The game was manufactured using two different revisions of the DSP-1 chip. If your cartridge has a newer version, or your emulator implements the newer version, during the demos the plane will crash into the ground.
One of my friends had this game. As a kid, we were never good at it. We just got the password for the final level from another friend (who likey got it from Nintendo Power) and used that to play whatever level we wanted. Didn't matter if we sucked at it, we had fun.
One of the best flight simulators I've ever played. Still plays extremely well. The original Japanese names of the flight instructors were Fumiya Tanaka (Tony), Ran Shirashi (Shirley), Indy Scott (Lance), and Doubei Kuroda (Big Al).
Do you know if the Japanese version gives any more context to what’s going on with the final missions, or the ending? Given the uniforms and everything, I wouldn’t be surprised if this were actually some sort of endorsement for the JSDF…
@@JFJD your correct in your assumption in the original japanese version during the credits theres a text crawl (ommited from the international release) saying the events of the game was actually a secret military test to find candidates for special forces

A $500,000 tax free military funded contract can raise a brow or two from a qualified civilian rotary wing pilot. 🙂 A qualified contractor pilot technically isn't joining the military, but rather supporting them. Current mid-east operations use some American, British, Czech, Polish, and Russian contracted pilots, although mainly for transport, and would never fly a military airframe (much less an armed one) unless given extremely rare-case permission to do so, and even then, they'd have to be prior military service / activated contracted veterans most likely.

It´s crazy what that game means to me. In Brazil, year 1993, I´d "rent" this game same way we did with VHS tapes at blockbuster. We´d have it for the weekend and it was my very first flight simulator. I got my pilot´s license and till this day I have both MSFS and pilotwings running on my computer. Truly a life changing game! I think what helps is it's easy to learn, hard to master. The point system is pretty fair and objective and challenges you to do better. The play control works really well and the levels get progressively harder but you don't have to be perfect. It's a very well made game.

I never played Pilotwings on the SNES, but when we got a N64 my mom rented Pilotwings 64 for us and we had a blast with it. I remembered it so fondly that later on, I got Pilotwings Resort on the 3DS and it was a hoot, too. Thanks, Mom :D
I have a similar story, I never played Pilotwings either, but instead of getting it on the N64 my mother abandoned me on a doorstep and they had to rush me to the hospital. You might be my long lost brother.
Oh wow! This is where my love for aviation started. 8-10 yrs old playing this, already hit up blockbuster, and it's friday night with a pizza on the way and cinnamon toast crunch and Saturday morning cartoons when i wake up from my night in my living room fort. Life is good.
this hit me hard! healing my inner child experience. 2024 anyone? :) i soooo love the OST of this game, the piano/jazz vibe is really calming and relaxing now! :D
I almost dislocated my neck when i saw this while scrolling lol. The original Pilot Wings on SNES was basically a tech demo...and even more so on the N64. And at 40 years old, id still happily lose MANY hours playing either right now
31 years ago, I was a child, sitting in the living room, enjoying watching my bro play this. Gosh...happy memories! Never got good at this version of it, but absolutely adored Super Mario World. So many fond memories.
I still remember how the game and system smelled when I got this for Christmas so many years ago. What an optimistic time that was for gaming and for what the future would bring. Thanks for the nostalgia hit. Like a lot of other people here, I played this all the time, but never got good at it. Loved both this and Pilotwings 64. Spent so much time in 64 just flying the gyrocopter around in the little America map.

Pilotwings would've impressed at any point in the SNES's life, but as a launch title? 🤯
I ❤ flying the hang-gliding mission's. I LIKED the whole 🎮 in General 👍🏼🛩🌅😅
