- Confined within the boundaries of the model minority myth, Asian Americans are commonly perceived as a mass of indistinguishable overachievers who are all “smart” and “good at math.” However, these seemingly positive stereotypes can have a detrimental impact on not only Asian Americans, but also race relations in general. In this talk, Alice Li draws from research studies and her personal experiences to challenge the two-dimensional identity outlined by the model minority myth.
Originally from Kentucky, Alice Li is a sophomore at Vanderbilt University. She is pursuing a major in neuroscience and a minor in music performance. In 2015, she was honored as a United States Presidential Scholar and as a Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship recipient. Outside of class, she enjoys cooking, playing piano, writing articles for the student newspaper, conducting research in a psychology lab, and participating in cross-cultural organizations. Her diverse interests stem from a desire to both create and exchange ideas with others, and she is passionate about exploring the intersection of academic disciplines and personal stories.

Wow she’s so right though: when she said “one American won the gold metal and one American won the silver metal” I immediately expected her to say “and one Asian won the bronze metal”. What the myth is really about is manipulating apparent signs of success as a tool that denies all our right to voice our race related experience whether we’re Asian or not

I replayed that segment at least ten times...
that line was so powerful. It reminded me of one of the replies in some video where the person arguing said that if Indians can do it/overcome racial barrier, why can’t other asians do that. As a non-American myself that gave me a quite weird feeling as if it was some person justifying their racism in the guise that it did not exist itself. The person’s further argument was as if there is discrimination/little there might be, but it is not that much giving the example of Sundar Pichai and other Indians as CEOs

The incites on this was very informative. Having been able to travel in the US Air Force as a Security Police and being stationed in Japan, Korea and Philippines. I found myself surrounded by people who in America are a minority and now they are the majority. Meaning that now I learnt that people who I rarely see are quite more interesting than what was portrayed in American society. Now me being a African-American sometimes we are the majority in many places. As compared to our Asian American brothers and sisters. So when I was first stationed overseas in Korea in the year 1987, I really started to become more understanding of the Asian American experience. I am glad that I was able to acquire relationships and friendships from being open minded and taken advantage of opportunities of diversity.

I sometime think "Asian-American" is a misnomer. I was born and raised in America my entire life. I have never held any other nationality besides that of a US citizenship. My ethnicity is Asian, but my nationality is, currently, and has always been, 100% USA.

A big thank you to the author for bringing this important topic up. I appear Asian, however, I was born and raised in a country that used to belong to USSR. So essentially, in my head, I'm Russian. I consider myself a person who has first-hand experienced and developed appreciation for different religions and cultures due to my upbringing. However, I used to always feel out of place. Coming to the US, I thought that finally I can belong. For me, the US was a multicultural country, which accepted all. Little did I know about "yellow fever", the term "Twinkie" or model minority myths)))
it's not a myth. You are asian but your ethnic upbringing may be of something else. east asians make more money than whites. South east asians don't make as much money. It appears you can't handle reality so i won't delve deeper into why it's like that.
Great talk. I am an Asian latina and feel bad for Asian Americans. You never really feel like you belong. Not asian enough, not american enough, not latina enough. Your self-esteem takes a hit. When I was a kid, I didn't have these thoughts, maybe because I was surrounded by too many mixed blood asian-latinos. But coming to Canada where I now live, the feeling of being foreign is much more pronounced as I see more segregated racial communities. You'd think because it is a first world country, this wouldn't happen. It is a very strange feeling.. The more people talk about it, the worst I feel for fitting in the stereotype. The worst thing is that sometimes I take comfort knowing that since I am Asian latina, I am more unique than other Asian Americans. It is a very deep feeling which is wrong. The media certainly makes it worse. Listening to 'good' stereotypes is a way of protecting yourself, but ultimately makes you feel guilty. It is like there is no win win. Everyone deserves to be treated as a unique person.

Meriam Webster defines it as a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment. To say that all stereotypes must have a factual basis, or aren't often derived from misinterpretation would be dishonest. In fact many stereotypes have no factual basis and are derived from propaganda/anecdotal association. It seems you're the one causing yourself this "confusion."

I'm black and it's true that Asian are often left out in big debates. for example, in the last election I didn't heard the Media asking about who they would vote for. But Asians have to speak up, the only way to get change and show that we aren't happy about certain situations is to shake the system. Republicans can't handle that. but without the constant noises that African Americans make when white people try to get back on their old racist ways this country would still have slavery. people don't define you, you tell them who you're and you make them respect it. of course there are black people who are racists toward Asians and Asian against black people. And not all white people are racists. but the system should benefits all of us. which is why people call out white people, it's because the system is only profiting them and everyone else has to fight against the system so against white privilege and stereotypes.

I'm a foreigner living in Japan, I have other friends in China and South Korea. We all experience the idea of being the perpetual foreigner. Home country Asian even treat immigrated Asians as outsiders but still get Asian benefits. That's just the world we live in.

Middle Eastern and Indian are also classified as Asian in the "income bracket."
@anurag693 Asians include pakistan, india and some of middle east decent in US census.
Middle Easterners are not counted as Asians in the statistics she was using for income as the census bureau does not include Middle Easterners into the "Asian" category but rather the "white/ Caucasian" category.

I admire her courage, but the problem I have with these kind of analysis is that it analyses the symptoms but does not go the heart of the problem; the perception of the white Christian majority group about their fellow citizens. There's where the problem is and there is where we should start: study the mind, behavior, perceptions, norms and values held by whites and how they project that on other fellow Americans who don't look like them. However, the people that should be standing on the podium to explain this, most of them are sitting in the audience. So, we have a wrong directional discussion and the problem remains. It's the whites that should explain why they perceive and treat others differently than themselves.
Wow, I've been saying this for a while now (different words but same sentiment). I'm glad somebody else sees it the same way. Unless White people get involved and begin to examine their own biases and prejudices, the problem will continue to exist because that is the root of the problem.

When people ask me what race am I, I would answer, Chinese-Japanese-Hawaiian. I stick with the American culture of the high socio-economic class. I'm smart and good at math, but that is about it.

A minority group that all other minority groups should basically look up to because they're the ideal model. A group of minorities, non white, who are seen as the ideal minority, or ideal non white, immigrant, ethnic group. They are seen as the cream of the crop amongst all minorities.

"Race still matters" (in the US and probably western Europe) only to the degree it fits within the larger psychological construct of people's tendency to quantify anyone different. That, however, applies well beyond race. Yet race is somehow the biggest? I don't believe it's a substantial problem, only a phenomenon of humanity, occasionally tinged with wrong conclusions and/or magnified and misplaced outrage.

West Asian groups do around the same as European groups and fall under the "white/Caucasian" category in the census bureau. The statistics she used encompassed East, Southeast, and South Asian groups as they are included under the "Asian" category.

From an immigrated Asian who used to be laughed at his strong accents back in high school, I would say Asian-American are smart and talented. They outperformed whites in all areas from education to jobs performed. I'm not scaling on the level of vertical, but I'm talking about horizontal analysis. As we all can see Asian are out performing Whites from year after year. Why don't you mention that Asian privileged. If we think us as an minority then why wouldn't they. Come on, you guys are smart, and talent, but we might need to work on some self-esteem. I see all the Asian always hangout as a group, and don't usually break out the box. I also see Asian people call other Asian people who hangout with white or try to fit "white brainwashed". I get it, racism is there. Honestly as a hispanic person I could care less, my personal view is that we are all people and we all have different ways of being based on culture, and we can respect each others cultures if we wish. And I know Asians are seen as a model minority but it's not like my whole world is the U.S or Europe, there's a whole world out there, different cultures and people, that whole stereotypical rhetoric isn't global, and therefore constitutes my lack of shits to give.

Just a thought but maybe this notion of Asian Americans being foreigners has to do with them being perceived as insular to their cultures. All people congregate around their own ethnic group. The way to stop stereotypes is beginning with individuals. As a person who isn't Asian just from personal experience the people who do the best in school are Asian. Stereotypes die off when they are no longer true.
But stereotypes mean that there some truth to it, stereotype doesn't mean myth, and asians got to score higher than whites blacks and browns, to go to the same school, and as in score high i mean this, say u had to score 500 pts on the sat test to pass, if an asian person scored 500 they wouldnt pass we would have to score 600 to pass and thats the governments rules.

First off everyone race has stereotypes so be it positive or negative, you should t let it define you even if others see you like this initially. Everyone judges everyone else on stereotypes until they get to know you. Second, she kept on saying she is Asian American yet the argument was that they don’t see someone as just American. How about she just call herself as American. If everyone said that they were American then maybe there would be a change and everyone would be accepted as American. If everyone is to come together then there has to be common ground. This is one thing that everyone can do is just call themselves American without identifying as something else. She misunderstood the “What are you” question. That question (grammatically incorrectly asked) is commonly simply a way of finding out a person’s ethnicity. The question should not have been seen as a discriminatory question, but rather of curiosity about her ethnicity. Basically the question was “Are you Chinese, Korean, Japanese, or some other Asian descent?”
I agree. But at the same time I wonder how a European American would react if asked the same question. It makes sense in the context of asking an Asian American because that is a question we are used to. But if that was asked to a European American, of which have just as many different nationalities within them, the question might not be as obvious to them because it's not something that is acceptable to ask. Only the second way of phrasing it would be acceptable.
The fact that someone coined a phrase , model minority , means you are supposed to live up to it's expectation , screw that and just do your best to please God almighty with your own individual life , that's all that matters!

I wasn’t going to comment on this-even after reading some of the most vile spewing hateful comments against African-American people. But that was before I listened to the video in its entirety. And just as I thought, yep she headed in the exact direction I thought she would…and a little further. So I must say a little something.
"How do you object to stereotypes that sound like compliments?" You can’t. ...And you don’t. ...And Asians haven't. And that’s the rub. Who in their right minds would? Especially when it affords you such high esteem and thus high placement and access in society. Asians are at the top in the schools and therefore hired more. Employers go hunting for Asians more than any other group, besides Caucasians. I can’t help but think, then what’s their problem? I see none. The “Model Minority Myth” works in Asians' favor; and it’s not a myth. Asian are at the top of the employment scale because they have proved that they are so very competent in pretty much everything they do. Do Asians have some people who are not high achievers? Sure. Just as she's stating here. And those who've chosen to live in the States, for the most part, know and understand exactly why this is so. Which is why now, on behalf of the Chinese community, really, she's trying to make a case for asking Government spending for them, while masking it on whole as an Asian thing. However, "Heavy is the head that wears the crown." So, continue to wear it proudly and demonstrate once again your ability to creatively think your way out of this perceived bad situation, in order to improve the lives of your "under achievers", without the use of comparisons of African-Africans in order to now unashamedly get subsistence from Public Dole/Government tax spending/welfare, food stamps, housing and the like. I wish she hadn't have brought African-American's into their squabble. We certainly don't and can't compare. The reason behind Asian poverty and African-American poverty are not the same. They are "two horses of a different color".

The irony of her pointing to the disparities of varying ethnicity groups among Asians. So it would seem that even among Asian Americans the biggest indicator of economic success is not based upon race but education and work ethic. For instance, the Hmong (37% have a high school education), versus Japanese (98% higher education); seems like education and not ethnicity is the determinant for higher income.
The actual reason is the history of the groups. Japanese immigrants have been in US since early 20th century. Hmong refugees arrived late after Vietnam War in 1970s. Japanese have had head start with assimilation attempts while Hmong still struggle with poverty due to struggles to remain in school while caring for family members
Asian privilege is extremely prevalent in public schools. This transfers directly into the work force.

There is no such thing as “Asian privilege”. Please take the time to research the demographic among poverty rates, casting within mainstream movie industries, employment records, and poverty rates among all Asian groups. You will find that you are very mistaken.
The privilege they enjoy is due to sheer hard work. You don’t see Asians looting stores during hurricanes like some others! Not even the poor ones, not even back home!

Older generations of Chinese Americans of the past wished that American recognized Chinese were smart people and not the sick man of Asia. In the 1950's Chinese stereotype was either laundry man or runs a small chop suey take out. One way Chinese Americans fought bigotry and prejudice was academic and economical achievement. It was a generational struggle. My father never finished HS, both parents ran a laundry mat in the 1950's in suburbia NJ. Four of his kids went to state college. No Ivy League schools. Two of his sons served in the US military as officers thru the ROTC program as a way to pay for college. His only grandson just graduated with honors from RIT and employed as an electrical engineer. Maybe his great grand children will build on this and be the first to get advanced degrees. Most Asian Americans have achieved this reputation and now the American colleges and culture are trying to discourage it? Ms Li, stop feeling guilty. There is no shame in this reputation. Learn to use it to your advantage to seek economic opportunities that many in this country do not have.

The few whites in China were treated quite well only because there are so few of them. They are never perceived as a threat socially or economically and therefore be treated civilly. Racial tension is inevitable in USA because the African Hispanic minority is growing faster and White Americans' majority is eroding. The juicing technology jobs in Silicon valley are taken up by well-trained Indians. The union blue collar whites no longer enjoy clearly superior economic prestige. It is all in the numbers. Had there been more Asians in the US, this so called model minority myth will not be perpetuated.
Asians have many different people. They are not same. Because Asia is huge. Look at map: North Asia, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. For example, northeast asians are minitory in USA except chineses. I dont see many koreans or japaneses both schools and work places. I know that many Southeast asians & south asians really hate northeast asians due to different culture and appearance. We are unique as northeast Asians. I also heard that Americans like more south asians and Southeast asians like Filipino, because their culture is closer to western culture. not much unique unlike Japan or Korea.

So the current sentiment of the white population is not unexpected. If real political power is not gathered by all Asians, the fate of native Americans(who went from majority hosts status to the current "nations") and the African blacks(who fared better but were captured, humiliated, and traded) might just be around the corner. The Chinese Exclusion Act was repealed by the Magnuson Act only in 1943 after 60+ years.
The so called model minority is just a gambit. You are painted into a corner having to work harder for less.
