Arc welding is a welding process that is used to join metal to metal by using electricity to create enough heat to melt metal, and the melted metals when cool result in a binding of the metals. It is a type of welding that uses a welding power supply to create an electric arc between a metal stick ("electrode") and the base material to melt the metals at the point of contact. Arc welders can use either direct (DC) or alternating (AC) current, and consumable or non-consumable electrodes.
The welding area is usually protected by some type of shielding gas, vapor, or slag. Arc welding processes may be manual, semi-automatic, or fully automated. First developed in the late part of the 19th century, arc welding became commercially important in shipbuilding during the Second World War. Today it remains an important process for the fabrication of steel structures and vehicles.
What is the basic principle of arc welding?
Arc welding is a welding process, in which heat is generated by an electric arc struck between an electrode and the work piece. Electric arc is luminous electrical discharge between two electrodes through ionized gas
Why is welding so bright?
The radiation comes from oscillating electrons (regardless of whether there is an electric current). Welding reaches temperatures high enough to cause significant emission of UV light. Oxyacetylene and oxyhydrogen flames can both be over 3000 C degrees and therefore can produce hazardous amounts of UV light
Does welding ruin your eyes?
All the main types of welding produce ultraviolet, visible spectrum, and infrared radiation. Since reflected light can also carry radiation, your eyes can be damaged from the arcs of other welders, too. Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in particular gets absorbed in the lens and cornea and leads to swollen, painful eyes.
Do welders go blind over time?
When welders don't properly protect their eyes from the arc, they commonly suffer welder's flash, or photokeratitis, a condition caused by exposure to intense ultraviolet radiation resulting in temporary blindness and extreme discomfort. More extreme eye injuries can result in permanent blindness

For welding mild steel, the most commonly used type of electrode is the E6013 electrode, which is coated with rutile (or titanium dioxide) and iron oxide. This type of electrode is also known as a "general-purpose" electrode and is suitable for welding in all positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead).
The rutile coating on the electrode provides a stable arc and easy-to-control weld puddle, making it ideal for beginner welders. It also produces a smooth, clean, and attractive weld bead. The iron oxide in the coating provides additional deoxidizing properties, which help remove impurities from the weld metal, resulting in a stronger and more ductile weld.
Overall, the E6013 electrode is a good choice for welding mild steel, as it provides good penetration, a stable arc, and produces a high-quality weld.
