Hello and welcome to The Trove!
This is my personal ranking of all 60 movies released by Walt Disney Animation Studios. This collection of movies is sometimes referred to as the Disney Animated Canon, and I've ranked them from least to most favorite based on my personal enjoyment of each film. It's not a worst to best list, so if my ranking seems a little whack to you, just know that it's because my personal bias is on full display here. I'm aiming for honesty!

Talking to people about their favourite disney movie is always interesting because you get so many different answers. Often, there's obviously a lot of nostalgia at play but that's not a bad thing. It's also so personal what stories you respond to or not. I for example never really could get into Cinderella, Aladdin or Pinocchio which are ranked pretty high here.
My top 3 movies are
1. Robin Hood
2. Beauty and the Beast
3. Tangled
I could always sit down to watch these movies and have a good time, no matter what.

i so agree, i think it’s a mix of nostalgia and personal bias! we all live very different lives and have very different backgrounds. someone who is latinx might put encanto as number one because they see themselves represented, or have a similar family dynamic. someone who feels out of place and longs for change might prefer the little mermaid. for me, i always resonated with tangled because i think we can all relate to suddenly seeing life through a different lense, especially as we get older. i was struggling with addiction when i rewatched it and the reprise of “when will my life begin” while she leaves her tower almost brought me to tears. when i became sober it felt as though i started to live my life again, similar to how she felt in that moment. it sounds stupid but these movies can be taken literally or metaphorically, and i prefer to analyze movies with both in mind. i think it’s so interesting to hear peoples favorites because there’s usually a reason behind it. sometimes it’s the storyline and cinematography, other times it’s the message behind it. or maybe both! some people might’ve watched tangled and thought it was boring, while someone like me can find meaning even in the smallest details. there’s so many different reasons while people prefer one movie over another. i think it comes down to personal preference and what you really want out of a movie. if i want a movie that’s pleasant on the eyes, i’ll probably turn to sleeping beauty. if i want to listen to good music, i’ll probably choose the little mermaid! and i also agree that nostalgia can make a huge difference. i had a friend that was the youngest of four children, so she never really watched disney movies when she was growing up. she doesn’t have any interest in watching them because she was never introduced to them. i’m glad my parents raised me on these movies because it’s helped me appreciate animation as an art form. they’re also my go-to comfort movies :)

Have you seen the series Legend of The 3 Caballeros? It's as good as Ducktales or Darkwing Duck. It's great for both fans and non-fans of the original film.

To be honest, I like the old Disney movies with the 'scratchy' animation. It feels so classic.
My favourite Disney movie is probably The lion king. And I also really like brother bear, tarzan and encanto.

And also, I agree with you, about home on the range. It is so hated on! Personally, I kind of enjoy that film.
The underrated moment in Hercules is realizing Hercules is not Megs first love. First love isn't usually true love

Love to see another advocate for Bolt! It was one of my favorite movies when I was young and Tangled was one of the first movies I saw in theaters. I feel like I have my own bias towards those movies, but I also genuinely love them. Loved watching these movies (and your breakdowns) ranking them. I found myself disagreeing quite a bit with the order of your list, but that's part of the fun about these things, I suppose. You have a wonderful way with words and you're very insightful.

Awesome video! I agreed with many of your rankings and your points to the high, medium, and low ranked movies. One I was very surprised at was your #5. I did NOT expect it to be so high but I do see and understand the points that you made. It never resonated with me as a kid and only cared to watch it maybe 3 times but that's me 🙂 I'm so happy with your 10th place one. I enjoy the movie so so much so it was nice to see it ranked so high. It just gets me in such a happy and feel good mood.

its rough out here for us disney fans when someone asks our favorite movie! for ~personal~ reasons, alice in wonderland and tangled are my ultimate favorites!! but i think moana is one of the best movies ever made and its so unfair to have to pick just one for #1 but i loved your choice!! i watched the little mermaid every single day as a kid so it means a lot to me too. i loved your rankings even tho lilo & stitch was CRIMINALLY low (its top 5!!) :((

Your ranking is crazy!
Tangled is my favourite Disney movie ever, because the fact that a long-lost princess who longs for freedom and finds a handsome partner (which is one of the gorgeous Disney romances). I like Rapunzel, she's beautiful and energetic, this movie has great CGI animation and realistic styles. I thank Glen Keane and Hyrum Osmond for this visual masterpiece and some of Keane's characters are one of my favourites. 👸🏼🎆
I respect the list but my top 10 is:

Your ranking is VERY different to mine, but I loved to hear your opinion on this awesome movies. I'm personally not a fan of (for example) Pocahontas or Frozen 2, but I know they have their merits, and is nice to find someone who likes them.
My favorite is Treasure Planet for the perfect story, for Jim Hawkins, for John Silver, for the songs of John Rzeznik, the concept, the final moment, I loved everything.
I will never forget this one especially Jims loss of his father and how much worth Silver has for him

Lilo and Stitch, Atlantis, and Wish are my top favorite Disney movies.
Nice! A lot of takes I personally disagree with, but this is a well made and respectful video
snow white was the first disney movie i saw when i was a kid (that was more than 50 years ago) and it remains my favorite for nostalgic reasons. my second favorite is the little mermaid which i've watched when i was already a father with 2 kids. i actually loved the songs in this film more than those in snow white but i didn't like the idea of changing the tragic ending of andersen's tale. maybe the change to a happy ending is more appropriate for kids who would watch the film. and as they get older and become acquainted with andersen's tale and its tragic ending, they can then decide if the disney version is better or not.
Sword and the Stone has always been one of my favorites. Cant believe it would rank so low to anyone

10. The Little Mermaid - I love this movie, even though Ariel makes me SO mad as a woman 😂 But the animation is beautiful, the songs are amazing, and the characters are great too!
9. The Aristocats - seeing this so low on your list hurt me lol it's so nostalgic. I love the characters and how fun this movie is.
8. The Princess and The Frog - totally agree with what you said. It'd be higher on my list if she wasn't a frog for most of the movie
7. Zootopia - amazing story, it was fresh and new to see. The plot twist totally got me.
6. Encanto - All the characters are VERY relatable/I can totally see them in parts of my family. Love the music too.
5. Aladdin - I just can't NOT love this movie. The music, the score, the animation, and the message are amazing.
4. Moana - Everything I said about Aladdin, just on a greater level. I also feel like I can relate to Moana as well.
3. Hercules - Such a fun movie to watch! I've always loved this movie!
2. Mulan - She was the first Disney princess I truly LOVED! The plot is amazing and so is the animation!
1. The Lion King - My favorite of ALL time, not just Disney! I grew up on this as a kid and I still love and enjoy it to this day! This movie has aged SO well!

Great video :) I love so many of these films it's definitely hard to rank, but I did end up watching all 58 (at the time) films during that first bit of covid lockdown in 2020. It was a perfect way to escape into these world in such an uncertain time.
I gotta say I do have a soft spot for the earlier films from the 40s-60s ish based on pure atmosphere and nostalgia alone. Something about those old timey opening credits always gets me. That being said my personal favorite is Alice In Wonderland. I just love the nonsense and variety of characters throughout it as well as the setting of the movie so much. It's one of those movies I can put on whenever no matter how long it's been since the last time I saw it.
My favorite Renaissance films have to be Mulan and The Little Mermaid, and from the Revival era definitely the Frozen films and Zootopia. (BTW love the Melody Time appreciation it's also my favorite package film it's so lovely)

There were a ton on here that should be higher and others lower, but I respect your opinion. Also Little Mermaid is my mom’s favorite Disney movie while mine is Beauty And The Beast.

My favorite Disney movie is princess and the frog
This is a really great ranking. I am a little disappointed that my all time favourite movie atlantis is ranked so low. It has nearly everything wonderfully put together. A dark and dangerous adventure, a beautiful new world, beautiful and creative design for advanced technology, an amazing love interest, a wonderful main character with some insane character development, very realistic side characters and disney's best villain.
I can understand though that a little too many characters were added and there personalities were not very fleshed out. But each one was unique and served their purpose at one point.
Thank goodness for Snow White's ranking!! I'm so tired of seeing people dunk on her and the movie as a whole. It's been one of my favorites since I was a literal infant, so I'm really happy to see somebody else that gets it.
The first is truly still one of the best. Always love hearing from another Snow White fan!
I agree on most of the ranks in this list, especially the top, but some choices are weird to me like Zootopia, Frozen II or Lady and the Tramp being so high, Frozen II was a mess and way worse than the original, and Zootopia is very overrated, the twisted villain is one of the worst ever if not the worst. And I think Pocahontas was underrated again in this ranking, I can't care less about the term "problematic" as most films rated as so don't have any problem at all, and this is one of them, it's just flawless IMO. And other underrated films like Cinderella, 101 Dalmatians, Peter Pan, Brother Bear, The Aristocats or The Sword in the Stone.

I loved this miniseries. You inspired me to make more rankings like this, and I’m planning on ranking the Disney Direct-to-Video Sequels. After that, I might plan on ranking all the Pixar movies and then the Live-Action Remakes.

I disagree with just about everything you said lol. The "scratchy" animation of the older films for me is what makes them charming :) You must be under 30, so you wouldn't get the charm or appeal of the old stuff.
I'm almost 30 lol. I grew up watching most of these movies. I just prefer more polished animation. No worries about disagreeing though, I can see the charm and nostalgia in it.
I can't believe you ranked The Sword & The Stone so lonely! It's a classic!

I’m at 54 in the Chicken Little lack of appearance is stunning. I think you’re the first person who’s ever not ranked Chicken Little bottom 2 or 3 at best.

I had a lot disney movies on cassette as I was a child and I had 5 favorites and from this 5 I had 2 absolutly favorites and they are Cinderella and the Fox and the Hound the other 3 movies are Aristocats, 101 Dalmatians and Robin Hood

I Love your top 3 choices.
Some of the numbers will shift around from time to time, but my rough top 10 are:
10. Robin Hood - there's something so classic about this movie. I adore all the characters especially Robin.
9. The Little Mermaid - Ariel is so great! She follows her dreams. And the music is sooooo good!
8. Sleeping Beauty - This was my favorite as a child. I loved Aurora. I thought she was so beautiful, kind, and had the prettiest voice I'd ever heard. Now that I'm older I see she's not particularly deep, but I do still love the amusing fairy antics. Phillip and the kings are fun. Maleficent is top tier evil villain. And the visuals are stunning! 😍 And personally the 'Once Upon A Dream' dance in the forest cannot be beat!!
7. Frozen - I got to see this movie the day after it came out, so the overhype hadn't exploded the world yet. I still love it! The visuals are beyond gorgeous. The characters are great. And the music is perfection! I somehow still adore 'Let It Go'!!
6. Emperor's New Groove - This movie is flawlessly funny! I die at the spectacular humor! Eyzma and Kronk are the BEST!!! It may not have the same emotional depth as others, but I always feel happy with this one.
5. Princess and the Frog - This one is SO MUCH FUN!!! I'm in love with the jazz music and New Orleans/bayou settings. I love how Naveen (favorite Disney prince) and Tiana grow with each other (also one of my favorite Disney couples). The shadow man is such a fun villain. Charlotte is the BEST!And I can just feel the heart in this show!!
4. Lilo and Stitch - This movie is a BLAST!! I love the quirky fun of the aliens and the sweet heart of the sisters growing and recovering from tragedy. The characters of Nani and Lilo just feel so real. Stitch is an adorable monster who really just wants love and family. Somehow they mashed such a chaotic idea into such a fun heartfelt story and it's just so freaking good!!
3. Mulan - I love Mulan. I don’t know what else to say. I'm not a big fan of the 'strong female character' being this girl that can do no wrong, that's just super strong, and it all comes so naturally to her. Mulan is lost. She's not sure where her place is, but one thing she knows is that she loves her family. She'll do anything for them. So she runs away to fight for her father. But it's difficult. She struggles and has to work harder than anyone else. She's a true strong character to me. I also love the side characters. They bring such life and fun. It’s just such a good story!
2. The Lion King - What’s been said about this movie has really already been said. It's a complete and utter masterpiece ❤️ The art, the music, the score, the characters, the story, the growth. There is nothing wrong with this movie. I love it sooooooo much!!!....and yet there's still one more.....
1. Treasure Planet - I was always the kid who loved a good adventure movie. I always adored movies like Atlantis or National Treasure and would watch them at nauseum. Treasure Planet was no exception. It was another fun adventure with an awesome captain who I thought was the absolute coolest. Then I rewatched it as an adult and fell far deeper in love. The score for this is epic!! I love the merging of the 3d and 2d, giving it a grander depth. Space and pirates are some of my favorite things generally, so combining them was solid gold for me 😜 But beyond that, the characters rip my heart out and send me soaring! Dr. Doppler is hilarious. Captain Amelia is still a queen. Morph is the most adorable sidekick and a great alien version of a parrot. But of course the stand out is Silver and Jim. Their relationship KILLS me. Jim's this lost kid who doesn't know where he's going in life and it's through a scallywag he gets that father figure he truly needed to guide and steady him. While Jim was the person Silver needed to soften him and help him see beyond himself and care for someone else. The heart is so good. The scene after Jim thinks it's his fault Arrow died and Silver's speech about believing in him, breaks me into pieces. I guess I'm a succor for a good father-son dynamic (another favorite of mine is Iroh and Zuko from Avatar the Last Airbender). It's just such a gorgeous story, aesthetic, and characters and their relationships. It's one of my favorite movies of ALL TIME!!!! ❤️🌌🏴☠️

I've never ranked The Little Mermaid high, it's not a bad movie, I would just prefer to watch many others. Similarly, I don't particularly like Snow White. Again, it's not bad necessarily, I just feel off watching it for some reason.
My favourite is Brother Bear, and the only reason I can think of is that somehow both Kenai and Koda have my vibe. I also love The Black Cauldron and Encanto, so my tastes are very varied.

I respectfully disagree with some of your placements when it comes to my list. You do have my respect for, despite its low placement, saying The Black Cauldron is overhated (and it's higher here than just about any lists I've seen other than my own). We share the same sentiments on Dumbo and The Fox and the Hound, and we have Ralph Breaks the Internet in the same spot on the list (though my list includes Wish above it), and I too only like the princess scenes in it. It makes it fun to watch those scenes even though I still FanonDiscontinuity the film. And, while I acknowledge that The Lion King is sacred, I actually have it SLIGHTLY lower than you (at number 8, only coz I like the other 7 more, for me they start having rewatch value at 22 and at 12 they get really fun for me.)
There were a few moments where I was shocked but I won't give you any hate. Personally I have The Three Caballeros the highest of the Wartime films, though still "below average" for me. The scenes with the Caballeros are pretty trippy and Roger Rabbit effect must have been pretty impressive for its time, considering how old the film is, long before Roger Rabbit or Space Jam. Though whoever made this was clearly on drugs, and Donald Duck clearly isn't at his best here (though he was worse in Roger Rabbit when he was racist to Daffy).

There are only three movies I consider "a chore to watch": Alice in Wonderland, Chicken Little, Meet The Robinsons. All the other movies (not including package movies) are decent till great.
I can see how those ones would feel like a chore to watch, even though I do like Alice in Wonderland quite a bit. The lack of a solid plot can make it difficult to get invested.

Tarzan is also my #1!! It’s such a beautifully complete story and the ONLY Disney animated feature to follow a protagonist from when they are a BABY baby to when they become an adult, at every stage in life. All others start in childhood or skip from baby to adult, never all stages.
Oliver and company is my favorete Disney movie.That and the great mouse detective.

I love Fantasia too (and its sequel), but you were kinda close to crossing a line by Chicken Little higher than #50.
I completely forgot the movie Dinosaur existed let alone that was a disney movie lol. it's a shame the trailer showed it as this grand epic movie, but we got was well pretty forgettable. Yeah its definitely at number 60 for me

My Top 10 Favorite Disney Films.
10. Pinocchio - This was my childhood and I still love it to this day, this is definitely one of the most intriguing films that ever came out during the beginning of Walt’s first animated films.
9. The Emperor’s New Groove - This is the funniest Disney movie I’ve ever seen out of all Disney films. Every scene provides rich comedy and each character is hilarious. I especially love Kuzco’s character development and the duo Kronk and Yzma is so funny.
8. Alice in Wonderland - I love this film for it’s absolute craziness, colorful animation and the characters.
7. Lilo & Stitch - Lilo is one of the Disney characters that I can possibly relate to and her sisterly relationship with Nani is so genuine. The action scenes and the humor is extremely executed.
6. The Little Mermaid - This film kicked off the Renaissance era with it’s great protagonist, amazing underwater animation, fun side characters, enjoyable musical sequences and a villain that is incredibly quintessential.
5. Fantasia - I was impressed with this film. The animation is visually stunning and the artistry that was put into this film is fantastic.
4. Beauty and the Beast - I used to hate this film for the first time but I loved it for it’s romantic sequences, amazing storytelling and great characters.
3. Aladdin - The plot elements in this film is perfect! I loved it for it’s humor, great action scenes, cast of enjoyable characters and catchy songs. It’s Pure Disney’s Magic.
2. Lady and the Tramp - The interactions between Lady and Tramp is extremely executed and it is beautifully animated.
1. Encanto - IMO This is the best Disney film. I enjoyed it because the characters were hilarious to watch but was also enjoyable and relatable. The character development is amazing, the animation is mesmerizing and it has the best lineup song in any Disney film. It really encapsulates what I love about Disney.

10. Make Mine Music - It's not really a bad film because I enjoyed some segments but it still doesn't impress me.
9. Pocahontas - The story is completely inaccurate with it's storytelling and the portrayal of the characters. The good parts was the animation and the songs.
8. Oliver & Company - People are gonna hate me for this but I don't like this film. I really hated almost all of the characters and the animation is super bland.
7. Fantasia 2000 - It will never beat the original Fantasia movie.
6. The Black Cauldron - Despite it's underrated villain, great animation, the dark tone, the score and the magic. Both of the characters Eilonwy and Flluender doesn't provide any purpose to the film and Gurgi was so annoying.
5. Dinosaur - The score and the action scenes are executed but it has annoying characters and it's super forgettable.
4. Melody Time - I didn't enjoyed it and there's nothing more to say.
3. The Sword in the Stone - It is barely watchable and was completely bored when I first watched it for the first time. There is no character development and the protagonist is super bland.
2. Home on the Range - The characters really irritated me and it is not enjoyable to watch.
1. Chicken Little - The worst Disney film ever, every character is so bad, awful writing and the animation is horrible. I despise it.

It's kinda shocking that Fantasia at really low but I understand why you put it very low and that's ok because it's your opinion.
When I first watched Fantasia, I was extremely bored and didn't really pay attention to what was happening but when I rewatched it two times. I realize why it was considered one of the best Disney films ever made.
The Little Mermaid is my number 1 too
I would change the movie Moana and the main character would be a boy named Manu. The title would be the same as the main character’s name. Moana would still exist but as a second main character and Manu’s love interest.
Pretty hot take for some, but I think the Prince of Egypt is better than every Disney movie.

How FROZEN 2 is place better than............Treasure Planet, Wreck it Ralph, Beauty and the Beast, Hunchback of Notre Dame, FROZEN 1(seriously!!), Encanto, Bolt, Tarzan, BH6, Lilo and Stich, Pinocchio? I going to stop there because I literally would place Frozen 2 very down in the BOTTOM of how disappointing of a non existing plot, boring characters, boring settings, pretty much just 2 good songs, and one of the most boring endings in the canon of Disney......I know your taste, your opinion, but I just can't take seen such a nothing film top so many amazing classics and master pieces like Beauty and The Beast or Tarzan or Ralph 1 and Treasure Planet, just for respect alone this one don't deserve be any close to near a top 20 less closer to the top 10 of any kinda or list.

Everything I think the treasure planet movie underrated
The little mermaid ❤️ This movie has been a big part of my life since I was seeing it on the cinema when it was new, as a little girl myself. However Aristocats is another all time favorite Disney movie. It was funny to see how much similar but still so different taste we had. Thanks for this list. Will definitely look up Bolt.

Oke...I understand that everyone has their own opinion but wow. I was pretty shocked where u put Lilo & Stitch, but to put Pocahontas before Beauty & the Beast really blew my mind. Literally everybody I ever heard talk about Disney movies doesn't like Pocahontas at all or not that much. Still it's ur opinion, so I totally respect that and I don't want to send out any hate. It just totally shocked/surprised me.
Yeah, I wouldn't put Pocahontas above Beauty and the Beast, but it's still a masterpiece.
I'm tired of Disney fans who are trying to get some excuses for Hating Disney's Dinosaur for no reason plus I hate how they hate it and they haven't seen it yet

I have seen Dinosaur and listed my reasons for not liking it, but it’s based purely on my personal taste. Sorry to disturb you but my opinion doesn’t mean it’s an objectively bad movie or anything. You and many others are still totally free to like it.
Encanto ranks too low for my taste -- but then, female representation means a lot to me personally, and this film is the best in the canon for that -- but I LOVE seeing Tangled ranked so high! I agree, Flynn and Rapunzel's romance is the best developed, and therefore the most effective, of any Disney romance.
The female characters in Encanto are great!
I'd argue Sleeping Beauty actually has the best female representation in the canon.

It seems to me it's very much a product of a time when women in fantasy fiction could either be an all-powerful, pure evil Villain (Maleficent) or a passive, helpless Damsel (Aurora), and all other options, particularly that of Hero, were closed to them. I will give the movie credit for being probably the earliest example of female friendship in a Disney film, with the three dotty but likable good fairies, but beyond that, it's not really the kind of representation that I, personally, enjoy seeing. I much prefer situations more like Avatar: The Last Airbender. in which a powerful, diabolical villain (Azula) is challenged by, among others, two flawed but determined heroines (Toph, Katara).
@@kelleyceccato7025 You're completely ignoring the 3 literal protagonists of the movie, Flora, Fauna, and Merriweather. 5 of the 6 most important characters in the movie are female, and all far more complex than you're giving them credit for. And, as a bonus, they're diverse in age and personality type. Like, dotty and written off just because they're zany and old? That just betrays an internal misogyny/ageism in yourself. They're all three incredibly strong, funny, heroic older women. You're writing them off for no good reason. So you prefer NOT to see older women given heroic lead roles? Sounds a bit regressive on your end, quite frankly.
@@kelleyceccato7025 I'd just say basicaly that the only difference between the three good fairies and the characters you mentioned is that they're older. Other than that, despite some physical help from Philip at the end, they drive the entire plot with their action, cunning, and bravery, their flaws causing trouble that they themselves the have to clean up. I urge you to watch the movie again with the three good fairies as the protagonist of the film in your mind from the get go. Watch it from their perspective and actually give them the credit they deserve, especially the three incredible voice actresses, Barbara, Barbara, and Verna.

I know I have a soft spot for Rescuers and Black Cauldron because I liked their source materials, heh.
I much prefer the animation and music in Pocahontas, which puts it far ahead, even if the plot isn't amazing. The Aristocats bores me and I don't think it looks good. Just different taste!
@@thetroveyoutube Your opinion on The Aristocats is not uncommon (just one I disagree with), but your thoughts on Pocahontas confuse me. Even ignoring the problematic historical elements I always thought it rather dull and the music is really… really boring. Maybe you prefer slower music, but I like a more upbeat song personally, and honestly Pocahontas just fails to deliver anything for me. On the other hand, I grew up with The Aristocats, and I love nearly every second of it. I love Duchess and O’Malley, I love Napoleon and Lafayette, Edgar is a fun villain (and fun to make fun of), and Marie’s been my favorite character for a long time. I just find it highly enjoyable.
@@hickorydaisy4117 I'd argue that Colors of the Wind and Just Around the Riverbend aren't boring, and the score is stunning, but I can understand your critiques for Pocahontas overall. I totally get that it has many flaws and isn't too popular with the majority of Disney fans. There's not much else to say except we simply have different taste haha and that's cool! Nostalgia also plays a huge role. I'm glad you like The Aristocats, I wish I did. Cats are great.

Chicken Little is one of my least favorite Disney movies. I used to like it as a kid, but now I dislike it as an adult.
