I have this board and it’s great, it was between that and the retro ripper from lost. I ran into a guy after surfing that had a 5’7” rocket wide and he said the board just couldn’t get speed but probably rider error. He tried to sell it and no one wanted it. IMO it rippes for me so I’ll keep it
Great surfing, some really good turns on that board. I have the swallow tail version in Spinetek and it absolutely flies. I have surfed it way overhead BUT the wave must be fatter and flatter. Does not like hollow waves like you mentioned. Mostly ride it with 2+1 using the AMK fins.
Looks great for our local waves. Some nice spinny moves there on the "disc" surprised to hear you were using L fins...looking forward to seeing more CI reviews
Great review Wooly, it really helped me make an informed decision on what board to buy to get me back in the water after many years. Should be perfect for the conditions on the Sunshine Coast, Qld, thanks 👍
Bosh smashing it bru surfing really well. I personally love CI can't believe it's your first! It won't be your last now! I'd love to surf that I've still got a really nice condition dumpster diver simply the best board for me. Interested you mention the tail being similar
@@WoolyTV Nice work re helping SurfAid great organization! I liked your surfing on the DHD Phoenix in small waves as well, it just released in EPS in a Swallow Tail, it would be great to see a review on that, awesome reviews Thankyou!
Really want this board, they got one in my dims at my local shop but I’m stuck between this and a RNF 96. I get very diff boards, but both will do the same in my quiver as step down/grovelers. Really leaning to the RNF 96 as I’ve never owned any of the Lost RNF models and everyone’s loving the 96 it seems
I have this board in the spine tek and I’ve surfed it on well overhead punchy waves in the swallow tail it can handle it I saw Dane surf it in close to double overhead
sick review wooly, ripping those fun little lefts! How have you never ridden a CI?? I have the rocket 9 which has quite a pulled in swallow (maybe a little extra tail rocker too?) and that board does like to jam it up tight in the pocket, I bought it thinking it was more of a groveller like the rocket wide and actually didn´t like it until I surfed it in some overhead surf with a bit of push, then it came alive.
Yeah I know, weird! I just never had much of a relationship with the CI guys until now. JS have been looking after me for 10 years and when I was younger I was always hooked up with local shapers so I didn't ride many other brands. I have a bunch of CI's coming through now to review.....
for small wave, what do you think to use a twiny as the black baron?. Do you prefert a groveller to a twin?. That is the diferrence between Back Baron and the Rocket? ( I live in the mediterranean sea , mostly days are one meter smashy wave
Hi mate, yes there is a big difference to the way a twin surfs to a groveller. Really depends on how you prefer to surf. You are on the right track for small mushy waves, either a groveller of a twin with a nice wide tail and a flat rocker. Maybe a CI Rocket Wide or a JS Red baron would be a great option.
Hi Wooly - great channel & review. I'm 52 yo 170cm 77kg bloke looking for a versatile short board for intermediate surfer who doesn't get in the water enough, so I need paddle power. How would you compare the Rocket Wide to the Seaside (shorty not S&B)? cheers
Hi mate, If you want to surf a bit more in the pocket then the Rocket Wide would be the way to go. The Seaside is a super popular board as it is great in generating speed and glide in small surf but really does restrict the type of surfing you can do. Its great for going down the line and surfing very horizontal. Hope that helps
Excellent review as always. I' m roughly the same height and weight as you. Do you think going up to the 6'0 would compromise your Surfing to much cheers Brett 🤙
Hi mate I think I could ride the 6’0” quite easily. Really depends on what you are used to and your level of surfing but in small waves I think the 6’0” would be ok for someone similar build to me.
@@michaelono7335 where do you live? I know there are massive hold ups with the HYFIs since Covid. Are you dealing with them directly or through a shop?
Wooly TV through a shop... found out that Thailand just canceled my order out of no where and California didn't even know about it. On top of that, the guy in charge in california, "Brett" asked me why I'm getting a monsta 2020 in hifi...."it usually is PU". What does he care?? He's an idiot... next they said they will try and grab the hifi from Australia and said its on the way (about 4 months ago). Now they are saying it "might come"... WTF.... if they don't know, you should just say sorry and say you don't know... Not even 1 sorry from JS industries. Too bad, their boards are really good....
Looking at getting a step up from my rocket wide swallow 5'10" which I love. Right now I have a 6'1" Phantom 34 L and a local shaper 6'1" 33L..... neither of which I like that much for that 4-7' range. Phantom feels kind of chunky local shapers tail is pulled in and likes going straight...... I want something that can handle that 4-7 beach break..... There are a few boards im looking at a 6'0 monsta 2020 32 L a 5'11" happy everyday 32 L 6'1 OG flyer 34L..... I just really love my rocket wide and didnt realize what it was to have something you really gel with and now want that for my upper ranges. Any ideas/
Hi mate, if you love the Rocket Wide then I would probably go the Happy Everyday. Its sort of got the RW feel but more rocker and a pulled in tail so it works really well in the wave range you are looking at.
Hard because I didn't ride either in EPS. I think Rocket Wide was better in smaller surf and if the waves were flat where as the Phoenix surfed a little better as the waves were a touch bigger and steeper. Would really depend on what sort of waves you mainly surf. Hope that helps
Sorry mate, I somehow missed this one! Very hard to go past the JS Xero maybe in the Easy Rider DIM's. Im just about to finish the review and its been great.
I was waiting on a HYFI 2.0 Xero to land so I could review that BUT there is now a delay on the HYFI’s so JS are rushing me through a PU. As soon as it lands I will get the review done.

hi Wooly, congratulations for your videos so useful, you are surfing so well with this board, as in another video that you surprised me is that of js big baron, I ask you for advice, I own a pyzalien2, how would you compare it with rocket wide squash? I'm looking for a good board for small waves, versatile, loose and fast, do you have any preferences for some boards that you found particularly good? age weight and height similar to yours, thanks in advance
HI mate I find the Pyzalien 2 to work well in waves shoulder high and above. The Rocket Wide is really good in smaller wavs and better in waves that have flat sections in them. Another board that went well in similar conditions was the DHD Phoenix. Would the RW replace your P2 - no. Would it be a good addition and work better than the P2 in small waves - absolutely.
Will definitely buy this board, thanks for the review !
