Hi. I'm from Finland and I have to say I'm fascinated of the stories on your channel. The dedication and professionalism is just amazing. It's also interesting but same time heart braking to hear what the fighting and being in a war does to people. We have a conscript army with decent training and gear but not the experience you guys have. But then again, we don't fight wars around the globe. Finland has more than decent training - Finnish (and Swedish) conscripts regularly outperform professional troops from other countries according to tactical evaluations from NATO-and-allied exercises.

Ericks story is truly guiding the rest of my military career. Thank you sarnt major for all you’ve done on and off record. I’ve wanted to go to Group as an intel guy for a couple years and I’m finally getting the shot and just like him I had some rough formative years that instilled in me that even though I fought death, clearly I won because I’m still here and kicking. I don’t want to have any regrets when the time comes to retire.

I'm not a U.S citizen, however, I have a huge interest in spec ops and I especially find the Unit guys intriguing, not to mention extremely and undoubtedly talented dudes. Great Interview and Story! Thank you Erick for your service to our nation and sharing your story with us. I myself am a vet with certain struggles. You statement about "vulnerability of strength" will be a game changer for me as I heal through therapy and continue to be introspective. That single phrase now describes what went wrong. I hope many other vets and civilians struggling with TBI, PTSD, and mental health problems will read this comment and think about that statement and what it means.
Glad to hear that the phase provides you comfort and hope. Thank you for your service! There should only be strength in what veterans had to and still working through in the service of their county. We CAN and WILL heal and come out stronger as humans from TBIs, PTS, and mental health "fogginess" (for lack of medical terms). TBIs leave somewhat permanent damage/scars in our brains with cognitive impacts. Thanks to the amazing team at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICOE) I not only learned about TBIs and cognitive bandwidth ... or loss off, but how to heal and strengthen my mind - my brain. PTS and mental health, which many are leaving out Disorder and Problems... and just focusing on how to heal and grow from them. It is absolutely doable - the human mind and body are amazing and can heal. Again, thank you my friend. Please take care and chip away at it every single day. Compartmentalization, can be a horrible two edged sword. I had desired SFAS and realize that my MI sergeant in Panama, was seeing if I could fill a niche. This patriot took the steps I couldn't. USMC will not take ANYONE if they come from prior service. They make Marines. However if you want to stay in USMC and get promoted or do specialized work its much less in budget and size so its very competitive and harder to grow. Fantastic place for young Infantry they instil a-lot of discipline esp when it comes to personal fitness.
@@michaelbryant8757 you are wrong. The Marine Corps DOES take prior service. We had a Sailor and Airman in my SOI class. The Marine Corps used to instill discipline. it’s the worst organization in the DoD now, so it fails at that now. It kills its own members. Look at the recent retainment efforts. It’s recognizing a problem because it’s a horrible place.
Holy s@$t. I think I'm the guy who coordinated his evac from Ecuador. I was based in Panama, Colombia and then Bolivia. I was working 3 straight days and slept in offices until the guy got to Texas.
@toad man.....the best advice I can give would be to pass the class, but don't stop learning. Don't train to "the standard", train to proficiency. Be the best damn medic you can, because ultimately someone's life is going to be in your hands. Don't take anything lightly. I've had to take care of everything from testicular varicose veins, to a bulging eyeball, to gonnherea of a colostomy. Medicine is constantly evolving, so don't ever stop learning. If you have any trouble at all please feel free to comment here and I'll give you my personal email and I'll do what I can to help.

Wow!!! One cannot even begin to understand how intense this dudes life has been. Jason Bourne couldnt wear Erik's shoes. I’m not sure you meant it this way but Just to be clear for everyone else he is not from “The Unit” aka CAG/Delta. He is TFO/ISA which is another tier 1 unit inside JSOC.
@@Grappler2502 Yeah, anybody who can read between the lines and has knowledge of the JSOC SMU's figures that out, but I don't think those of us who figured that out should be mentioning that unit if Erick is/was deliberately avoiding naming it. We should respect his decision not to name the unit, and help keep it as secretive a unit as it is.

I know you mostly interview Warriors but I would love to see Holly McKay on the show. Holly was recently in Afghanistan during the withdraw of the USA military troops and stayed after the Withdraw to ask questions and report on what the Taliban is doing when the cameras are off and they don't have eyes on them. Wow, the Marine Corps ethos is strong. SGM. Miyares is not the first SOF warrior, who was first a Marine, say that they always considered themselves a Marine throughout their careers, even after having transitioned from the Corps. Once a Marine, always a Marine.
Don't care how much love he has for the Marine Corps. He left it and did far more in the Army for over a decade. If I were to have transferred to the Marines, I'm not dropping my love for the Army when it was the Army that instilled in me honor, courage, etc.
Step father was Vietnam marine 68-69 he still doesn't say much. Believe rifleman then squad radio somewhere in there grenadier with a 45. Ended company radioman. He won't go to the VA or legion just doesn't want to talk about it. He has two purple hearts when he married my mother few months later car backfired and he hit the deck in the middle of the street. He got up and apologized and I never really asked him questions about it. He's 75 now and disabled still doesn't talk about it.
He mentioned near the end that his friends mentioned that staying in the service longer instead of retiring would have cost him money, curious why. Any explanations are thankful
Good question and opportunity to clarify. Basically because i had been eligible for military at 20 years of service, and at the point of the conversation I was at roughly 28 years of service. I retired at 29 1/2 years - and yes could have gone till 30 years, but at the end it wasn’t worth the few more dollars in retirement pay. I would be taking time away from my family - time that is priceless. Many service members join for a cause and purpose - however after a certain period in their careers it becomes “expensive “ to serve. The mental and physical toll on service members life is high, and cost of time away from family can never be repaid. There becomes a point in a service member’s career that being in the military comes at to great of a cost - personally and professionally. Many of us stay “longer” just because it is all we we believe we do in life … this thought process hurts their family and them. So sometimes quality of life and financial progress for the family becomes priority. Hope that helps.

Many think they know spanish until you take the language test and end up failing. Lol it was hard for me and i spoke Spanish my whole life but managed to pass.
I remember going law enforcement and having all the branches there. The couple of Marines in class were brainwashed in boot that they we’re awesome. Lol. We had one Sheriff non military. I was Army and graduated 1st. The civilian got 2nd. The Infantry Marine and contractor failed out lol. Army got the top 5 except for the one Sheriff from Maine.

Many of us have suffered p t s d 😅 We HAVE TO rise above it BUT look at it from this [Point of view] Everyone who has served in a combat zone. Has a HUGE circuit breaker (psychologically) exhaustion can make it trip ! Emotion not processed can make them snap ! Stress pushing them to a point of no return ! I have never seen that patch, arrow head with two pistols and a star. Can someone explain to me what patch that is. I know delta patch is red with a sword down the middle.
This patch was designed by a good friend of mine that I worked with for a long time in the unit I came from. He is an artist - and I asked him to capture for me the elements of what I was developing at the time to become my platform focused on preventing Veteran (service members) suicide. The outline is of the United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) arrow and the inside are the components of the Army Sergeant Major (E9) rank. The outline represents my time in Special Operations and the rank is my (and others) responsibility as leaders to take care of our people and lead efforts such as those I am embarking on. The two 1911 presents several things to me: 1 pistol = 2a and 2 pistol = using firearms in battle. But most perfect significance -> represents my two friends that committed suicide based on invisible wounds. Thanks for the question and opportunity to provide an explanation of its significance.

USMC will not take ANYONE if they come from prior service. They make Marines. However if you want to stay in USMC and get promoted or do specialized work its much less in budget and size so its very competitive and harder to grow.
Fantastic place for young Infantry they instil a-lot of discipline esp when it comes to personal fitness.

@@michaelbryant8757 you are wrong. The Marine Corps DOES take prior service. We had a Sailor and Airman in my SOI class. The Marine Corps used to instill discipline. it’s the worst organization in the DoD now, so it fails at that now. It kills its own members. Look at the recent retainment efforts. It’s recognizing a problem because it’s a horrible place.

Holy s@$t. I think I'm the guy who coordinated his evac from Ecuador. I was based in Panama, Colombia and then Bolivia. I was working 3 straight days and slept in offices until the guy got to Texas.

@toad man.....the best advice I can give would be to pass the class, but don't stop learning. Don't train to "the standard", train to proficiency. Be the best damn medic you can, because ultimately someone's life is going to be in your hands. Don't take anything lightly. I've had to take care of everything from testicular varicose veins, to a bulging eyeball, to gonnherea of a colostomy. Medicine is constantly evolving, so don't ever stop learning. If you have any trouble at all please feel free to comment here and I'll give you my personal email and I'll do what I can to help.

I will definitely be taking this job seriously and will not take average for my title. I am aiming for exceptional and will further my education every chance I get. I’m not sure you meant it this way but Just to be clear for everyone else he is not from “The Unit” aka CAG/Delta. He is TFO/ISA which is another tier 1 unit inside JSOC.
@@Grappler2502 Yeah, anybody who can read between the lines and has knowledge of the JSOC SMU's figures that out, but I don't think those of us who figured that out should be mentioning that unit if Erick is/was deliberately avoiding naming it. We should respect his decision not to name the unit, and help keep it as secretive a unit as it is.

I know you mostly interview Warriors but I would love to see Holly McKay on the show. Holly was recently in Afghanistan during the withdraw of the USA military troops and stayed after the Withdraw to ask questions and report on what the Taliban is doing when the cameras are off and they don't have eyes on them. Wow, the Marine Corps ethos is strong. SGM. Miyares is not the first SOF warrior, who was first a Marine, say that they always considered themselves a Marine throughout their careers, even after having transitioned from the Corps. Once a Marine, always a Marine.

Step father was Vietnam marine 68-69 he still doesn't say much. Believe rifleman then squad radio somewhere in there grenadier with a 45. Ended company radioman. He won't go to the VA or legion just doesn't want to talk about it. He has two purple hearts when he married my mother few months later car backfired and he hit the deck in the middle of the street. He got up and apologized and I never really asked him questions about it. He's 75 now and disabled still doesn't talk about it.
He mentioned near the end that his friends mentioned that staying in the service longer instead of retiring would have cost him money, curious why. Any explanations are thankful
Good question and opportunity to clarify. Basically because i had been eligible for military at 20 years of service, and at the point of the conversation I was at roughly 28 years of service.
I retired at 29 1/2 years - and yes could have gone till 30 years, but at the end it wasn’t worth the few more dollars in retirement pay. I would be taking time away from my family - time that is priceless.
Many service members join for a cause and purpose - however after a certain period in their careers it becomes “expensive “ to serve. The mental and physical toll on service members life is high, and cost of time away from family can never be repaid. There becomes a point in a service member’s career that being in the military comes at to great of a cost - personally and professionally.
Many of us stay “longer” just because it is all we we believe we do in life … this thought process hurts their family and them.
So sometimes quality of life and financial progress for the family becomes priority. Hope that helps.

I remember going law enforcement and having all the branches there. The couple of Marines in class were brainwashed in boot that they we’re awesome. Lol. We had one Sheriff non military. I was Army and graduated 1st. The civilian got 2nd. The Infantry Marine and contractor failed out lol. Army got the top 5 except for the one Sheriff from Maine.

Many of us have suffered p t s d 😅 We HAVE TO rise above it BUT look at it from this [Point of view] Everyone who has served in a combat zone. Has a HUGE circuit breaker (psychologically) exhaustion can make it trip ! Emotion not processed can make them snap ! Stress pushing them to a point of no return ! I have never seen that patch, arrow head with two pistols and a star. Can someone explain to me what patch that is. I know delta patch is red with a sword down the middle.
This patch was designed by a good friend of mine that I worked with for a long time in the unit I came from.
He is an artist - and I asked him to capture for me the elements of what I was developing at the time to become my platform focused on preventing Veteran (service members) suicide.
The outline is of the United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) arrow and the inside are the components of the Army Sergeant Major (E9) rank.
The outline represents my time in Special Operations and the rank is my (and others) responsibility as leaders to take care of our people and lead efforts such as those I am embarking on.
The two 1911 presents several things to me: 1 pistol = 2a and 2 pistol = using firearms in battle. But most perfect significance -> represents my two friends that committed suicide based on invisible wounds.
