    My father, Stanley Rohner, was killed in a helicopter accident while stationed here in Dec 78. I am taking my family here for the first time next month and also visiting his crash site in Karlstadt. Thanks for sharing this video, its nice to see the town. I was only 2 at the time of his accident, so I have never even had the opportunity to see where my family lived.

    I'm glad people are watching and enjoying this video. I appreciate all the kind comments. It was quite an emotional day for me driving through the former Peden Barracks. The memories flooded back as I drove the streets and described things to my daughter, who was with me. As an Army Brat, I never really had a hometown, but I have always kind of considered Wertheim to be my adopted hometown.

      It's 2016, and I'm doing the same thing you're doing. I'm here with my fiance, and I'm sure it'll be quite an emotional time when I go through it tomorrow. I'm glad you got to visit this place again. Sadly, I don't remember anyone that I went to school with as an elementary student. I lived in Wertheim from 85-91.

    Wow, what a video blast from my past. I lived here 81-84 during HS years when my dad was stationed here. We lived close to the elementary school climbed those stairs to get to the bus early mornings to go to Wurzburg AHS. When I first got here it was a rock bus and soul bus then some stuff happened and we got split to girl bus and boy bus with parents having bus duty 😂😂. My dad was none to happy for that. I remember watching the movie "The Day After" at school and being horrified. Those early morning drills. Spent alot of time at the movies, worked at the officers club after school and the nursery. This video brought back lots of memories. I didn't see the red phone booth at the entrance- I remember calling family back in the states. Fond memories of laying in the fields watching the fireworks, eating early breakfast at the mess hall on mornings I helped my brother with his newspaper route. Thank you for sharing this video. Great memories!!

    Thanks a bunch for posting this Dave! I was there June 89'-Dec 91' with A Btry 4/27th FA. Rockets Away Sir! Sudden Impact! Place still looks the same...yet different. The archway, 72nd Brigade HQ, the commissary/class VI, the chow hall, theatre, even the old bank/atm right across from our tiny PX. We had to take the bus to Wurzburg to go to "the Big PX" and it had a Burger KIng. I would bring back sacks full of burgers and triple my money selling them to the guys that hung out in their barracks rooms all the time and didn't want to get out. I arrived there as a buck private at 19 years old and was completely blown away that we not only had a soda machine in the barracks, but right next to it was a converted Pepsi Machine that sold Bud heavy and Bud LIght for 75cents a can! NO ID required, it was legal! Rofl. Awesome awesome awesome man. Thanks again!!!

    WWWWWWWOW!!!!!!!!!! I am completely overwhelmed with joy and happiness in seeing your video Mr. Dave Harris!! Thank You so much for taking time to post this incredible video on youtube. I was Stationed on PEDEN BARRACKS from October 1990 to around May 1992. U.S. Army 13 Bravo Field Artillery Cannon Crewmember. Back then Artillery men Served on M 110 Howitzer also referred to as "8 INCH" This place will ALWAYS be very special to me. TTTTTTTTTons of memories from this place. I was their when my Unit received Deactivation Orders. At first i had no clue what that meant because i was a young 19 year old Man. Once i learned that this place was shutting down and i would be receiving orders to return back to U.S. to another Military Base... yeah, the thought of leaving this very special place crushed me!!! Right outside the main Gate across the street use to be my favorite German Restaurant. I would go their every Friday night after lifting weights to buy a bunch of fresh, hot, very tasty German food. I would always buy extra German food and bring back to my barracks room on 2nd floor. I had the most incredible view out hhhhhuge double window that i always opened up and just enjoyed the night time view of the Castle across the river located on another mountain.... Sorry for any mis spellings. I survived 4 strokes in brain so my writing is not that good. Once again THANK YOU for taking time to make this video and posting on youtube!!!!!!!!! GOD BLESS, U.S. ARMY RETIRED 1989 -2016

    Our step Dad was stationed there 78-80 as a Huey pilot. My little sister went to the elementary school right by our building. We lived on the 4th floor. My older brother and I went to Wurzburg High where he played football for the wolves. I played football for the Wertheim steelers. I also worked the summer hire program at the commissary at age 14. Enjoyed shooting at the Rod and Gun club, many hours at the DYA, our trip to Austria and Italy with the DYA, lots of movies at the base theatre and friends, some that I can remember are Kevin Hardin, Ryker Burrows, Charlie Earl and others that I can not recall their names. The video was great. Thanks

Wonderful Memories!! ❤ Thanks Dave for this video...So much has changed. No way was it that many buildings when I was there. I can recall walking many times that entire base. Glad to see I'm not the only one that likes to ride through Peden Barracks. I was stationed there from 76-85 and loved it. Lots of memories. I think my last DCC was LTC Kervorkian - I see the name below - drove with him to Wuerzburg one time and we sighted my first SMLM vehicle - LTC K put his MP hat on. It was great. Worked in Bldg #2 on the right in front of the MP Station. Peden RPC Team not getting out except thru us! Still here in Germany, got to close all the Army Bases. I remember the helicopter crash in '78. That was down the road past Vokenrot in a big field where the power lines hung pretty low. Everyone had to go out and look for parts, not a very good situation. Sorry for your loss. Two others also died in the crash if I remember correctly. LTC Raymond Roe brought change to 3/35th LOL, wow. Thanks for the video.

    Spent most of 63 in Wertheim with my Dad, XO of 72d FA Grp. Attended HS in Wuerzburg. Seems like we spent most of our time on buses going to school. I remember some long walks into town when we got bored. Loved living in Germany. Returned in 71 on my own set of orders, but didn't manage to revisit Wertheim.

    • @GetRealBaby
      @GetRealBaby 2 роки тому

      Hi...what grade were you in in '63? I, too, remember the long bus trips to and from school. Our German bus driver used to growl aloud a lot whenever he thought we were doing something we shouldn't, like everything. ha! Did you ever get with a bunch of kids and sled down Wertheim hill into town, have a few beers at a local hoffbrau, and then walk all the way back up the hill only to decide to sled down again? Hard to believe I had that much energy in my youth. But it was awesome. Did you visit the AYA often? I set pins at the bowling alley until they got auto pinsetter in. Bagged groceries at the PX, too. Who did you hang with in '63? Maybe I know someone you know. Also, have you visited the Wurzburg Wolves web site?

      @@GetRealBaby now isn't this interesting? Running across not 1 but 3 people from Wertheim in the last few years. I have also recently found Donna Moseley and she put me in touch with Sim Smith if you remember them both Class of 65. We moved to Wertheim in the spring of 63 from Bad Kissingen while I was finishing 9th grade. By Thanksgiving, we moved again to Ft. Monroe, VA.
      I looked for you in the WAHS 63-64 yearbook, but couldn't find you. Sim remembers but thinks you may have been a year ahead- Class of 63. He would like to contact you.
      So, I never sledded down the hill to that gasthaus, but we walked down plenty of times. The bartender/ owner thought we were nuts because of what we ordered. I think cognac and coke was my choice.
      I have nothing but, good memories of dependent life in Germany.
      And, yes, I'm aware of the WAHS website and upcoming reunion. Not many in our early 60s era coming it appears.
      Thanks for reaching out and let us hear from you again.

    • @GetRealBaby
      @GetRealBaby 2 роки тому

      @@mikealexander5830 Yes, it's interesting. I think Donna Moseley was friends with Linda Henderson and Claudia Vic, both sophomores I think. And I do remember Sim Smith. He and Anne Marie Fabrizio hooked up after graduating hs. I was in touch with her and her brother Charles (Charlie) who was a junior in '63, the year I left Wertheim. Wait...I believe Donna married Kyle (forget his last name). I wasn't close with either, but Kyle was shot in the eye by Bill Beckham back in '62, lost sight in that eye due to blood filling his eye, but has regained some sight years later. It was my pellet pistol Bill used to carelessly shoot Kyle. I tossed the gun away after that incident. I'm not in the yearbook because of choice, never liking my picture being taken, but I am in a few pictures of the '63 football team in which Dennis Hewit (sp?) was quarterback, Dave Majors middle linebacker, and Bill Weiteinger (sp?) played end I think. Bill passed away a few years ago. He was a wonderful guy, and had a sense of humor that made me constantly smile whenever around him. He had a 5-o'clock shadow in the 10th grade, the only boy in school with a 5-o'clock shadow beard. So many stories, so little time to tell them, and few people to find them interesting. Would love to chat with Sim Smith or anyone else you're in touch with, including Donna. Is she still married to Kyle? What a beautiful girl she was! And may still be. If you were there in '63, you must have visited the AYA, correct? Tracy Edgerly painted a stunning portrait mural on one of the wall in one of the back rooms. It featured many of the kids she knew who hung out at the AYA, You could probably get a lot of money for a picture of that mural. It was painted over after I left. Thanks for the note. Good chatting with you! mrmsje at gmail dot com

I had some great times, some great memories and I served with a wonderful group of guys. Thanks again for this wonderful video.

I use to run the projectors till I played jimmy Hendrix version of the national anthem. Post commander didn't have a sense of humor lol also was the main gate guard for 2 years.
    What a great place and so much fun. loved going into town to the guest houses some back then had signs saying no GI's lol they saw to many john Wayne movies.
    Thanks for showing it what a blast from past.

    Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I think i spent more of my freetime downtown then on the base. It was sad to see the rear of the base so developed. I also remember the ball fields and the Hawk missile sites. I would go jogging often on my own past them so peaceful since it was open fields then pine trees by the ammo dump area. When you mentioned the commissary i spent alot of money there. If my memory is correct a few times a month they would restock the music cassettes/tapes and i would snap them up before they were gone.

    I was stationed here in 84-86. I believe the building at 7:06 of video is the MP building, but not sure. Houses to the right at 7:22 of video were the location of Alpha Battery 25th FA 3rd ID headquarters and barracks which have since been torn down and replaced with residential housing. Last house on the right at 7:27 of video would have been the location of my barracks. The center quadrangle that they drove around is where we did PT every morning. The building at 7:29 of the video was the German military barracks. I remember going over there to buy beer out of their vending machines.

Cave deep in the forest below Peden past the tierheim and trash pit, endless fruit trees, Life was Good!

  • @GetRealBaby

    Enjoyed the video. Did you ever visit the AYA, which was down the hill a bit from the hospital, across the street from a German(?) power plant. The plant had a huge smokestack that we once as teenagers in '61 aimed a pipe filled with gunpowder from dozens of firecrackers. Once filled with gunpowder, we stuffed rocks into the pipe and I set it off with a fuze from a string of Ladyfingers. What a blast it made, and the rocks bounced off the smokestack as though hit with a huge shotgun. But the AYA was a small building with a dance floor, a small kitchen, and a ping pong and pool table that entertained us for hours. Major Burgner was the youngest major serving in Germany at the time. His daughter, a sophomore at Wurzburg high, was the girlfriend of Tex Castenada, a sergeant's son. Tex was a style-setter, a legend in his own time. When everyone was wearing penny loafers, Tex painted the soles of his loafers white, which had all the other boys painting their soles white (black loafers with white rims more or less). Not long after starting that trend, Tex set a new style by forgoing the white for a gold trim on the soles. Then red, then white again, back to gold, then yellow and blue. What a guy! Long story. At time stamp 10:04 in your video, you can see our 4-story building on the left. We lived there on the top floor next to the street. Across the street lived Tracy Edgerly, a senior in 1962, who was the most interesting senior I had ever met or seen. Long story. I dated Ulla Saarela in my senior year, another long beautiful story. We went undefeated in football that 1962/1963 school year. I made All-League, but only because of my size and crazy abandoned play. Got ejected from our last game of the season against Heidelberg for a face-mask call. Long story. Poor kid. I nearly pulled his head off his shoulders.

      @@harrisdave BTW, for some reason the army flew Audie Murphy out to Wertheim for a photo-op, which gave everyone a chance to get his autograph. I remember standing face to face with this war hero, MOH recipient, short man with a great smile, and I remember how he had make-up on to cover (I'm guessing) his face full of freckles. I mean, he had zillions of freckles. It wasn't something I expected, nor did I expect to see him with make-up. But I got his autograph on a paper plate, which I kept for years and somehow lost in all my travels.

    I watched the video because I was looking at Google Maps and could not find the runway. I was with the 71st Aviation Co, from '75-'77. I recognized some of the buildings.
