Literally saw the daughter grow from at kid in elementary school to a college student. Small shops are the backbone of NYC.

Shoutout to GS Socks and Belts on 14 St. He has been there since 1990 after moving from Senegal, Africa. Well known and loved by many. He used to sell tapes of music, now he sells them socks, hats, shirts etc. His store is the size of a closet, due to high rent and his store is being PHYSICALLY CUT IN HALF!! Safe NYC!!!!!
Jacks 99 cent store on 32nd and 6th Street was a BIG department store. The one on 40th street is still there and going strong but the original 32nd street location was a big staple. So sad to see it gone.

Not only Amazon but downloaded music online, which most of the record stores, including mega stores like Virgin and Tower Records, closed down because of it. Toys stores, free newspaper and phone books are also gone because of the internet.

Trash N Valdville was one of the stores that is similar to Search and Destroy. Kim's videos used to have two floors: VHS, DVDs and CDs. They once have a comic book store. Small but it look adventurous. And is they only street in St.Mark that has numerous record stores Today, Pffft, now it's filled with import restaurants and lounges.. I mean the place was a wonderland for young punks like me but that all changed😢
This has been happening in cities all over the country. Commercial rent is crazy high, people want to buy cheap crap at all costs, and people don't see the value in niche places (corporate businesses target the most common denoninator which leads to bland, cookie cutter stores).
Everyone is obsessed with Amazon. Every online purchase helps to diminish independent wealth. Every time we order from Amazon we help to reverse distribution of wealth. It’s now heavily concentrated to Amazon. No one sees we are all paying the price.
Maybe because small shops do not offer a 401K plan or health care coverage to any employees...why work at one for minimum wage and get no benefits at all?
