  • FLASH An innovative electron radiotherapy technology
CERN and Switzerland’s Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) collaborate to develop the conceptual design of an innovative radiotherapy facility that focuses on obtaining high-energy electrons for a frontier radiotherapy technique called the FLASH radiotherapy, a highly targeted form of cancer treatment, capable of reaching deep into the patient’s body with less side-effects than traditional radiotherapy.

How does it spare healthy tissue when it has to pass through some to get to the tumor?

Think of it being like Ghostbusters. The beams are harmless on their own, but if you cross the beams there is an additive effect at that crossing point. The individual beams are short enough and low enough radiation that it doesn’t have enough energy to damage tissue. Tissue destruction only happens where the beams cross each other. This is also how most conventional radiotherapy works already, just they are changing the type of radiation used, so the doses are as short and low energy as possible.

@@TheRealMythril By what mechanism does crossing the beams increase the dose? How big does the accelerator need to be? How do the benefits and costs compare to heavy ion therapy?

@@alienzenx because the area at the cross over is being hit by multiple beams rather than one. I’m not privy to the detail of the equipment, but the use principle is no different than with other forms of targeted radiotherapy. For questions about the equipment and testing, you should probably contact CERN public relations team.

@@TheRealMythril Sure, that is true for any kind of radiation therapy. Electrons deposit most of their energy near the surface though, so I don't see how this is appropriate for for treating tumors inside the body. I am not sure what exactly is new here.

Is this treatment useful to repair damaged brain’s cells? Other too but outside, example optic nerve cells damaged. Thanks.

Or they could use the cancer-reversing frequency that completely wipes it out of the body. But hey, some like it hot.
