I went shopping today. I was so thankful for your advice and that I had watch your video first. I went through looking at items (yes that I loved) but thanks to you I looked at each item in a whole new way. BOY did I save some money!!!❤ thank you again for that video❤
@@KarleenHarrison-r4c oh wow… that’s great! Thanks for sharing that with me Karleen!
Very interesting. Not only have I purchased things that I really never used over the years, I have gotten rid of things that I now regret doing so. I am going to take your advice and start clearing out those unused items. Some things I was saving in case one of my children might want them. For the most part, they do not, except maybe my Christmas items. I like primitive, New England and English decor, so I have quite the mix. Also, our house is cookie cutter suburban. Anyway, I like your list and will think of you next time I go to purchase something for our home. Thanks for the tips, may we all use them well!
@@christinecook377 you’re welcome Christine! Yes may we all use them well ❤️
Last year, I really decided to be more intentional about my decor purchases. Does it really fit my style. Where will I put it? This was a good video. Thanks! I’ve been rewatching your old spring videos to get inspiration for my spring decorating.🏠💚🌷🩷

@@luanadillingham5748 glad you enjoyed it!
I love your new videos like this! Please continue giving us one-on-one advice on living the primitive life! I would love to see one on how you guys acquire the old rug pieces that you show on tables.
@@phyllishairston975 thank you! I’ll be serving lots more of these up… getting down to the nitty gritty of decorating! As for the rugs… you just have to run across them… I inherited mine.
Wow, you gave me a lot to think about. This has to be my favorite video. 💕
I think when you were talking about, 'do I need another one' and 'do I have a place to store the excess?', that I have learned so much by watching the videos where collectors use multiples in display, and learn the art of layering. Take bowls for example....you mentioned you only have so many tables (as do I) but because I like various looks the requires different size bowls and trenchers etc, I now look for creative ways to layer the excess. I will stand a large dough bowl in a corner behind a chair for instance, use a flat bowl as a backdrop, or stack bowls on any level surface...you can put them on top of cabinets and on and on it goes...so if you can perfect the art of layering, you can still keep your pieces out on display, even when you change your look. Of course I also believe there is a stopping point 😀 And I do always make sure there will be a place for what I'm purchasing. Your consolation prize point was interesting....I sort of find myself settling for something less because I can't find what I REALLY want. One question I ask myself, if I ever upgrade, will I get my money back on this piece....I try not to settle. As far as regrets....my style changed over time and I wish I had chosen the primitive style in the first place, then I would not have the job of selling my other things etc, but honestly I think I regret more things that I don't buy, then things I buy....and I regret selling many things I've sold.
@@DeannaMoyers that’s very interesting that you regrets things you’ve gotten rid of… people usually say you never regret things that are gone but I’ve regretted a few things that I parted with too. Yes layering works… I have my trenchers layered but yet eventually one has to stop .:)
Hi Anne! My worst purchase that I have made is my sofa. It is something that I find myself purchasing other things to appease myself because I can't stand my sofa. And that is what I think I have to do is stop buying other things trying to make the sofa fit and be okay when I don't like it. I think that's what we do is when we purchase something that we're really not happy with, and then we find ourselves purchasing other things to make up for what we really didn't get that we really wanted. That might have been more money in the long run it's more worth spending the money when something you really want then to purchase something that is just okay.
@@missbonimeduridesidns1793 oh wow!!! That’s SO TRUE!!! Kind of like I kept doing with the bad paint choice! Thanks for sharing that!!!!

Great video Anne!
@@troypowell8367 thank you!
Anne this is what I have done since last year. I’m doing the same thing. I have been asking myself do I need it. I know that I would like it but, I just can’t justify spending money on something that I already own. I also have given away so many things which is fine. Now, I think about it for a while and then decide if I should buy it. I notice that I really don’t need it. Another thing is that I don’t go to thrift stores as often because I know that I will bring it home. Great 👍 video ☺️✨🙏❤️
@@dellahayden5606 yes!! That’s great! Just like me. My daughter loves thrifting and she comes home with bargains and finds 3 times a week (clothing). I don’t think she can wear it all!! She’s always challenged to organize and clean her room. I told her leas clothing, less mess:). But she’s young yet… she’ll learn.
Oh my goodness, this video was made for me. I’ve purchased or excepted other’s casts offs as constellation for way too long. Now I hate most of it and need to clear it out. I hate doing yard sales plus the work involved is overwhelming. I knew when we moved into this house it wouldn’t be forever because it’s a parsonage but it is a grand old house. Now I’m dreading the time when we do have to move because there is way too much to deal with. The last year I have been asking myself some of the very questions you shared before buying.
@@marthameadows9013 hi Martha… I agree about the yard sales… so much work… and when I drive by other people’s sales now I think of how most stuff sits there and then they’ll haul it all off to a thrift shop that may or may not want it.
Good points, Anne. Recently I purchased a colonial style rack that I fell in love with and thought I had just the perfect spot for it. However, that plan didn't work out. Nor could I find another spot for it. For now, it has been relegated to the basement. I still love it and am reluctant to part with it.
@@barbaradzitko1826 oh dear. Maybe one day you’ll wake up and it will hit you… where exactly it should go.
Great talk Anne. All of your comments make tons of good sense. Enjoyed your video, the cabinet you bought is a beauty! I have one I had in my living room, recently moved and I put it my bathroom. I use it just like you. I liked it before but couldn’t really enjoy it. Loving it now, I can see it and enjoy it.

Excellent process to purchasing. I needed this! Thank you, Anne!
@@RhondaKunkel-v6z you’re welcome Rhonda!
This was such a thought provoking video. It touched on so many good points and hit upon many of the mistakes I've made. Recently I bought what I initially thought was a beautiful cupboard. After getting it home and in better light I realized what poor condition it was in. I was sick over it. The shop I bought it at was in a neighboring state so I didn't want to inconvenience my husband into taking it back (and I didn't think the store would accept the return). So I rolled up my sleeves and spent countless hours trying to restore it without sacrificing its charm. I had some success, but whenever I look at that cupboard, I no longer feel the joy that I did when I initially found it. I learned a costly lesson. I adore primitives, but I also value quality. I think it's important to really inspect what you are buying even when you're able to say "yes" to all of the questions. Thanks, Anne, for another great video😊
@@veronicadelancey-smith6408 that’s a very good point… inspect the product. It’s such a sad story Veronica. I would feel the same way… the joy was taken out of the object for you.
*Consolation Prize* . The concept of the consolation prize is spot on. I enjoy my thrifting adventures and have lived with a few "place holders". I have a varied collection of home decor pieces, however, as I've honed in on my style, there's a lot that no longer serves my mix. You have presented many great questions for one to ask themselves prior to making a purchase. Regardless if it's new or pre-loved, I have to love it , and have a vision for styling it. I enjoy the challenge of re-styling with items I have on hand.
@@cvonsutphen yes!!! Those are place holders and sometimes they are hard to get rid of!
I agree with everything you said. The problem is as you grow older you have everything you want and everything you need! So you don’t need to shop but l love to shop! And l don’t want to get rid of anything. So l just don’t shop anymore but that’s no fun.
@@franzone70 isn’t that the truth!! It’s so challenging 😥. We love to shop and don’t need a thing!

Anne such good advice. It’s so funny I just faced this dilemma today so funny. My worst purchase and regret are some wing back recliners. Beautiful to look at but are most uncomfortable. They go perfectly with my primitive decor. Just not practical. Thanks
@@e24m6 oh dear… that’s awful when that happens. It’s like… welcome have a seat on the floor, you’ll be more comfortable. lol
My own method: Country primitive from mid to late 1800's. Sometimes spent more than I could afford that has been a good purchase in the long run. Cutesy stuff is a minimum. My weakness is holiday decorations. I've thinned out and given much to daughter. The simple painted pieces are classics. Meakin ironstone is in daily use. If I own it, I use it. The final look is most important. My muse has been James Cramer's "Seasons at Seven Gates Farm".
@@TaitWeigel thanks for sharing. I’ve found too that I buy things that are more expensive and avoid the handmades now.
I really can't think of any costly home decor item that I regret buying. I think it's normal in life to go through some style changes until finding your true "style," resulting in accumulating some/many items that no longer look right and that need to be sold, passed on, or donated. Like someone else said, I think I may have more regrets about not buying something I wish I would have, or getting rid of something I wish I would have kept. I can see from your viewer's comments that I'm not alone in loving to shop, but feeling a need to slow down on buying more things that I don't really "need." Finds that are unusual, unique, or upgrades to what I have are always good reasons to keep shopping!
@@avintagetwin9451 so well explained Diana! Yes. Those unique special things really call out. And you’re right, changing styles causes lots of in and outs.
Ha! You hit it…need vs want! My dilemma too!

I have loved decorating our home over the years. When i was in my mid 20's started liking old things. And it worked well for me because normally it was affordable for us. I fell in love w/several magazines that i would save & daydream over & get ideas from. I leaned towards a country victorian look & not realizing that i began being drawn to decorations that were prim & then when i began enjoying utube channels in 2021-- i came upon your channel & that really started me loving prim more & more. We had just moved into house where we are at now & i had some prim things, but i gradually started getting rid of some of what i had & thrifted alot & some yd sales & it was shocking how i found so ... many prim items. It seemed like once i started looking, so many items were jumping out at me. A friend came over for the first time in Nov & soon as she walked in the door -- she commented that i had forget exact words, but that i had gone prim (i was very excited that she could tell) & she toured our home & gave many compliments which i so appreciated. Appreciate your shopping advice. I use to love color & now i am more drawn to browns, beige. Tho painted our kitchen cubbards green (ended up being too bright for me) so sanded some & put a gel stain on them & wiped excess off & spray painted the chrome handles a flat black & they look old. My husband even loves them which is a bonus.
@@aprilmogensen that’s a cool story April. Thanks for sharing! I used to save and drool over country and Victorian magazines too.❤️
Several years ago I became obsessed with a utube channel that was adding a bit of glitz here and there in the decor sooooo, I purchased some glitz and tucked it in here and there and lived with it because I thought I had to. Don't have any of it now!! Also have learned that as we age, remember I will be 83 this summer, comfort level must come into play. And so, I purchased a traditional sofa that while I am not wild about, I watch my sweet husband claim it every afternoon for his nap. Having said all that, I love my prim collections and find the hunt to be what I look forward to.
@@bonniemiller9197 I love the glitz example! It’s so perfect.

The pewter set is gorgeous and a great price! FB marketplace is awesome & the only reason I have a FB account. 😊
@@shellyswt marketplace is great but I don’t look at it much for this very reason. In fact, my cousin sent me this listing…
I am really careful and give great thought about buying a larger item if I am not 100% sure about it. If that is the case I always consider if I don’t love it once I get it home, can I easily resell it and get my investment back. I have made a couple of mistakes with buying yellow ware bowls and also wooden measures when I’ve been at garage or estate sales and the prices are too good to resist. Then I’ve gotten home and realized I already have the exact ones already 🤷♀️. Great video Anne!!

Purchased a high back sofa with a lover's knot fabric, black and tan...hated it from the moment it crossed the threshold of the front door. I've always had solid fabric sofas, but decided to try something different, go outside of my box and throw caution to the wind...well, I lived with that very expensive sofa five years and three months..replaced it with a Camelback sofa, solid color..but, with buffalo check throw pillows that match the new fireside chair..Now, I'm at peace and my home is once again calm..lesson learned, even at this age...😉. Isn't amazing how disruptive a piece of furniture can be if you don't like it?
@ that’s true!! I had that problem for years.
Very interesting!
Thanks.
My theory is, if you get a bunch of things you really like, then when you get enough cool stuff, it will look great when you put it altogether. That is what has worked for me. If you get a basic black vase, then it will go with a lot of seasonal vignettes. If you get something yellow, then you may be able to add it to a June vignette with blue. You can add yellow into a fall vignette with orange, brown and red. And of course add it to a March vignette with green.
Even an ugly old owl can look good on a stack of books for Back to School in September.
And also in October with the branch and full moon. But I think I will stick to pictures of owls - I haven't seen one I want to buy! If I bought one, I think I would regret it.
