- This lecture is called: Orthodoxy and Asceticism - Why and what is its purpose in our Christian lives and was given by Kevin Allen after an extensive study on the subject, from biblical, patristic and practical perspectives.
This is the fifth in the 2014 adult catechism series “Acquiring the Mind of the Church” hosted by St Barnabas Orthodox Church in Costa Mesa, CA.
I love my papa so much and this video is a great reminder on how he loved church so much I miss him so much
Helena Byers, I miss him so much also. I didn’t know him personally, only by listening to him on AFR, but he seemed so kind and compassionate, and very much like a loving “papa.” 🙂

God bless you, Kevin. This lecture was just wonderful and down to earth. I am sure that it will help many. I am a convert from Anglicanism, and I never heard of concepts like this in all my years of worship and even service as a sub-deacon and eucharistic minister. No one ever discussed the idea that the purpose of life was Theosis and that the requirements for salvation were the same for both clergy an laity. And even my Calvinist friends were of the "once saved, always saved" variety and didn't seem to think like the Apostle Paul, that the race had to be run successfully to the end.

As a new catechumen, hearing a presentation like this is a profound blessing and introduction to the ascetic life, a truly exciting life in Christ! I've listened to it twice and am certain I'll return for additional hearings as there is so much here. Thank you so much for this!!!

@@truckdriver8416 The Orthodox Church in Finland has about 50 000 members, that's about 1% of the population. Still, it's the official State church together with the Lutheran (~65% of p.)
The Finnish Ortho. Church is autonomous and belongs under Constantinople. It follows the Gregorian (Western) calendar.

A great presentation of the patristic orthodox view of our life in Christ ! I discovered Orthodoxy a while back... though I was very involved with and very much alive in a nondenominational Christian fellowship (which in many ways mirrored the orthodox view of salvation) after living with orthodox friends and worshipping with the orthodox - I can't explain, but in time the pennies started to drop!!! - the cobwebs of the overreactions and false dichotomies of reformation thinking were blown away!!! The Holy Spirit completely revolutionised my view of the faith - by the mind of the early church... Thank you Kevin....(will be received at some point)
Above all, of course Christians of all types should - Pray and Live the Way! But also study the church fathers (for God's sake ;-) haha! Xx Peace ( liberating and very challenging )
You have my prayers. I came from an Episcopal background, and then I left church altogether. After several years of studying the New Age movements, I rediscovered Christ while in college, and not in the way of the Orthodox. No, sir. I, as one of my Greek Orthodox friends, became one of them "raging Protestants," and "was saved." WHAT A MESS!
Now, I'm so happy to say that I'm an Orthodox Christian, and still learning and growing by the Grace of God. I took the name Anna on April 5, 1987, exactly 2 years to the day after I had begun my conversion. Christ is still changing me, and I hope I don't disappoint him, even though I'm a miserable sinner. I know He will never stop loving me as long as I keep my "eyes on the prize."
Being totally blind from birth, I consider myself quite capable of getting around, however, I'm about to retire my fourth Guide Dog. Please pray for me to be able to train and graduate with a fifth Guide, because I don't get out as much anymore. I suffer from Trigeminal Neuralgia, and it keeps me from enjoying life as much and as independently as I'd like. Nevertheless, I am praying for Infared Laser Treatment, so I can get off all the meds I'm on, because I miss traveling and showing the world that blind people are able to function as well as sighted people can. We just do things differently. I've been unable to work since 2007, and I miss Dialogue-in-the-Dark, a job I loved, along with a career as a Massage Therapist. If this treatment works as well as it does on 90% of other patients with the rare form of this condition, I can stop taking most of the medicines I'm on, and I'd love to be able to get out and travel again. I've been to the U.K. twice now, and I lived in France for two years, and I dearly miss it.God willing, you'll find this Holy faith to fulfill you as much as I have been fulfilled. I couldn't have gotten through the past 30 years of my life without Christ, Jesus and His Mother. I also have so many of the Saints to thank. God Bless!

I agree. Your salvation is not on Auto-Pilot once you accept the lord as your savior.You just don't kick back and say well i did my part and now Jesus has my back and everything is fantastic.
Getting saved is the easy part. It’s the discipleship that takes a lifetime of honest commitment which is hard.
Humility with tears, Holy Mother of God Theotokos comfort and protection of the people. Jesus prayers..
A journey that began with studying Austrian economics has brought me here - and I'd forgotten how it started until this speaker mentioned "praxis" about 25 min in. Human action : the fundamental building block of economics, if you want to understand econ truthfully and without the distortions of viewing it from within the current paradigm. Econ led me to an understanding of 'value,' and value showed me some parts of an unseen world, and pursuing the unseen world led me to read parts of the sacred books of various religions - the Bible, of course, and the Koran, and the Dao de Qing (I know, my spelling is off), and some others to a lesser degree. What's the point? I have no idea, but I can't stop.
Thank you so much for this lecture by Kevin Allen so delicately and intricately put .....I know there is so much depth to the Orthodox teachings and you touched on so much that was recognisable to my soul put in words. think upon. Thank you, so much to think upon and to absorb. Our Father made us intellectually, spiritually and intricately beautiful.

I love Kevin Allen, but the camera angle changes are brutal. It's distracting.
Distracting and completely unnecessary. Someone trying to be much more sophisticated than their equipment and/or skills.
What is the point of switching views with each clause of the presentation?
If there is no NEED for a camera change it contributes nothing positive it just makes it distracting and looks amateurish.
After 10 minutes, I just quit watching.....far too frenetic to watch.

I'm confused. didn't st paul write that although asceticism requires severe bodily disciple it is useless in conquering a person's evil desires. ....
St. Paul referred in [1 Timothy 4:8] to the "bodily exercise" in its secular meaning (i.e. gymnastics), not to the ascetic effort that has a spiritual goal.

35:00 this idea of making oneself healthy enough to be saved is curious (and I'm orthodox just not with this hammered out). It's like the judgment fire will burn away all those not healthy enough.
Since the bible puts it as if that fire is for burning away the impurities, I have always had the image of refining metal, but the there was no good metal in the lump. I just thought of the analogie of getting gold out of fool's gold.

You need to learn what an idol is. Using terms you don't understand makes you appear less than intelligent.
Catmatix when someone is in the dark you don’t call them names. You help them find the light.
Before you speak any word for this matter you should read a list 5 years to educate yourself, because you are so far from Truth.
Since now of these others told you the difference, and Idol is something that is worshiped and goes through particular rituals, and depicts things that are in heaven. These are paintings of people as they appeared on earth. They were meant to be a way for humans to control their god, to get the things they wanted, like good harvests and what not.
Before the bible was made in the 1500, and when most people were not literate, pictures told a thousand words, so these icons tell the stories in the bible in a visual way.
There is a whole lot more, so if you want to find out, look for the Lord of Spirits podcast which is essentially dealing with all the trivai in the Old testament that isn't generally taught in church.

B Gail they have always been historically one church, the bishops of Rome and the east (modern day orthodox) created the Bible and formed the early church; they share a history to the beginning of Christianity, apostolic succession that traces to the original disciples and St. Paul. They are not “joining” they are returning to unity.

The Greeks would have to schism first to do that. Theyre the only ones who want to.
