Creating An Artificial Reef From Recycled Concrete
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 сер 2013
- This brief video story explains the process of building a reef ecosystem foundation using only recycled materials that may have otherwise ended up in a landfill. The reef project featured was placed offshore Jacksonville Florida in August of 2013 in 73 feet of water.
Watch how material was acquired and logistically handled, how the artificial reef site was selected, and see underwater video of the reef immediately captured after the placement.
A big thanks to Larry Davis who shot most of the video clips featured in this piece. Joe Kistel and Ed Kalakauskis are the narrators featured in the story.

Kudos to you guys!!!
love it.. good job guys.
Amazing!!!!
awesome
+ThinkItSinkItReefIt One quick question... You guys took recycled construction concrete... Doesn't the concrete used to build artificial reefs have to be a special type of concrete to attract sea life on to it??.. By this I mean: PH NEUTRAL CONCRETE ???... Thank you for your reply in advance....
communistjesus I’m no industrial chemist, however I’m pretty sure that all concrete would be somewhat alkaline due to the high presence of lime in the mix. Given that seawater is acidic and the concrete is alkaline the two will have some canceling effects on each other.
type 1 concrete is the best kind, and I'm sure they checked to see what kind of concrete it was before throwing it out there.

how can I get more involved ?
2:27 whoa slow down! Way too many technical terms I need a simpler explanation of the process please.
It's dumping garbage, not making artificial reef
It's both. an artificial reef is helpful for a lot of the marine ecosystem. by building this, you've given marine life a place to live, you stop ships from entering a place that needs protection, you slow/stop erosion of the land, block the use of trawling nets - which is killing the marine ecosystem. this can also help promote tourism and help with surfing. they used concrete because its pretty safe for the environment because it wont break down like plastic. and they used THIS concrete to recycle instead of needing to make more which is harmful. it is recycling concrete to help the environment.

@@kalinaanderson2779 plastic doesn’t “break down” it only breaks up.
