Ive always been curious as to what became of the architectural salvage (beams/floor joists) that were replaced with steel during the 1953/54 stabilization ?

We have all the original joists that were removed during the Grigg-era stabilization. They are in our architectural artifact collection, which contains just about everything that has had to be removed.

Excellent presentation! I do have a question regarding the HVAC systems. Obviously, Jefferson had neither central heating nor air conditioning, but I imagine climate control is necessary now both for the comfort of visitors and for the conservation of the furnishings and fittings. You must also have modern fire suppression systems, alarms, etc. In these respects, the contemporary experience is very different from that of Jefferson's time. How do you handle it? Are any of the components of these systems visible? Is the issue addressed in any way by docents?

Great question! The modern systems are as hidden as possible and were installed with the least disturbance of original material possible. The HVAC supply and returns are often hidden in fireplaces, and the ductwork runs through the attics. We have a mist fire suppression system that is installed in the ceilings and is visible to the discerning eye.
