THAT was my class trip when graduating W V public schools in 1953...came down from Weirtron/Follansbee High School...also went there with my father to view boxing matches in 1943 from Warwood...always remember that...folks were from Wheeling area...
Very chilling. Looking at these living conditions, it's easy to see that the mentality behind the penal system had no concept of human psychology. I mean, really; you take people who are social misfits, horribly dehumanize them as a group...and then eventual return them to society even more poorly adapted to the world and culture in which they are expected to somehow function. The idea that you can punish the psychological flaws and inadequacies out of people is such an archaic puritanical concept...a premise often born more of sadism than a desire to help either the individual or the society to which they must return. There is no more disturbing example of this sadistic mindset than the fact that, in 1897, _five thousand_ people paid _huge_ money for the pleasure of watching a public hanging. It is heartening that this penitentiary is a relic of the past.
Most old penitentiaries were made like this if you do a search you'll see. The Maryland State in Baltimore and Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh are the only state penitentiaries I ever saw that were in the inner city both very violent.
Not fair how did you get full access? I paid for a tour and only got to see a few stupid rooms. My grandfather was even a guard there and still had all the keys
My cousin did 20 years in this place said it was crazy he was 18 when he got locked up I grew up across the river in Powhatan Point Ohio and remember going to visit him all the time
This tour guide needs a lesson on how to be enthusiastic and interesting. Especially, when she is in a job that can be easily replaced with technology/headphones.
Stephanie White my mom had to walk past it when she was in first grade but when someone broke out by her school she said that the person who broke out broke into her school
Place was literally closed because it was to infested guards would strip at their door when they went home not to bring in roaches jay williams went hear i think
I've taken this tour twice and I live 5 hours away both times were amazing! One of The best tours I've ever been on!

Well what do you expect from a country founded by puritans
I think they was aware of how poor the system was and did not give a shit. They was making money.
And that is why we have such a high rate of recidivism, most go back if they themselves don't or can't fix whatever is broken.
