Florida Native Landscape Tour: Drought Tolerant, Low Maintenance Plants in a Coastal Yard!

- For our first Landscape tour we look to Jason Green, who wanted his his landscape to look like the house was dropped right in the middle of a natural area. Bruce Turley took on his designwork and put together a yard that aims to combine native plant communities with landscape design and structure. The property includes coastal as well as inland aspects of Pinellas county, from Mangroves and Beach Sunflower to Slash Pines and Palmettos.

I wish there were more ppl like you
I remember this property from the Pinellas FNPS landscape tour, years ago. It was a new landscape then. It has grown in beautifully. Love, love, love!
I absolutely LOVE this! Very informative and helpful - and that homeowner is a true role model, let's all bring back native Florida landscapes that were here long before our houses were!
You did such a good job of designing this yard! This looks much nicer, IMO, than the neat, symmetrical native designs that I usually see.
I love seeing what natural Florida looks like. Very nice 👍🏼 🌴
Thanks for the comment! Nothing like the beauty of nature 😍
Love to see it. Thank you to the owner who chose to give back to nature and Wilcox nursery for what you all do!
I really enjoyed this. I hope this network continues to produce more videos. Thank you.
Thank you! Times are stressful now, but we will do our best to keep bringing quality content!
I love native landscape designs. I would love to see more. Thanks!
We definitely have more planned, so stay tuned!
I thought I had a native passion fruit, but wasn't sure until I saw it here. Just went to check it and indeed it has a small white flower! It's growing next to an Alexander palm, so I'm going to help it grow up it. Thank you for these videos, I learn so much!
Thank you for watching! We're so glad to hear you took something away from it 😊
Great design!
Enjoyed this video very much. Beautiful Florida garden.
Thank you Carmen!
So helpful to see how this native lawn matured. Enjoyed Bruce's discussion of placement considerations and the characteristics and value of individual plants, as well as the value of natives in general. Keep 'em coming, this was excellent!
Thank you for the feedback! We're glad you enjoyed and the next tour is in production, so stay tuned!
Wow! Great tour! I’m doing a Florida Friendly Landscape up in Pasco County. I want to come on down to see y’all and get a few plants from you. Passion vine, wilson stopper and that fire bush. I I’ll come see you ! The next few months. Many thanks for the work you’re doing! Awesome.
Thank you for supporting native plants! I've bought from Wilcox sand pines and other natives and have gone full native!
We should be thanking you for going full native, Brian!
Yes but the real joy is installing it yourself but I love it
We love to see people getting their hands dirty and planting native plants!
Love this yard 🐛🦋🐝🐞
You have come a long way in native plant advocacy.
Thank you so much Linda! We do our best to educate!
Miss your videos. They’re all very good.
Great video! I would love to see the yard again once it has more of the flowers coming in
Absolutely! We would love to do a revisit when things are in bloom!
Thanks for the Video clip! Apologies for butting in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Proutklarton Protecting Aqua Plan (should be on google have a look)? It is a good one off guide for getting prepared for a mega drought minus the hard work. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate finally got great results with it.
Always good information so timely and so good for us and the environment 👍🏽❤️❤️❤️🌱🌱
Thanks again Rick! We're glad you're enjoying the content 😎
Thanks Bruce! Glad to see these web promotions! Getting the word out. Individual choices can make a difference. Paul B. Seminole
I'm glad you enjoyed the video Paul!
Thank you. Great to see plants I've read about!
Although I live in a retirement community on the eastern side of TAMPA BAY, I have still been able to plant native species. However, I am looking for a couple of native medium size trees that grow very quickly. I'm 76 years old and would like to enjoy a mature tree. So I need native plants, shrubs, and a couple more trees that I can enjoy before I kick the bucket.
need to get ride of those synthetic pines
I love the idea of the mixed hedge! I'm curious which plant is to the right of the Silver Buttonwood.
Thanks for watching Rebecca! The plant to the right is actually another Florida Privet, just a bit younger; it is such an underutilized plant in the landscape, it really does make for a great screening plant while supporting plenty of birds and pollinators!
I wish you were here in Miami...😔
Reach out to Giraldo’s Landscaping, they’ll get you fixed up with native designs!
I’m looking for native plants for the narrow north side of my yard. Any suggestions?
To be frank, there are too many to list! Depending on the height and look you want, site conditions and maintenance level, there are a lot of choices! Feel free to give us a call, email or stop by the store and we'd be happy to help!
@@WilcoxNurseryandLandscape Bought narrow leaf sunflowers and milkweed to space along a fence with glossy leaf coffee.
Those are great choices! All sound like plants that should thrive in the same conditions, perfect!
very nice to see planting with wildlife in mind. I want to see a shift in what the home owners perceive as beautiful. I get tired of seeing cookie cutter turf and ornimental do nothing plants and water sprinklers and spray trucks everywhere. And little to feed the birds and bees. Too bad that If I tried this in St Pete a crazed neighbor would not like it and call code enforcement because it did not have carpet grass, and the native bunch grass is more than 8 inches tall, or shrubs too tall blocking view of the house, which is of course the idea. Or that plants are covering and growing over the sea wall. One concern I do have is about eventual mature pines in hi winds plus possible dead pines someday due to pine beetle, will they hold up over as overstory species here over time? I love how the pines provide automatic soil mulching services. Native landscapers had no worries of trees toppling onto million dollar homes, But doing the best you can possibly do here. I would think that the original gradually sloping shoreline (without seawall) had more gradual transition to the pines and oaks anyways, they would be further inland. But I appreciate the showing of the plant community all in one lot. The variety of plants selected are the tools.
Thanks for your comment! This is just one of many projects we have done, but the more we can promote this kind of planting the more likely it will be to catch on!
I noted the pine trees are pretty close to the house. How close is acceptable?
Oooh, how fun to see a native FL plants landscape design!
Thanks for watching! Hopefully you got some ideas for your own yard 😉
W.O.W.
Great video. Thanks for all the information. In your experience, Are any of the plants in the video harmful to dogs?
The only thing that you should be cautious of are coontie seeds; they contain toxins.
Are you located on Indian Rocks Road? Is Bill Mc Mullen still there?
Bill is not longer the owner, Bruce Turley took over the nursery in 2000. He's still in the Bay area though!
