  • On November 15, 2013, Steve Hall and Kauri Jacob discovered Sunlight Canyon & Sunlight Bridge in Death Valley National Park. Sunlight Canyon has glowing red and yellow towering narrows with Sunlight Bridge (the 13th major natural bridge to be discovered in Death Valley) contained within. Returning to the location of this discovery in January of 2024, along with family members Daria & Stefan and friend Elyscia, Steve takes viewers with him to see these places in Death Valley Discoveries Episode 5. The parking area for this hike is located about 1 mile west of the parking area for Red Wall Canyon. Our hiking route was 10.1 miles in total. (This is a challenging hike not meant for the general public.)

Mr. Hall, a total pleasure viewing your family adventure. What memories you create for Stefan. In days of short attention spans I’m loving your long format because the narration, cinematography, and soundtrack blend into a masterpiece. Your videos would make great shows at the Furnace Creek Visitors Center. Now I’m anxious to see your next episode. Hats off to Kauri as well!

Thanks so much for your comment, DV Dazed. At one time, I was going to do a slideshow presentation for the public one evening in the FC Auditorium but for some reason it never materialized.

Wow man, what perfect timing. I was in Death Valley when I saw this video was posted so I immediately changed plans and visited the bridge for the first time on 1/26/2024. I could still follow your footprints in spite of the rains earlier this week. What a magical place!

Indeed the long bypass and short bypass are both important parts of the Rock Nettle RS portion of the hike.

Thank you for sharing this Steve. You may have seen our footprints in Rock Nettle, we were in there in December and were clearly the first ones in after the flood. I saw the mouth of Sunlight but didn't have time to explore it, I'm excited to go back in a couple of weeks to see it!

Very cool glad you got to do the hike. I'm glad the flooding didn't change these canyons much at all. Did you use the short bypass or long bypass to get up Rock Nettle Red Slot?

We used your short bypass, I still have all the info from Panamint City (that I don't share with anyone!), but we intend to do it again to photograph under better conditions for better glow, so we may try Kauri's route next time. Hope we run into you someday, you've been a huge inspiration to explore Death Valley. I've been photographing there for 10 years, but you have me hooked on canyons now!

That's awesome glad I was able to help out a fellow hiker. I've always said that I'm a canyon hiker, not a peak hiker.
