  • On January 23rd, 2018 at 1:32 a.m. PST a 7.9 earthquake struck 278 kilometres southeast of Kodiak Alaska triggering a Tsunami alert along the west coast of Alaska and British Columbia.
At 2:15 a.m. a broadcast intrusive alert was sent to TV and Radio stations over the Alert Ready or NAAD emergency broadcast system.
This is what it sounded like on radio
station CJAV, 93.3 The Peak in Port Alberni, British Columbia .
Fortunately, most of the displacement on the ocean floor was horizontal not vertical and a large wave did not arrive.
    We got very lucky.
The alert was canceled at 4:52 a.m.

Ngl this alarm sounds a bit scarier than the normal Canada Alert Ready alarm

It sounds like they replaced the high pitched tone from Alert Ready with the dual tone sound from the American EAS

I had no idea all that was going on while I was sleeping in Nanaimo. Glad everyone’s ok and no damage done.

Of course, Zone E, the Georgia Basin, wasn't in the alert.

there was a lot of traffic on Highway 4 that night - evacuations from the west coast of the island I believe.

Why does alert ready have a different voice in each proveince.

I've wondered that as well. Each province has it's own emergency coordination center that originates the messages so I'm going to guess at some point in each province they listened to the voices available and just picked the one they each liked..

If you loook at the usgs site the time the earthquake started and the tsunami was issued 2= f..ing hours later the bc government system sends out a warning 2 hours later what a joke
Bc government system is disgraceful. Good thing nothing happened other wise a lot of dead people
