  • "Music is greater than us--it plays us." -Emmanuel Pahud
Emmanuel Pahud is a celebrated soloist, chamber musician, and principal flautist at the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Now 50, he shares anecdotes from his musical career - from “winning” his first instrument at 5, to realizing at 15 that the flute was “for life” - a life as one of today's most sought-after musicians.
His reflections include two historic, deeply personal portraits: of legendary violinist Ivry Gitlis, and of Berlin. What made the 22-year-old leave Celibidache, move to post-Wall Berlin, and be part of its rejuvenation and transformation are no less than a glimpse into European cultural history.

Not only a unique flute player, probably the best in the world but also a unique personality. All musicians should listen to this interview not only the flute players! Every word is interesting like every note he plays is a jewel. Thanks for this interview.
    Best regards, Ab Koster

What an outstanding interview. This should be required watching for anyone who aspires to a career in the classical field. It is crucial to civilization that we never lose our sense of the importance of classical music for the refinement of mind and expression of the very best of our spirits. Pahud is a shining example of what is highest and best in the musical arts.

As a clarinetist I'd go as far to say that he's the greatest wind player in recorded history, if not the greatest performer of any instrument period. Everything is so perfect, yet human and powerful.

and his ability to perform so incredibly, across so many different styles truly sets him apart for me.

Definitely the greatest classical wind player (alongside Joseph Alessi, same tier), difficult to make the claim that he’s the greatest performer of any instrument but it’s not an unreasonable argument

i am probably weird to say this, but i am very glad that he actually pronounced his full name, so that i can finally know how his surname is pronounced. the record companies in my country all translated his surname in german pronunciation (paa-hoo-du) on the record, and even the public mass media such as radio and tv all calls him in german way. (they probably assumed that because he is in berlin phil) but as far as i knew, he comes from french-swiss background, so i always wondered if the companies made honest mistake or is actually the case. now i am at peace to know the truth...🤣🤣
    merci beaucoup M.pahud!😍

Mister Pahud is perhaps the most culturally connected person who plays a classical instrument. He lived in several major cities before he was 10: in Paris, Madrid, Rome and Brussels. His father worked for a US company, and the family moved repeatedly during his childhood. This shaped his international outlook

I was a huge Rampal fan, never a Galway fan. But I think Pahud is better than both. The depth of his lower register is stunning. Rich, deep and sensuous. His articulation is perfect.
