I bought a CVA Scout in .35 Whelen. I had to send the rifle back because the headspace was excessive from the factory. I then bought a Lipsey's Ruger #1 in 35 Whelen. I use a 225 grain Sierra bullet not loaded to maximum and have an average velocity of 2816 fps. As he says in this video it is the most efficient cartridge I've ever loaded.
Now you are talking my language. I had one in a Rem 700. I got it when I was 15 and it was my goto rifle until I was 25. I still have it don't hardly use it. Another cartridge that has become obsolete where I live is the 358 Winchester. Another great round in my opinion. The 35 Whelen was considered the poor mans magnum. Great video.
I built my Whelen on a 1909 Argentine "1898 Mauser" action. Using a Shillen Barrel and Bell & Carlson stock. I strongly considered the Brown Whelen case. Its an improved version with blown out taper sharper shoulder Thats also moved forward. It offers almost 200 fps improvement in velocities in all but heaviest bullets. BUT dies was VERY COSTLY. So std Whelen it was. But to boost velocity a bit I opted for a 26.5" barrel. With Timney trigger, smith work and stock the bedding and bluing. My last pmt was nearly 750$. This was 1987. A very short time from Remingtons Classic that was released in 35 Whelen... It was about 600$. Im happy I built it how I wanted and its a awesome rifle. Its allowed me near 3000 fps with a 200g Hornady bullet. I never needed 250's but later settled on 225 as my perfect weight. Using the Sierra 225 that was made for the Whelen as my choice. It proved a little soft for my taste and I switched to the 225 Partition then the Accubond when Nosler released that. What a Bullet!!!! These expand yet hold together even at top velocities my rl15 loads move them too!!! I have started some cast bullets tests and decided upon the Accurate 36-270c as my choice. I have previously loved the Lyman 35809 but its not friendly with my Powder coat. But this 270 has been shooting touching clusters with 3031 powder at 1900+ fps. I have pushed it past 2100 but accuracy was best under 40g of powder. I have videos on my Rumble account testing 310 & 270g bullets.
I recommend you try a Sierra Game King bullet in 225 grain. They are a nicely shaped boat tail bullet I have very good luck with. I push it with IMR 4064 powder. Average of 2816 fps which equates to just under 4000 pounds of energy.
@@russellkeeling4387 Morning Russel, My own experience is the 225g Sierra is a bit fragile at those velocities but is dynamite < 2600 fps. In real actual use on game. I love the bullet in my 358's with impact velocities 23-2500 fps.
@@cw2a I've only harvested two elk with my 225 grain bullets and I don't know how fragile they were because they were not left in the animals. Both elk fell dead without another step and the bullet went on it's merry way. I do try to avoid hitting heavy bone though.

Have had one since about 1990 I believe and it hasn't disappointed. Last animal I have taken with it was a moose at a bit over 300 yards using 225 gr Accubond's in Sept 2020. That load is right around 2700 but in my old rifle the same bullet with a different powder got pretty close to 2800 fps with a 22" barrel. In this gun I also shoot 200 gr Accubond's and TTSX to 2850 fps with IMR 8208 and Nosler's mid range load listed. You can also get 250's to 2600 fps with several powders, along with the Nosler data you shared check out Speer's loads if you haven't yet. So yes it can get the kind of performance safely or at least very close like you found in your research. I really like the 200's I mentioned for black bears and mid sized game and the tougher 225's are excellent for big animals like moose. The 225 gr Sierra is a great bullet for medium game too. I shoot Sierra GameKing bullets from my .35. I know it may sound weird but it is the most attractive bullet I have ever loaded in a cartridge and very powerful. Imagine those fellows in the south that still have an old Remington 7600 in .35 Whelen. Lots of firepower there.
35 Whelen will handle 310 grain bullets at velocities equal to or greater than 9.3x62. Woodleigh provides serious loading data for their 310 and 275 grain bullets. Double Tap loads the 310 grain Woodleigh Weldcore at 2300 fps out of a 24” barreled Remington 700. Buffalo Bore loads some serious Whelen loads too including Barnes 225 grain TSX bullet in addition to other bullets. “Back in the day” Elmer Keith pushed the old Western Tool and Copper 275 grain bullet to pressures and velocities that would be questioned today. He killed lots elk and grizzly with that load. Maximum SAAMI MAP for 35 Whelen is 62,000 psi, same as 375 H&H vs 60,000 for 30-06. Just for comparison SAAMI MAP for 9.3x62 is 57,500. That will give you some idea why the 35 Whelen is able to perform like it does. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊
Built my 35 Whelen on a Garand. 8 shots of 200gr or less or 7 shots of 250gr - 310gr rounds is more than enough firepower for any animal I expect to ever run across. Grade A Boom Boom.
I love the 35 calibers ❤️ Although I don't have first hand experience with the 35 Whelen.. I have used the 350 Remington Magnum! I also use the 358 Winchester the 350 Legend and the 357 Magnum. I'd love to try the 35 Whelen one of these days! That and the 35 Remington! I definitely have noticed that the 35's are catching on these days! With the primitive weapons season ( single shot 35 Whelen ) .. straight wall restricted areas.. 350 Legend and the new 360 Buckhammer! I know this is a year old , just came on it. I'll tell you one thing about the 35 Whelen , Hornady Superfomance 200 gr loads out of a Thompson Center Encore 28 " bbl kicks like a mule and hits like a truck. Very awesome caliber.
I have a late 50's or early 60's 30-06 Parker and Hale I inherited from my dad. It likes heavier weight bullets and shoots 190 gr hornady bullets extremely well. However, I have been thinking of converting it to 35 Whelen. I like heavier weight bullets and the Whelen seems to fit the bill. Maybe this winter or next summer....
I have 2 35 Whelens one a Ruger Hawkeye 2015 edition of which only 150 were made a absolutely beautiful rifle the other is a CVA stalker with a heavy barrel it weighed a little over 7 lbs when I got it but I added wheel weights in the stock and bought it up to 9 lbs it will put my reloaded rounds through the same hole at 100 yds a devastating hunting rifle I love the 35 Whelen.
The way you get a 35 Whelen is very easy - but a nice used but blown out barrel 30-06 and get it rebored to 358. Basically a brand new rifled 35 whelen on an old stock. I did a Remington 760 to 35 Whelen. Its my most accurate rifle :)
A good way to get true ballistics is to use your chronograph and get them yourself. An app can't consider atmospheric and other variables. 35 Whelen data varies in every loading manual I own so developing a good load can be time consuming. Nosler Reloading Manual 8 has a maximun load that I go by. I do not load to that maximum but it is my maximum. With a load that is 1.5 grains below that maximum I achieve a muzzle velocity greater than that stated in the Nosler manual.
In terms of energy this is almoust the same performanse of 300 win or 338 win mag with the same weight bullet?? Any way very good cartridge. I like to have one rifle in this caliber. 👍
Yes, a Great Cartridge but, the 9.3x62 is even greater and available all over the world with a much better bullet selection. It too fits all rifles built for the .30-'06 cartridge length - just re-barrel or bore out a shot out .30-'06 or similar rifle (.25-'06, .270 Win, etc).
Sorry but I can't agree that the 9.3x62 is a greater cartridge than the .35 Whelen. 9.3x62 is a very good round and widely known in Europe and Africa but it is not a superior cartridge to the .35 Whelen.

The case capacity of the 9.3x62 is greater and the bullet (available in many more shapes and weights) from 180 gn to 320gn. I teach ballistics at 'the' P H School in South Africa and hunt there 6 months of each year. My best long range load for the 9.3x62 is a 250gn at 2600-2650 ft/sec (See Swift Reloading Manual 2 with RL 17 - 2,680 ft/sec max). What is the highest published velocity for the .35 Whelen with a 250gn bullet? I can legally and safely use the 9.3x62 in many African countries on the' big five'. The .35 Whelen cannot be used anywhere in Africa for larger game than the plains game range of animals. I recently visited a gun store in Humansdorp, South Africa and they had ten sets of 9,3x62 reloading dies. NONE for .35 Whelen. I have never seen .35 Whelen in loaded ammo in south Africa but plenty of .358 Win! Only Remington makes .35 Whelen ammunition (225 gn only) and brass. Four USA companies make 9.3x62 brass and more reload it here in the USA. Many more European countries also manufacture the 9,3x62. The Winchester Model 70 is available in Europe in 9.3x62, never the .35 Whelen! In 20 years the .35 Whelen will be gone, the 9.3x62 still thriving. I do love the .35 Whelen, and have helped Col Whelen's grandson (Townsend Whelen Boling) collect some of the colonels more obscure writings. The .35 Whelen is a good choice for Elk, Bison, and bears smaller then Polar or Kodiak but is in not a dangerous game cartridge.

What many overlook is 35cal in rifles us where cast bullets have enough diameter, weight, mass, to become viable and nearly on par with jacketed bullets. An heavy cast 35cal bullet is no joke.
Another fine cartridge that Remington legitimized and then allowed to die on the vine. Better than the 338-06. Seems like we American shooter just never warm up to the 35's. But again Remington to a bad job of pumping up a wildcat that they mainstreamed.

The danger from these cartridges is when someone shoots at you with one otherwise they are no more dangerous than a ping pong game or a honey bee. Look up how many people die playing ping pong or from honey bee stings.

Necking the 30 caliber to 35 caliber not only worked well for the .35 Whelen but it also worked very well for the .358 Winchester.

K98 rebarreled to 35 Whelen, using 250 & 275 grain bullets. Absolutely devastating on elk.

In Louisiana and Mississippi we use the 35 whelen for primitive deer season. Has to be a single shot.

Id be interested in lighter copper bullets in this cartridge. Less recoil and they'd be humming, as they need to be.
Buffalo Bore lists the Barnes 225 grain TSX at 2654 fps out of a 24” barreled Remington model 700 in their 35 Whelen line.
They have always intrigued me but all that data is out of a 26 inch barrell so unless you go custom you won't be getting none of those numbers

I do love the .35 Whelen, and have helped Col Whelen's grandson (Townsend Whelen Boling) collect some of the colonels more obscure writings. The .35 Whelen is a good choice for Elk, Bison, and bears smaller then Polar or Kodiak but is in not a dangerous game cartridge.
@@hnangell You are wrong. The case capacity of the 9.3 is greater than the .35 by one tenth of a grain with a 250 grain bullet but muzzle velocity of the .35 is greater than the 9.3. I don't have anything against the 9.3 but it is not a superior cartridge than the .35 Whelen.

What many overlook is 35cal in rifles us where cast bullets have enough diameter, weight, mass, to become viable and nearly on par with jacketed bullets. An heavy cast 35cal bullet is no joke.

Another fine cartridge that Remington legitimized and then allowed to die on the vine. Better than the 338-06. Seems like we American shooter just never warm up to the 35's. But again Remington to a bad job of pumping up a wildcat that they mainstreamed.

It's really too bad, because both the .35 Whelen and the .358 Win are actually pretty heavy hitters without going the magnum route.

The danger from these cartridges is when someone shoots at you with one otherwise they are no more dangerous than a ping pong game or a honey bee. Look up how many people die playing ping pong or from honey bee stings.
