Haha nice observation, he didn't completely master all the elements even though he was a gifted avatar. He still needed bit more Earth Training (His opposite element) and he had just begun Fire Training. He mastered Air and Water, though, and nearly mastered Earth an Fire before Summer's end. Even his past lives were impressed. Korra managed the basics of Water, Earth at Fire at age 7 and (I think) mastered them at 17 (with restrictions). Though she and her crew cannot be compaired to Aang's. ;)
They do have a few shorts made for Avatar but I think it'd be funny if they did a series of them revolving around what it would be like if Aang hadnt been the avatar. They could do one for each main character^_^
