In 2010 while staying in Paris for a 2 month sabbatical, I boarded a train from Gare Saint Lazare station directly to Cherbourg. It was on a Saturday morning. I remember seeing the German WW2 bunkers overlooking the harbor. The scene impressed me greatly. I walked past a tourist information center and was greeted by a pleasant woman who spoke enough English to give me perfect directions to the town center. Once there, I explored a bit and stumbled upon a food market behind a school where I lunched on roasted French sausages, peppers on a crusty baguette. Later, I decided to train back to Paris and had steak frittes in a restaurant on rue saint Jacob near 5th floor walk up I had rented for a month. 14 years later and after many return trips to France, I remember my excursion to Cherbourg with fondness.
