      I am a woodworker with a small shop up a holler in Avery County North Carolina. Discovering Otis has given me so much amazing things to listen to. I have gone from podcast... I've listened to every single one of the "thanks for giving a damn" episodes to books on Audible like A Deeper Blue and The Legend of the Road Mangler. Plus the music. I've discovered so many awesome artists due to this channel. Keep up the good work.

    Hey Otis. Rune here. I remember that day, and how conflicted you were about that podcast. We had talked a lot at that point, and I knew you had the stories, and I knew you had the voice, and I knew you could perform, and I was sure you would absolutely do a great job. One of your biggest worries were the longevity of it. You were adamant that if you started, you were in it for the long haul. It's not often I'm right (my wife tells me), but that time I were. And I'm glad you did (and then moved on to UA-cam). I've heard all the episodes, some of them several times, and watch all the videos...

    Otis, I'm a writer and my publicist has always told me to not answer the question they asked, but the question they should've asked. I've checked this against really seasoned writers and musicians and find they all do it. Check out a really good James Taylor interview and match the questions to the answers and you'll find that he's leading the interview, not following the interviewer. This means you have to do a lot more work, but the interview will be worth reading. Also, I much enjoy these Saturday talks!

    • @williethewanderinggypsy
      @williethewanderinggypsy Рік тому +6

      I AGREE! Think of every interviewer’s question as nothing more than a springboard to dive into any pool of conversation you’d like to swim in!

    • @anthonypioppi273
      @anthonypioppi273 Рік тому

      As someone who has interviewed hundreds and hundreds of people as a newspaper reporter and author, the path your publicist wants you to take means all your interviews will result in you sounding the same, with you offering little in the way substance. I'm guessing that is exactly what your publicist wants, a veritable press release that reveals nothing. A good reporter will see through your guise and lead you to where he/she wants you to go. Invariably, those will be the most interesting interviews to read. Subjects might think they know the questions that should be asked, but they don't always. Watch an interview where the subject stops, looks at the interviewer and says, "good question," or "I never thought of that." Those answers will be gold because they are honest, spontaneous and not rehearsed, much the chagrin of the publicist.

    • @ML-rz2hb
      @ML-rz2hb Рік тому +1

      @@anthonypioppi273 You genuinely misunderstand what I was talking about. I understand a lively interview as well as yourself. An imaginative answer lifts an interview and a literal answer to a sorry question produces the sameness you say publicists want. I'm sure you're a good interviewer but you're not hearing what I'm saying here.

    • @lordofthemound3890
      @lordofthemound3890 Рік тому

      @@anthonypioppi273I agree, but it takes a skilled interviewer to be able to do this. Your post reminds me of the old “Later with Bob Costas.” I don’t know how many times the person being interviewed responded with “great question” or “you’ve really done your homework.” Costas kinda gets on my nerves as a TV persona, but he was a great interviewer on “Later.”

      @@ML-rz2hb To your point when I watched Paul McCartney being interviewed by Rick Ruben in the documentary 'McCartney 3,2,1' I noticed that Paul would digest Rick's rather rote or awkward questions (a great producer no doubt- a work in progress as a journalist IMHO), take a pause- and then give a really interesting answer that was more of a story that might tangentially relate to what Rick asked, but more importantly the answer informed the viewer with rich layered personal information that only McCartney could provide. It was the right thing to do and he did it seamlessly.

    I don’t say “thank you” often enough, but these UA-cam video podcasts are my favorite things on the internet…and I know exactly why. It’s the honesty; I can tell every word you say comes from the heart. To borrow from Susanna Clark’s song, “You gotta post, like you don’t need the followers”. I appreciate every single one and I’m going to do what I can do to support with more than “thank you’s”.

    I found your “Thanks for Giving a Damn” podcast completely randomly one night several years ago, and ended up binge-listening for days. My husband overheard it once and then he got hooked. He told a friend about it, etc. etc. Man, those were some great interviews. Besides the content of the stories, I always appreciated how you gave the interviewee space. You were the perfect host, asking thoughtful questions but giving them the full stage. I was so happy when I found that you’d migrated to UA-cam, and I bought your latest record and love it! By the way, some of your podcasts about Bill Monroe are my favorite things ever.

No putting on airs to build a brand with you; just an honest cup of coffee and a love for the things you love. I dig your Saturday videos, and I am regularly thrilled by the great interviews you do. They are the opposite of that big-time publication that sent you questions from the same template 3 different times. Talking about newspapers... Growing up my family subscribed daily. I subscribed too as a young adult myself and then tried the online editions and stopped subscribing to delivery due to their own marketing and pricing. I used to read nearly every local print issue I got, plus the WSJ often cover to cover on my daily train commute to work. I looked at a selection of newspapers in the grocery store recently. $3.50 to $5 per newspaper. Not a special edition, but on a regular weekday. I read major news coverage in real time through their phone apps, and videos from journalists' reports or interviews here on youtube throughout the day now. Your interviews here and podcast are a highlight, Otis. In an earlier era, you could be successful on radio, TV, magazines or whatever. Thanks for the Saturday ☕️ and have a great day.

    Lunchtime here so I'm joining you with some bagel and eggs, with a nice cup of tea. With regards to your Podcast, I had fallen behind on those but when the pandemic happened, I swear I went and listened to every single past episode and to say many of them were an education for me is an understatement, especially the ones with the old bluegrass legends who played with Hank Williams, Bill Munroe and the like. Real, genuine folk whose stories perhaps would never had been heard like that before unless you had interviewed them. I hope you're super proud of those, because you should be. I wasn't aware of the pandora's box, anywhere we can listen to those? As for promoters being asked by newspapers for interviews, in all honesty, it was one of the reasons I gave up promoting, when I Lived in Brighton. You are exactly correct Otis. It turned into US (YOU) promoting their newspaper rather than anything else. In my experience, I never once had someone come to the show and say, i came because i read the interview in the newspaper. Not once! :-) Then small bloggers with zero followers would come along and ask for interviews or promising to review the show, then would ask for a guest list the length of my arm and promoting, for me at least, became more about fending these people off than it was trying to promote the show. Anyway, I loved the podcast and I love watching these UA-cam videos. All the best to you Otis. Martin.

    Thank you Otis for giving me something to look forward to every Saturday. UA-cam's recommendations often miss the mark but I'm so glad it recommended your channel. I've discovered so much music through this channel that I wouldn't have listened to otherwise- thank you.

    It’s interesting you mentioned U Tube being a lifeline for you during COVID. Being isolated, watching U Tube was a lifeline for me. Folks like you, Leland Sklar, Casino Guitars,etc were my lifeline to the world. It really made it easier to survive all the negativity. It still does.

    Mr. Gibbs. Your contributions are so very important and so valuable. Please keep it coming. I'm a relatively new subscriber here, and just now have signed up for your pandora podcasts. The respect you said you received is well-earned.

    Friends of mine where invited to be on a show to talk about their new album. The host dropped the question "So, what are your favorite war crimes?" They were dumbfounded.

    Otis, we are only a year apart in our age. I am 55. When I started learning guitar, in the late 70's, my first guitar teacher was Chester Ross here in Mountain View Arkansas. He had played the Opry a couple of times as a backup. You and I are cut from the same clothe I fear. As I grow older, I find myself reflecting on my younger years. When my parents were listening to Willie, Merle, Waylon, and Jackson Browne. As far as I have gotten away from my roots in my past years, I find myself relying on those same roots to ground me. I find so much comfort in the music I grew up listening to my parents and their friends play, dance, and party too. All of the Honky Tonks in Memphis TN, where I lived till the age of 9, having to sleep in the back of my parents truck while they danced the night away in those honky Tonks would be considered child abuse nowadays. But between that and my Mamas 45's, I would never have been exposed to Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, and the Carpenters like I was. It is all I want to listen to and play nowadays. They say getting older sucks, and in some ways it does, but being able to reflect on my youth is not depressing for me at all. Like I said earlier, it grounds me. Have a wonderful weekend Otis. Good day.

    Otis, I've listened off and on since the pandemic, not having heard your music before. I have looked you up because of these videos, so there you go. You first grabbed my attention when I stumbled on a guest sharing a story about my favorite musician, which just proves your theory about the power of storytelling. Also, it's nice just to hear a pleasant voice being genuine and thoughtful, honest but kind, and interesting. I'm of an age where I'm learning this social media stuff like I just fell off a turnip truck, so I salute you diving in and making a go of what you do. I wish you continued success in your endeavors, good health and a peaceful spirit.

    Thank you for doing these stories. Indeed, for me at least, the stories were lost because I was not anywhere in the right circles to hear them. So, you do save those lost stories and I appreciate that I know them also.

    Hey there, Otis. Love the podcast, so many great stories by so many great musicians (you included, of course). Respect, passion and honesty is what comes to mind when listening to it. And so much positive attitude (badly needed). Thanks, man! Great job. Greetings from Spain (any chance or touring round here?)

    Mr. Gibbs, thank goodness you made the decisions you did. You have created a gem of a channel.
    If ever you are in need of a topic to explore, I'd love to hear stories about learning to play guitar. Kenny Vaughn shared a few comments on the subject in one of your conversations with him, but I wish there was more.
    Continued great success to you!
