For anyone using GIMP 2.9 or 2.10 and thinking this doesn't work. It does. You just now need to select "Drop Shadow (legacy)". It's also under "Filters/Light and Shadow". It seems they changed the way Drop Shadow works and the new DS will not put a shadow on the inside of a selection. Thankfully the old method is still available, now marked as "legacy". Hope this helps someone.
Thank you Nick, this video is definitely one of the easiest tutorial for wood carving. You're using the layer option. you won't see this very often in a tutorial and that's why i like it.
Man, love your videos. A week ago I started watching and actually ended making a logo for a group I belong to. Hoping to make it into a t-shirt soon. One thing I would like to see you do is a website mockup either in gimp or Inkscape, which is why I found your channel. Thanks for the awesome tutorials and success to you good man.
Thank you so much. I was trying to find a way to change my banner for my channel and was actually looking up how to do a wood burn effect when I found this video. I used your tutorial and LOVE my banner now.
Yet another great tutorial. Thank you for all the work you put into these! It would be great to see some GIMP Explained videos (same as you did with Inkscape)
I've learned an incredible amount thanks to you... I appreciate that you're willing to share your knowledge with everyone that wants to learn Gimp. However, I find myself stuck often (and still stuck on this tutorial) likely due to the updates in Gimp between the date that this video was made and currently. For example, the "Drop Shadow" dialog is very different --- just for starters. Is there any online documentation that I can look at that can explain these changes/updates so that I may finally be able to follow older tutorials?
In gimp 2.10.6 there is a new drop shadow filter that works different: i cannot apply drop shadow bellow selections, it must be with a new layer with the inverted shape. I know that the legacy filter is still available, don't know how long, but you could create a review of this effect using the new filter? It may help us to adapt to the new drop shadow
Nick, brilliant! Will check out your "Carved Wood" Inkscape too. A picture is worth a thousand words in this part of the world when trying to explain things. West
Great stuff! I wish at some point you'd make a tutorial for an imaginary festival poster in Inkscape. Similar to what google image search finds with "festival vector poster" but simplistic enough to fit in a tutorial!
I love your vids. But one criticism here if you don't mind. The shadows of the wood carving do make the drop-down more natural, but overall, you can notice that it is a fake image, because all the objects do not have the same shadow intensity or direction (here: the bowl). The bowl's shadow goes in the opposite direction. When you (anyone reading this comment) create shadows or any other lighting effects, make sure they all follow the same direction, focal point and intensity. That's all :)
how did you get your screen to look like that? Is it the computer software or a program that makes it so that your icons like chrome and documents are on the side?
Great Tutorial as always! Could you please make an Inkscape tutorial on how to make an object have a gloss effect. Like chrome but colored. Would be very nice!
Hi nick! great video as always! however I gotta question at the part of filters-drop shadow settings, I noticed the moment you set that it automatically adds another layer, but while I was doing the same thing nothing much happened to my logo. I’m using Gimp 2.10 by the way
Oh I forgot to tell that the wallpaper I was using is the photo that I took same as wood board with a lighter exposure though, maybe that affected the drop shadow setting?
Man im following your videos and its like you own GIMP Bro!! Good Job and best tutorial on gimp comes from Just you... I have a question though , when ever i apply the shadow filter it does nothing on my part... how come
I would try using the legacy drop shadow filter. I think I had a similar problem when I tried using the newer one. GIMP has released major updates since I made this video.
I have used this tutorial several times. But since updating to Gimp 2.10 it doesn't work anymore. Also not by using Drop Shadow (legacy). Can't seem to figure out why. I have followed every step, even used the same pictures as in the video. Still no success.
@Try Fox There's another video by Logos By Nick called "Pressed Leather Effect". This works for me and you can apply that also to other material like wood or stone. Try it out.
great video but it would be nice if you explained a little more about what you are doing as you are doing it. I am a beginner so maybe your video isnt meant for me. I can replicate your process but dont have a very good understanding of what it is I am actually doing. What is alpha to selection?
thanks for the guide, had to play around with the drop shadow a little since there was a lot more negative space in my image but i think it turned out nicely: i.imgur.com/yDCmnzb.jpg

Till now, I haven't used GIMP in so much advanced way. Without these videos, I couldn't have even known the true potential of GIMP.
Thank you Nick,

I Love Your Tutorials!!
wow.. that was really amazing
Amazing tutorial, straight to the point. Thanks .
Wow! Thought it was going to be more difficult than that. Thank you so much!
I subscribed because you're using Linux and helping us get out of Adobe's monopoly.
THIS IS AWESOME MY FRIEND!
On the alpha to selection, is that because the logo image is png? Must be since it came in with a transparent background.
Thanks Nick!
Much appreciated Nick!

You are the best, learn from you from 2015
Thanks a lot. Superb! Best of luck.

WOW! that's awesome

how did you get your screen to look like that? Is it the computer software or a program that makes it so that your icons like chrome and documents are on the side?
It's the operating system I'm using - Ubuntu with the Vertex Dark theme and Numix Circle icon pack
Thanks this was really useful

@@LogosByNick Thats what i used script fu shadow legacy, but not the same result i have gimp 2.10.12
I also own a ubuntu I'd like to ask you what you are shooting through
It's called Record My Desktop. All of the info about how I create these videos is in the description section of the video
I would like your opinion, Nick...would this effect be easier in Inkscape? And by the way, good video.
No it's much easier in GIMP
thank you!!!!

it doesnt work for me tho the text keeps dissappearing
can I do this with letters too?
Yes we can (you can basically do it with any path)
I have used this tutorial several times. But since updating to Gimp 2.10 it doesn't work anymore. Also not by using Drop Shadow (legacy). Can't seem to figure out why. I have followed every step, even used the same pictures as in the video. Still no success.

Could you share your drop shadow settings? Because I have something similar and can't get the shadow working. 😒
how do you get Gimp?
gimp.org and look for the download link
At the start of the video, you can see the RecordMyDesktop window. Anyway, good video :3
