    1930's
These Calypsonians were exponents of the art form or the genre known as “Extempo or ”War” and they hale from the island of Trinidad, the Land Of Calypso. Extempo is stilled practiced in Trinidad & Tobago today.
Their names reflect their lyrical prowess and ability to devastate their opponents in any verbal competition or Battle.
With out a doubt this is the equiveant of today’s Rappers in a ”Rap Battle”.The basic elements of hip-hop --boasting raps, rival posses, uptown throwdowns, and political commentary -- were all present in Trinidadan music by 1900.
Listen to the manner in which these Calypsonians deliver their poetry, the way they flow, their rhythm, rhyme, timing and the manner in which they insult their opponent. Diss one another-:)
In this War Calypso "Hodini" is the object of scorn, a Calypsonian who lived in New York at the time and one who insulted Trinidad Calypsonians with impunity from his safe and distant refuge in the USA.
One can perhaps say that these were original Rappers !!!
This “Extempo War” took place during the mid 1930’s.

You are not totally right or wrong :-)
    It's both Kaiso and Rap!
Literally, it was "them" who invented not just the actual genre, but the word "as it is" (rap).
The early "kaisonians" actually used both the word (rap) and the meaning of it it's actually derived from that.
They gathered and rap cultural and political topics (just as today's rappers still do). Anything from advertisement for a "new milk box", "the latest dance in town", to controversial world-wide topics such as the situation in Europe at the time.
If you want to know more, find out or ask. I'd gladly share what I've learned (One of Roaring Lion's son is one of the "direct sources of information" about this. Listening to his stories about the topic is "like going back in time" ;-)
    One love all

It's Calypso. Not rap. Just something y'all do on your own time.

      My good fella!
It is indeed, Kaiso (not Calypso yet) ;-)
But, (BIG BUT), literally, it was "them" who invented not just the actual genre, but the word "as it is" (rap).
(Among others, Kaisonian's played a great part in keeping "the allies forces morals from hitting rock bottom" (as they were often performing for "the allies troops").
But, I'm glad you jumped anyway ;-)
