    Another great video. I like the concept. A real wood fired brick oven has a wide aperture through which to launch the pizza. Since the fire is usually 90 degrees to the pizza, one can easily visualize the cook. A turning peel can easily be inserted with enough lateral space to rotate the pizza. In the modern portable steel ovens, the heat source is usually in the back and the pizza takes the entire width of the stone floor. So one is left to launch and retrieve the pizza straight in and straight out. Many people actually take the pizza out of the oven to turn the dough. Why strive for a 700 to 850 oven temperature if one is going to cool it for 5 seconds every 20 seconds. A turning stone is the perfect way to slightly shift the pizza just to check the edge cook and selectively turn it to whatever side needs a little more heat.
    Unfortunately on this date, the eBay seller no longer is making the kit. I have tracked down a full size machined "lazy susan" style ring bearing. It should be much more stable since it is at the edges of the stone vs the center. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks again.

    • @TomVoyageuk
      @TomVoyageuk  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment, I agree I loved the concept and if it were a more sturdy unit it would make it a nice little feature, but I like learning to use the turning peel too, it’s just a bit hard with Ooni’s as they’re quite small and not much room to fit in the peel!

    • @SilverShadow2LWB
      @SilverShadow2LWB 11 місяців тому

      @@ronwilhelm2467 Sorry Ron. Most of the rotating rings use stamped sheet metal as a bearing retainer and do not tolerate the intense heat without warping a little. I've gone over to a central bronze bushing with central post. Unfortunately, it does require a 3/4" hole to be cut out of the central floor of the oven. It does not affect the performance of the oven at all. One can easily put back in the original square pizza stone whenever one wanted to. Traveling is simpler with the standard square stone for my rotating stone does require a mains connection.

    This rotating device should have been built in as standard, with a handle to turn it. I have only used the same Ooni shown here 5 times and it takes some getting used to, it's a fiddle and in my opinion you get too much harsh wood smoke taste in comparison with a big heavy standard pizza oven... but then I am a pizza snob.

    • @TomVoyageuk
      @TomVoyageuk  3 роки тому +2

      If you’re getting a harsh smoke flavour, you may be putting the pizza on too early. Often when you put wood on it will give of some nasty thick white smoke for a couple of minutes before it properly catches fire and gives of a nice hot flame. I usually wait until the smoke is a clear blue colour, that’s when you know it’s ready. Also make sure you’re wood is seasoned and dry. 👍

      With regards to the Fyra, i have actually never cooked on one. My fired has one which i want to borrow soon to test and review, but i know from what he said there are a couple of tips to help you get the temps hot....
      Make sure the oven is facing the direction the wood is blowing, meaning the wind will pass through the back of the oven and up through the chimney, providing good airflow for the pellets. Also, use a blow torch to light up the pellets, and leave them longer than you may think to get the oven really good and hot before cooking on.

The other issue is non of those methods can achieve a consistent flame rolling over the pizza to cook the toppings. So yes it is cheaper, but the results aren't as good,

The pizza in an Ooni oven takes less than 90 seconds to be done. It takes more time to set up the rotator than rotate the pizza manually with a pizza peel.

    Love the effort of the video, but this does not look like a quality product, at all.

    Not sure this is really solving a problem that actually needed solving! Seems to create more issues than it actually resolves! Also, very expensive for what it actually is! Agree with your comments re ball bearings, and needs some re-design. OONI have been asked about a revolving turntable, and I don't think it is something they are considering. Certainly would not be cutting holes in a product that does the job well without this add-on!! On another channel, an OONI head of engineering discusses this very issue: ua-cam.com/video/fawK7mO6PAY/v-deo.html

      Thanks for watching my video, and thanks for leaving a comment. I think it depends on how easy you find it to take the pizza in and out and give it a turn by hand. This unit is cheaper than the turing peel by ooni, but id agree its not an issue for everyone. The creators of these type of products are constantly looking for ways to improve their products, and hopefully be testing them out we can help them in the research and development. But as for the ball bearings..... yes a fix if definitely required. :)

    Great idea just poor design.

      @@TomVoyageuk it's a very simple combination between microcontroller an open source softare. So you could create an automatic turning mechanism.
