    In 2021 I guided six of the worlds 8000m mountains, summiting four of them and turning back just meters from the summit of two - Makalu and Dhaulagiri. I tried, when ever possible and appropriate to do so, to capture the small intricacies of the mountain and the terrain we climb on route to the summit. Join me for the full journey to the summit!

      @@JonGupta This video was amazing. Your videos actually show what it’s like to climb these mountains, unlike other climbing videos and documentaries. I always find myself coming back to your channel to rewatch your K2, Everest, and Lhotse videos every few months. I’m only 15, but I dream of doing what you have someday. I have summited a lot of 5,000 and 6,000 foot mountains in the northeastern United States, which isn’t much but it’s the best I can do close to home. I’ll hopefully be summiting Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous US this Summer as well. Best of wishes, and I cannot wait to see what else you will accomplish!

      @@JohnRumelfanger Hey John, thanks for the comment above. Super cool you're getting out and doing these mountains already and goods luck with Mount Whitney when you give it a go! I don't think I climbed anything "big"until i was in my 20's and then I went pretty hard into the big mountains both for fun (with friends) and for work (leading trips). I've been super fortunate to have done many of the climbs i've done. Sadly one of my best trips I didn't film at all (organising and leading the currently 7 summits speed record for Steve Plain in 2018), but hey ho. Enjoy the mountains and take care!

    I had to watch this again this morning- just amazing! The conditions were almost ideal!
    I watched your interview with Alan! Love your perspective on life Jon! Your experience in Belize at 18 was definitely character building and perfect timing. I live here in Salt Lake City and, a good friend of mine use to work for an agency as a guide where, he would take juveniles who, either volunteered, or had their parents put them into this program which was all about learning self-sufficiency, leadership skills, problem-solving, etc. His schedule was a week on, week off; he would oversee about 12-15 kids and have another guide to assist him.
    They would usually be located in a place called Capitol Reef National Park or Goblin Valley, and he would take them all over and teach them life skills, as well as learning from them in the process. Was an amazing job for him! I can see how it would be great being a part of one of your treks as well! Thanks again!

    Been waiting for an in-depth Kangchenjunga video for some time! The available video content on Kangchenjunga is scanty or, what is available is relatively short.
    Even though it was a short run, many people don't realize that K was thought to be the tallest mountain in the world for a few years before the eventual "discovery" and surveillance of Everest by Europeans. Andrew Waugh "officially" announced K's height in 1847(Wasn't announced till 1849), which dethroned Nanda Devi at the time.
    There were already suspicions about another peak called "b" measured by John Armstrong. Waugh went to Darjeeling and measured a distant peak called "gamma," and concluded they were one and the same. This, of course, began the "discovery" of Everest and eventually dethroned Kangchenjunga as well!
    Thanks Jon!

You have a real signature to tell us about your passion, your mountains, always with this simplicity that characterizes you. • @timedwards5734
      @timedwards5734 9 місяців тому +2

      @dougdavis8986 The early summiteers on mountains like Kanchenjunga did have fixed ropes as the teams laid 'siege' to the peaks. Jon is virtually climbing 'Alpine style' in comparison. The amount of climbers who continue to die on 8000m peaks show that it is still the ultimate adventure. There are climbers who climb without supplemental oxygen but that massively increases the risk of not making it back down. I'm pleased that Jon climbs with the obvious ethos of getting to the top is optional but getting back down is mandatory. He makes his climbs look relatively easy due to his constant optimism, but they're anything but. Even with fixed roles one mistake when clipping in and including is often fatal. Plus avalanche, rock fall, HACE & HAPE etc. Enough adventure there for anyone!!!.

    • @timedwards5734

      @timedwards5734 in the old days they didn't show up with the ropes already fixed by Sherpas. They fixed them themselves as they climbed. Huge difference. You can always tell an armchair mountaineer. They love the 'making it down is mandatory' quote!

    Congratulations! I love Kanchenjunga. For me it's the most impressive mountain in the world, certainly of the 8000-ers. Kind of surprised the route is so non-technical, though I'm sure it wasn't easy by any means. Originally the summit was considered inviolable, sacred, and the tradition was to leave it untouched, topping out just below.

      It still is he isn't on the true summit

    • @timedwards5734
      @timedwards5734 9 місяців тому

      @Stratiis The summit of the main peak is in Nepal and climbers are allowed to stand on the highest point and pay a royalty for doing so. So Jon was on the main summit. Some climbers, mainly Indian climbers, do stop short of the main peak. But if you're attempting to climb all 14 8000m peaks you have to stand on the highest point for the summit to be verified

    I have been watching your videos on rotation. They are epic honestly. As someone from a tropical country i.e. Thailand, videos of your amazing ascents feel eccentric and alluring to me. I don't call myself a climber but a trekker but your mountaineering totally inspires me to go out to the mountains more. Though I go there to trek but I think the healing power of nature and mountains is just as powerful. xx
