I have some questions about vtp pruning .. suppose switch 1 is vtp pruning enabled. so what it does, it says other switches that please send only VLAN 20 traffic to me. now if it does not take VLAN 10 traffic then how can switch 2 and switch 0 s, VLAN 10 communicate with each other. because in the previous video we see that if switch 1 has no VLAN 10, then communication cannot be established.

Hello Imram. I have to say... amazing work! Not only do you transfer your knowledge and experience, but you accomplish this with good foundation and hands on approach. Your decision to use Packet Tracer was plausible as it lets even the beginner to deep dive... contrary to other tools which are much more complex, difficult and full of errors. I found your video series while looking for answers from another video series. There is not a one size fits all, so having a go-to subject series that I can alternate with proved very productive. This particular video had a section which created a little of confusion, which was when setting up the VTP. As you expand to the other SW1 and SW2 the user would experience loss of vlan interconnectivity due to small unclear aspect of the message which explained the SERVER/CLIENT/TRANSPARENT options. The positive aspect of this small event was that I went back to turn on VTP version 2 as well as set SW1, SW2 to CLIENT and then re-creat the lost interconnection. No need to make urgent changes, just keep it in mind for future revisions. Thanks again for your work and training. Is definately a blessing!

very good video. Grateful you actually explained VTP Pruning properly as very hard at the CCNA level to see the explanation of how it is enabled GLOBALLY and how it works AUTOMATICALLY. Regarding using switchport trunk allowed vlan command to manually filter vlans allowed on any trunk link, the main difference is that though it provides a lot more control over what vlans go across your network, it is also very time consuming if you have dozens or even hundreds of switches in your network. Also, as you said, if you suddenly have a host device in vlan 20 on switch 1, then you would have to manually change the allowed value and add 20 to it, whereas VTP pruning enabled does this for you automatically. Shame that packet tracer still to this day in February 2019 (version 7.2) does not have this command simulated. Thanks again Imran.
Hi Imran, at 22:10 you mentioned that vlan 20 traffic (layer 2), will go to switch 1 and from then to switch 2. My question is if the destination Mac is at laptop 1 (of green circle), then will switch 1 still sends this traffic to switch 2 via trunk interface? Switch takes the decision of forwarding the frames using Mac table. Correct me if I was wrong. Thanks
TO ALL if you are wondering why different switches had different revision no. its because for first server Rev. no. is 4 because we made 4 changes creating vlan 10 and 20 , naming them managment and sales for second switch its 3 coz we creating 2 vlans 10 and 20 but only named one for 3rd switch we only created but never changed it name
Thanks for the great video! have one doubt that in our practice all the switches are in SERVER mode, So how it it replicate those vlan in all the switches, that we made in Switch0
After setting VTP password on the switch that acts as the VTP server, you will need to set VTP status to Client on other switches in order for the VLANS on the server to copy over to the other switches.
I think you meant - Initially, if all the 3 switches were in their default 'Server' mode, why did the Switch 0 database not get updated in Switch 3 and thereby not allowing a device connected to Switch 3 (on VLAN 10) to communicate with another device connected to Switch 1 (on VLAN 10). The answer to that is what I think Robb explained i.e. by default unless the domain and password is not set, replications does not happen. NetworKing team might to be able to confirm this.

Hi Imran Sir,your teaching material and the way you teach is really good and worthy.I have a doubt and that is as you said we need to make a domain so that the vtp will be applied to the switch. In the same way we assign ip domain name while activating ssh service in switch as you showed in before videos. So that domain and this domain are same or we need to give domain name for every service or protocol that we assign. Please explain this

With all due respect, sir, it would be great if you would just answer on a question once in a while in the comment section :) Nice series, liked and subbed.
Question about the Pruning Command Imran...when you said it doesn't send unnecessary traffic to other switches that are not in the same Vlan....but in a Broadcast for example it would not send a broadcast traffic between "different" Vlans anyway right...?? Can you explain the Concept a little deeper.
THANK YOU SIR! though , I have a question.! what is going to happen if the switch 3 is trying to send a packet with a header of vlan20 to switch 2 when "switchport trunk allowed vlan 20" is manually configured? will the switch2 still get the packet?
as i put the command #vtp pruning... as you show in this video... its not working and showing invalid... would you recommend another command for pruning...
That is only because we are using cisco packet tracer which is an emulator. It didn't work for Imran in the video and didn't work for me either on the latest version of packet tracer. However if you pull out a real cisco switch that command would work. In some cases it would be better you use the "switchport trunk allowed vlan 10" command and in other case it is probably better to use the vtp pruning command.
Hi Imran, Your videos are EXCELLENT, Got small doubt, can we make the switch to Client mode from server mode. What will be the effect, Is there any preventive measures to stop someone doing such things. Help appreciated, Thanks.
Regarding the revision number in the switch 3 it is 1.but you said it should be 2. I don't know why ? In previous class you have mentioned that the new switch will have the revision number of 0 and you have added only one VLAN. Then what is the possibility of the revision number being 2?
Greetings, imran your videos have been really helpful , but i have some doubts about the revision number of the switches at the start of your video. so, are you sure it is a bug in the simulator?
Using Packet Tracer.. When I deleted VLAN 200 and VLAN 500 from switch0, I saw them gone from Switch1 but they remained in Switch3. Can you please tell me why Switch3 did not get updated?
Hi Imran, thanks for a wonderful video. But what i dont understand is for what purpose do we use native VLAN. If all those trunk ports are having native vlan 1as default, what is the problem. Only VLANS communicate with their specific VLAN associates. Why do we need a native VLAN. Can you give such a scenario where we need to set a native VLAN. Cany one in this thread give me a reply. How do you protect VTP Clients from collecting from the wrong VTP server? Can a hacker plug a switch as a VTP server with higher revision and take over the clients? The only command to be a VTP client is vtp mode client, but did not seem that you can protect it by inputting a domain or password? Please advise. Thanks and awesome videos btw!

regarding to Native Vlan .. in your video you showed us how to change the native vlan on the SENDER switch ( Switch1-F0/4) and the RECEIVER switch (Switch2- F0/1) still has the default Vlan(vlan1). you didn't show us how to change the native vlan on the RECEIVER switch.!! which (as you said) traffics will be dropped if the native vlans didn't match!! so whats the benefit of changing the native vlan on the SENDER switch while we can not change the native vlan on the RECEIVER switch !!!! please reply and explain to me .. it is very important to me. best regards
Hi Imran and thanks for your video. When I add vtp domain nwking.org to the server, my 2 computers ports for vlan 10 become red and disconnected. Your advice would be greatly appreciated
Hello sir, very great to see your videos. Our organisation is great fan of yours. You were confused about that revision version. In switch 1, u created 2 VLANs and named 2 VLANs, amounting it to 4. In switch 2, created 2 VLANS but named only 1 VLAN therefore amounting it to 3 revision Number. And in the last only u created 1 VLANs but not named also, i.e it comes to revision number 1.
Dear Karthikeyan K, Thank you for your comments. Please like this video and subscribe to be notified of new videos. Also please feel free to support us by shopping from our website: www.nwking.org/shop/
thats the thing ive also asked my self... he has unconfigured switches all in servermode with vtp-domain NULL and no password. but its possible to have more than one vtp-server in the vtp-domain. the vtp-server with the less revision number is orientating on the vtp-server with the higher revision number. so he created two vlans in switch0 but switch1 is also member of the same vtp-domain NULL and has not updated the name of vlan 20 in its database. means that that all vtp-servers in vtp-domain NULL will not replicate their revision number and vlan database to the vtp-server with less revision number? will two vtp-server just work together when a vtp-domain has been set manualy?
Karthikeyan is correct. In the switch showing only 1 revision it is not a bug in the simulator, it is because there was a new vlan created (vlan10) but it was not given a name. So it will only show up as 1 revision until you name it then that will be the 2nd revision. Great videos by the way I love them all. Thank you NetworKing.
@@huffterbertkanftmann4698 this confused me at first too when I was studying VTP. Basically, the first switch that changes its domain name from NULL to any domain name will then advertise this through VTP frames across its trunk links to connected switches and only then will they all start talking to each other with VTP domain frames. Then, the one with the highest revision number will send across its vlan db information to be copied by all other switches in server/client mode.
What happens after the error message pop up in packet tracer that native vlan miss match found? do we have to manually configure native vlan to 10 in the switch02(third switch) aswell? also if we not configure will trunking happen? and if we configuer native v lan as vlan 10, in both switches native vlan will be 10 and what about sw0??
miss matching vlan is because some switch in your network is not set with vlan 10 native, also you have to make sure that vlan 10 is set for trunk (if is set auto force it trunk) and is not used anything else in other switches. You have to confure vlan 10 native in the switches you want as sw0 if you have not made vtp server yet, the vtp sets it for you if it was previously set
I thought that you are suppose to look at whether or not the vtp 2 mode is disabled? If you were to say it's using version 2 instead of version 1 on a test wouldn't that be incorrect because version 2 is disabled? Great video just want to make sure my understanding is correct.

Hello Imram. I have to say... amazing work! Not only do you transfer your knowledge and experience, but you accomplish this with good foundation and hands on approach. For VTP clients, the easier way is to change the VTP mode to server for a while and make then change. Then change it to client mode again. =D

If switch is transparent mode mean all port consider vlan 1

Hi Imran , could you explain what is tagging in vlan ?
Hi Salim, Tagging in Vlan is a method which is attached on frame by switch to recognize by receiver switch that this frame came for this Vlan. Vlan Tag consists of TPID, Prioirity, CFI and VLAN ID.

How would an internal intranet function when mail messages need to be sent across a multitude of VLANs?
I have some questions about vtp pruning .. suppose switch 1 is vtp pruning enabled. so what it does, it says other switches that please send only VLAN 20 traffic to me. now if it does not take VLAN 10 traffic then how can switch 2 and switch 0 s, VLAN 10 communicate with each other. because in the previous video we see that if switch 1 has no VLAN 10, then communication cannot be established.
hi thanks for the videos i love all videos you made. what if the VTP server switch down for the power issue or cable cut, is there are any problem ? if its happen
Thanks. We can use password to protect it updating from other rogue servers. It has been explained in the video. Subscribe to our UA-cam channel and review us on Facebook: facebook.com/NetworKingConsultant/reviews
hi Imran,

Sir, i have gone through all 14 days tutorial its been amazing learning and i am privileged to get this videos. Your a great teacher who has so much knowledge and big heart of sharing the knowledge with people. i just have one question , can we clear CCNA exam by just knowing all the things you have thought in these tutorials or we need much more ? if we need much more what would you suggest the students to read.
Thank you. You can clear the CCNA exam if you watch all our videos, which should be atleast 50-60 videos. We are trying our best to produce more videos as soon as possible. Stay tuned for more.

Sure sir thank you .
regarding to Native Vlan ..
in your video you showed us how to change the native vlan on the SENDER switch ( Switch1-F0/4) and the RECEIVER switch (Switch2- F0/1) still has the default Vlan(vlan1).
you didn't show us how to change the native vlan on the RECEIVER switch.!! which (as you said) traffics will be dropped if the native vlans didn't match!!
so whats the benefit of changing the native vlan on the SENDER switch while we can not change the native vlan on the RECEIVER switch !!!!
please reply and explain to me .. it is very important to me.
best regards
Hi Imran and thanks for your video. When I add vtp domain nwking.org to the server, my 2 computers ports for vlan 10 become red and disconnected. Your advice would be greatly appreciated
Can you email me the full topology in provide solution
Hello sir, very great to see your videos. Our organisation is great fan of yours. You were confused about that revision version. In switch 1, u created 2 VLANs and named 2 VLANs, amounting it to 4. In switch 2, created 2 VLANS but named only 1 VLAN therefore amounting it to 3 revision Number. And in the last only u created 1 VLANs but not named also, i.e it comes to revision number 1.

thats the thing ive also asked my self... he has unconfigured switches all in servermode with vtp-domain NULL and no password. but its possible to have more than one vtp-server in the vtp-domain. the vtp-server with the less revision number is orientating on the vtp-server with the higher revision number. so he created two vlans in switch0 but switch1 is also member of the same vtp-domain NULL and has not updated the name of vlan 20 in its database. means that that all vtp-servers in vtp-domain NULL will not replicate their revision number and vlan database to the vtp-server with less revision number? will two vtp-server just work together when a vtp-domain has been set manualy?
What is the significance of the two version no's of VTP?
Very nice video
Hello, how did you get the end device PC to show .1, .2, .3, etc.
it is just text he put above the pc icon to easy the identification (sorry for late answer)
I thought that you are suppose to look at whether or not the vtp 2 mode is disabled? If you were to say it's using version 2 instead of version 1 on a test wouldn't that be incorrect because version 2 is disabled? Great video just want to make sure my understanding is correct.
Thank you. it is very helpful :)
