    I think it is super important for beginners to focus on getting onto the board in a LOW stance. I practiced a lot on the dry, flat sand and focused on what Austin said. After commiting to a low stance, I stopped falling. Then I knew I was ready.

    this video helped me tremendously. unfortunately i dont have many opportunities to skimboard and learn, but this video helped me a lot. at first i always used to jump on the board, which would make it sink or slip out sideways and i was landing flat on my back. this past vacation i finally managed to get some decent drops done and slide a little bit. what i realized is, that it is really important to place you back foot horizontally on the board right after dropping. that way your boards nose will come up right away. the first dozen one-step-drops ive done, i did not focus on this and still the board would sink, because i´d walk onto the board with my feet placed vertically and then adjusted the back foot, which caused too much downward pressure, i think. i will - hopefully - get another opportunity to skimboard in mid january. btw i am 35 years old, living faaaaaaaaaaaar away from the sea. i used to skateboard a lot in my teenage years and early 20s, but skimboarding is a different challenge. anyway, id like to thank you, austin, for making such great tutorials. i hope i can get to the point where i can actually catch small waves and ride them a bit.

    Great video. It plays on a loop in my head when I’m at the beach trying to learn. Like any sport, a strong focus on the fundamentals early, pays the greatest dividends in the long term. Thanks for showing the way, Austin.

    Some of us get on front foot first. If you skate, the foot that's on the board, use that foot to get on first. If you haven't built a habit already then get on back foot first and see if that works for you. There is no "better" to do either. Back foot gets on easier in the sand, front foot gets on deeper, I guess, but after a while neither is a disadvantage. You will just adjust.

    this and the older AK vid on the one step got me one step dropping in two sessions.Probably would have got me one stepping on my first session if I paid closer attention to the arms swing. That was the key to getting the timing right for me. I even practise the arm swing when I am jogging down the beach with my surfboard - still a beginner, 5 weeks in so far.

    As always, great explanation! I learned so much from your tutorials over the years. Could you maybe do a tutorial once about the pumping techniques when on deeper water? I am now at the stage I want to go further on deeper water to hopefully get to the waves. I know you have one about turning the board sideways to get further out. I mean more how to deal with such a tiny wave and how to keep the speed pumping the board.

    I wish I would have seen this video a few days ago. First time attempting to skimboard. Complete epic fails. Yesterday, fractured my wrist (entered the board on the side…HUGE mistake). Today, after 50 or more fails, the wind caught the board, tip of the board flew up, Wham! Tip slammed into my nuts. Hit my hurt wrist again hearing and feeling bones crunch. Took about a 20 minute recovery period, back out hauling ass to the water the board slipped out and tore my groin muscle. I ended up bouncing my head off a long bed of shells. I tired a dozen or so more times until I could not walk anymore. Ok, I admit, I am 54 and at 235 lbs, a bit overweight I might have got too short and light of a board? Maybe next attempt a Wooden (heavier) board? 51” long vs the 48” foam/fiberglass board that I rented?? I shall be watching this video 30 more times. I can see clearly where I screwed up the last couple of days. I am determined to learn how to do this (old time surfer…lol 30 years ago and much lighter/in shape).

    "Practice on your front lawn" he says, and I thought he was somewhere in SoCal! 😆🥲 Great tips! The grip and footing tips I have not yet heard, the comparison with skating is interesting. Deciding if I want to get my kid on a skimboard before a skateboard, as she's obsessed with skateboards but I felt the skim might be safer? Kiddo's obsessed with water too, just found out today that you can take skimboards to the waves! I had no idea!!! 🏄🌴

    Hi. Nice video, thank you. I tried hard to do one step drop and still without success coz I need to drop a board on my left leg step. And it's incredible hard for me coz my jumping leg is right one. But I watched this video and see you do it same. You dropping the board from the right leg same as me. That's why you have to do additional short step with left one. I am confused now. Is it ok to do same ? Maybe I do it normally and don't need to try fix it?

    Hey Austin, I’ve been doing the one step drop (I’m regular footed) with my front foot going on first. It works well but I’ve noticed I can’t reach waves and ride them in. Is getting on with the back foot first going to make that big of a difference? Please let me know

    • @oilcanracer6388
      @oilcanracer6388 4 роки тому +1

      Traveling over deeper water has more to do with speed, board dynamics(flat spot, rocker, shape per weight, etc), water smoothness, water moving towards you or away and whether your board is sidways (taking advantage of your flat spot, less drag) or straight to get over chop. Mostly just keep at it. Watch those that are better can give you a clue, but the more you ride, that experience will help a lot. I have more skim time on each of the beaches I have skimmed than most skimmer have total.

    • @AustinKeen
      @AustinKeen  4 роки тому

      like Oilcan mentioned there are a lot of factors when skimboarding out to a wave. If you feel you're transferring your momentum smoothly getting on front foot first then it could be some other factors that are holding you back from reaching waves like your timing and/or board.

    Where I am, the only way I can get waves is when there’s fairly high winds. I one step, but I can only get about half a step in before my board comes back and catches wind and hits me. What exactly can I do in this scenario?

    • @luf0u
      @luf0u 4 роки тому

      ORPHAN MEATLOAF get the board wet and kick sand onto the bottom. This weights so board so it won’t catch the wind when you drop.
