There's some double standard going on here. Erica and Powell suspect that Joan is involved in the beating of a prisoner, but leave her on duty - but when they suspected Steve of rape, they suspend him....
If it was Steve under suspension Powell would be like a blood hound trying to prove it, she hates him for no good reason. I think she's jealous of his good looks and knows he wouldn't ever touch her and is jealous of the receptionists he dates and flirts with so she's vile to him. It's the only explanation I can come up with.
Some of the comments here about poor Suzie are disgusting. There's no wonder we live in such a sick and corrupted world if people can't even see what's right in front of their faces in a fictional TV show. I mean, seriously, what's with all the victim blaming? It makes no sense. Some of these people and their lack of human empathy and understanding make me sick. :(
Whilst we can't blame Susie entirely, she did volunteer to stay at Donna's place and she knew what she was letting herself in for. Des is a sleaze and no excuse to be exploiting a young girl, but it was still Susie's choice. She should've just gone straight to Judy. Once you get hooked, it's hard to get out.
If Susie moved in with Judy at the time she would have to sleep with Jude since she had the only room that was ready and we all know Judy’s history with young girls.
@@Mosie926 Judy made a pass at Georgie Baxter who was 19. Although not a minor she's way too young for Judy who has a way of turning on her best friends Bea and Myra when it comes to young inmates.
Ed Jones yet - Chrissie made that complaint against Faulkner which was taken VERY seriously. And remember that Vera was always getting caught out by Davo.
@ 12:36 Po-face signing out says it's been "the longest day of my life" WTF as a mother shouldn't the longest days have been when your daughter was missing? Abducted and RAPED????
Wow, the series sure has taken a dark turn. Thing is it hits the nail on the head on the reality of what it is like to be female with no power, no chance, no hope. Being looked down on at every turn.
I always enjoy Lisa Crittenden's (Maxine) performances; she was great in Sons & Daughters too. These really are the golden episodes of Prisoner. They just all of a sudden got everything together.
Ian Bradley was the original producer of the show. John McRae screwed up and made Val/Bea quit the show. Marie Trevor screwed up the show period by bringing her bratty daughter Lexie on to the show.
82 is one of my favourite years on Prisoner, the high calibre acting, the storylines.. Maggie K, Amanda Muggleton, Val Lehman, Arkie Whitely and Sheila Florence are particularly good in these episodes and I have always loved Lisa Crittenden as 'Maxine', great addition to the cast.
I actually feel so sorry for both for Suzie & Donna.. The evil git is that des. Soon as he spots a young innocent girl - with no home or family. He talks them round to sleeping with men to make money and the worst thing is that he gets them addicted to drugs - so he's their pimp and milks cash out of them. Both donna & suzie are both victims in away. And happens in real life. which is a very very sick fact of life. Their are sickos in the world at do this and pray on innocent girls like Suzie & Donna. This was back in the 80's but its something that still happens to this very day. sadly. its a very very sick & twisted world. so No l don't fully blame Suzie or Donna.
@ 42:10 - Chrissie once again confirms that she would rather have her child raised by strangers than by Brenda. Chrissie doesn’t love her daughter. Chrissie only loves the idea of someone loving her unconditionally. She thinks that love is OWED to her. Latham is probably the most self-centered character in this entire series.
Susie has only herself to blame for the situation she is in. Mrs.Bemish that ran the young women's home, was not an unreasable sort of woman. All she wanted was for Susie was to keep her room tidy, to be in at 11pm on a weekday night and ask in advance if she could stay out later on the weekend or of she was not going to make it to dinner. For a 17 yr old thoes were quite fair requests. Mrs.Bemish also was nice enough to give Susie a birthday gift, which she rudly dismissed for Lizzie's hat.
Susie is naïve and has been abused all her life by people in authority over her. Mrs Beamish was another authority figure, but due to Susie's past experiences, she couldn't trust Beamish's best intentions. Sure, Beamish was pretty decent to Susie, but the girl is hardly to blame. You're saying she deserved to be raped by Des for not understanding Beamish's intentions? What a sick way of looking at life. Do you also think women deserve to be raped for wearing short skirts and that women who don't leave their abusive husbands deserve what they get? What a privileged life you've had. I'm so happy that you've never experienced any of the trauma that leads people to be distrusting of those with good intentions and trusting of people with bad intentions.
While this show is timeless, how wild to google search the young ladies now. Easy to forget they are now much older women. We are still appreciating the craft practiced while they were young'uns.
Arkie didn't look ten years older. They just had her looking as bad as possible because of Donna's heroin addiction. Arkie was quite pretty and became a beautiful woman as she got older. Sadly she died at only 37 of cancer.
Maxine looks like she's going to be hilarious. Also, maybe she can volunteer some dirt on Joan since they know each other. Poor Donna. She is so dead if anything happens to Susie. Susie probably should have just agreed to live with Jo.
I think she loses it when they can see through her manipulation tactics . Or they stand up to her. I don't know what is worse her mental abusive of the prisoners or her physical assault on them. She certainly puts the fear of God into me. She will always in my book what a great villian is. I also thought the Ferguson in the remake was very good.
So just as we're losing Doreen we get Maxine and soon after Maxine leaves we get Bobbie and when Bobbie leaves we're stuck with Lexi, followed by Brumby. We don't get a break do we.
Perspective changes your opinion of characters. When I watched this in the 80s when I was a teenager, I hated Powell and liked Chrissie Latham. I'm totally the opposite now, I've come to appreciate Colleen Powell for her firm but fair attitude and strong desire to ensure the women are not abused. 15 years as a teacher made me appreciate Po-Face.
Maxine got up the nose of Lizzie real quick.Calling her granny and if a bit younger Supergran Lizzie would have lamped her one.I do feel sorry for Susie a real innocent, never spiteful too trusting that is all, nice girl to be fair.gr73
Mad Maxine Daniels is a real hoot. I love the witty banter between her and Lizzie. Why is Susie such a vapid, vacuous ninny? She should go and stay with Judy in the halfway house which was named after her.
Are we going to leave her on duty? " mmm for the time being " Erica are you serious. So much for keeping an eye on the freak didn't take her long to get to Latham.
Yeah Chrissie, have your baby adopted out. Then you'll never see her for the rest of your life. She'll forget all about you by the time she's about five. And all you'll have are memories of that beautiful curly haired baby. Because they always match an adopted child who looks like a biological parent, blond hair, blue eyes, curls.
Did I miss a scene where they decided that Joan would be called "The Freak"? I was hoping to see the part where the name was coined. But it seems like they just went straight to calling her that.
That flat suzie is hauled up in is the exact same set they use when Bobby get kidnapped to Sydney...They use the same furniture and everything....good old prisoner and it's recycling of sets...lol
I'll be glad when this storyline has finished. I hate the sight of needles. Bet Susie wishes she was on the farm with Jo now. Also, who would believe Chrissie could intimidate Joan enough to do that?
Actually Des said that Donna was a year younger than Suzie when he got her started in prostitution. So she was only 15. It's sad that Donna is treated like dirt and everyone saves all their compassion and concern for only Suzie. Donna is a victim too.
There's some double standard going on here. Erica and Powell suspect that Joan is involved in the beating of a prisoner, but leave her on duty - but when they suspected Steve of rape, they suspend him....

Yeah I thought the same, for a serious beating like that! And Ted has swept it all under the carpet! That just wouldn't happen x
Maxine: "Nice place you got here."
Mrs. Davidson: "Good. We must see if we can extend your stay."
Love it!
Maxine: I came off me bike doing 80.
Officer Barry: Well come out of the van at the same speed.
Finally, Barry gets a funny line.

The new prisoner getting out of the paddy wagen sounds like Doreen
the Freak is so slippery at getting out of so much
Why. Is Ferguson getting away with this any other officer in the service anywhere would be suspended

@Ed Jones : Steve got suspended for much less
Steve got suspended and Chrissie didn't have a scratch on her.
Joan has an unrealistic amount of luck throughout the series.
Never mind that, just consider that she kept her job for over 300 episodes, despite her constant bullying, psychotic violence and corruption!
22:05 I was looking away from the computer at this point for a few seconds. I thought it was Doreen clowning around.
Next to Suzie's bed is a bottle of baby oil and a jar of Vaseline. The set designer had a sick sense of humor.
Not really. Those are items a sex worker would have.

He's the same. Different Brenda.
Why does he suddenly appear now? Was he on a trip to England?
