Being it was only momentarily, my guess is there was residue in the stack that had to be burnt off. It’s good to keep it clean, but not always avoidable when it runs more often than not

Thanks for the explanation. The same unit was on 11 the following morning and was still smoking, so I'm guessing you're right.

I've seen plenty of freight GE's do this but not AMTK. Nice catch plus throw-in 306 at the rear and it sure made for an interesting evening. CPKC. On 7\4 CPKC dropped 29 cars at Reeseville WI and Virtual Rail showed it WB on BNSF @ Rochelle about the time it was due in Saint Paul. They probably caught it before it left Chicago but probably took a while to arrange a crew and pilots on BNSF holiday day. Sadly #8 was probably past lacrosse and they had to back it up to there as it didn't pass Rochelle until 5 a.m. on the 5th already 13 hours overdue into Chicago. Too bad they didn't use WSOR via Beloit and Madison. I don't recall any bad clearances and their freights do 40. What a way to spend the holiday!

Good question. On the date this video was filmed, Amtrak train 28 out of Portland was canceled due to maintenance on the Fallbridge sub. Train 28 normally combines with train 8 in Spokane. But since train 28 was canceled, Amtrak decided to run a full consist out of Seattle. 306 would have been on 28, but since it was canceled, Amtrak just tacked 306 on the back of 14. Since 14 terminates in Seattle, and 8 originates out of Seattle, 306 was sent on 14 so it could be added onto 8 the next day. 306 would later be dropped off in Spokane. Hope that makes sense.

The 306 broke down and was set out in a siding south of Eugene. It was towed back to Seattle on this train a few days later.
