pro of your level work... with a pair of Lumix G7, GoPro, cables, with a used BlackMagic ATEM MINI... done!!!! ...are you having a 40's crisis? maybe? ...
    Sorry if I sound bad or rude... but I am very surprised and not happy of ONE of the few honest UA-camrs give up!!

    A lot of reviews are just corny. And most people follow all the same UA-cam reviewers. Anytime something is launched I get notifications from Jared Polin, Gerald Undone, etc. and honestly they end up bickering about each other and saying different opinions instead of facts about the item and it gets confusing. Jimmy, I've got to say, I love your reviews. I've used gear after reviews you've done and all the information held up. To be honest, we need more educational videos about the gear and learn ways to use it.
