I just quit working for GM a few months ago and have a degree in Mechanical Engineering. As someone who has seen the inner workings, I will NEVER, EVER buy a GM product. Just purchased a Toyota Tacoma instead.
Being a life long Honda fan and owner it was hard walking away from the Ridgeline but lack of manual transmission and goofy looks brought me to the Tacoma. Initially I was alarmed by the problems they were having with the Tacoma but I took a chance and bought a 2019 TRD Sport 4x4. 3 months later and 6k miles it has been pretty awesome. I have a manual so the trans issue was never a problem. I live in the Tacomaworld forum and can report the auto transmission problem is no longer an issue. It is a very nice truck and they still sell a quarter million per year so people must be happy with them. Not to mention, it has the highest resale value of any vehicle in history.

@@rcdogmanduh4440 I was going for the manual too, but also was talked into the Auto by the salesman/wife/kids/(if the dog could talk he probably would have as well). No regrets for me though. I love that I can lock the automatic into a gear, so I'm good.

Only by test driving and then looking carefully at discussions on the actual issues with a thoughtful eye reveal more relevant info. Even then it takes real seat time to learn any good vehicle. The bad ones are immediately obvious. I bought my daughter a 2019 SR5 with 40k miles. Drove it NJ to WA, over the Rockies and Cascades. Love it. Runs strong and stable. Handles well. Comfortable but feels, looks and drives like a truck should be, vs a crossover, SUV or car. Everything works. Seat is comfortable after many hours. Plenty of power to cruise Montana at 90 mph, accelerate up mountain passes. Tranny did not hunt. Mileage not class leading but good enough. Regular fuel. I like the seating position! I’d like to have one for myself. I am 59, have had all kinds of vehicles as big as a Chevy suburban, minivans, mazda3, speed3, Audi A6 turbo diesel, A3 wagon, Saabs old and older. Rented everything. I own 5 Alfas, vintage an Stelvio and 4C, and a CX5. Will sell the cx5 and Stelvio for the truck. And I love the Stelvio it is amazing and reliable. But the truck fits my fishing and skiing and carrying Alfa tire sets, towing, lifestyle. And I am a car and Alfa nut job. The Stelvio is amazing, the engineering and handling superb. Dealers suck but they don’t work on my cars. So my bar is high. I’ll get a 2019 SR5 and modify to my off road spec. Would love a MT but bad left knee, I’ll save the clutch for the 1974 Spider and 1982 GTV6. The Taco is so solid and is a real truck. Don’t want a turbo engine (no Ranger), don’t want it to be styled inside and out like a car (Colorado, Ridgeline) don’t want to drive on a highway like a pig (Gladiator), take up huge space (all full size trucks), need real off road and 4x4 capability (no crossovers), and proven systems that don’t break. Don’t need 500hp. Don’t need a cheaply built Nissan. My daughter loves it. I had built her a 2005 SportTrac, upgraded and lifted suspension, chipped v6 with stainless exhaust, XL with LSD, nice 33” tires K02, etc. Totaled by a red-light runner. The Taco is a big upgrade.
curious what kind of driving you do? Any time I take mine somewhere with big hills or high elevation the truck is always searching for gears and generally rides like crap on cruise control. I've also had it throw P0171/0174 codes at high elevation.
@@benjaminogle11 it is a year later and I have just over 87000 miles on mine. I drive over passes that are 6000 feet or so. When I tow I always use the ECT power button while towing. Ours doesn't have this searching symptom. It has been great. I have driven from north of Seattle Washington to Parker Arizona and back. Driven to Montana, Southern Idaho and all over Washington state. Sorry you have this problem.

You nailed it. My 2016 Tacoma still has a less than optimal transmission.. it's not smooth, it's not bad, it shifts too early and makes the truck feel slow... but at 50k miles - not one true issue with the truck. I never complained to Toyota about the shifting - I just drove it. I never brought it to the shop for a fix ( did have the fist transmission reflash done during one oil change interval - it was recommended) I learned to love the truck. It rides great, it drives great. It shifts so - so. I am confidence now that the truck will last at least 200K miles without any issues whatsoever. You nailed it.
I have a 2017 TRD sport 6' 2" bed 4-door automatic. Absolutely LOVE my truck. Reliable, great on fuel, hauls my boat with easy, my ATV fits perfect in the bed and I really like the versatility of the back seats being able to fold them down and having a large hard plastic surface area for anything you need to take with you. I took it to my Toyota dealership in the first 10,000kms to get the ECM flash for the transmission shifting, not a single issue with this vehicle at all and I have 70,000kms on mine. TRD ftw!

I have a 2016 automatic 4 cyl. BUT, the owners manual neglected to include this important info: To get up a minor incline do the following: 1)Press the ECT button. 2) Put trans in 3rd gear. 3) Press the gas peddle about 1/2 way to the floor 4) Stay to the right so people can pass 5) Be patient, in about 10 minutes you'll hit 30 mph. But don't fret, the engine will last many thousands of miles and be super reliable.
Transmission problems are nonexistent on the manual transmission model. I bought the manual mainly for the fun of it but the dependably of is a huge perk. My 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD off road just hit its one year birthday it has had zero problems. I have only put 5,000 on it.
Jaboc F what tires are you running? My ‘18 trd off road gets between 17-24 mpg wherever I go, although I run wranglers for summer and Cooper st Maxx’s for winter....this past winter was 14-17 mpg with the coopers.
Yikes I’m running the stock size highway terrains and I average 15-17. I upgraded from a 2003 3.4 5 speed Tacoma with a 3” lift and 33” bfg mud terrains and I averaged 14.5 with that... I’m a little worried to put any other tires on haha. I also drive like a maniac sometimes too so that doesn’t help much
@@Kaizer357 i am running the stock tire's. I have been getting 19-20 city, running at 65-70 down the highway getting 21. Going to and frome work a 2 mile round trip i am getting 14mpg. Towing a 3,000lb camper only tanken it on a 100 mile camp trip so far got 12mpg.

Yes sir he is. He needed a work truck so I gave it to him. Hated to part with it. It got me through school twice with zero issue. In 2016, this same friend and I put 40, 000 on it going fishing, Dallas to any where in the Southern Texas coast, as far as South Padre Island (appx 650 miles one way). There was a recall on the ball joints in 2010 but I did not know about it and the right one collapsed on me in 2015. I replaced both front ones for $500 part and labor. Clutch master cylinder went out at 330, 000 miles because I am too lazy to flush the system for years. I'd bought it for $30 and replaced it myself. The original battery was out in 2011 and original serpentine belts were hanging on threads and replaced in 2013. I stopped getting regular maintenance at 200,000 miles. Last time I changed my transmission oil was at 175000 miles. Those were the issues I had that I could remember and all of them were my faults. I intended to drive it until it goes out on me but my buddy loved it and he liked doing maintenance himself so I let him have it. After I gave him this 2000 SR5 I'd bought a 2018 Tacoma Sport and sunk it on a fishing trip then recently bought a 2019 Tacoma Off Road. I have to admit, the new ones are not as good as the older ones. I have GPS issues with the 2018 and the 2019 had break dust covering the front wheels for the first 4000 miles. It's all good now. I miss the old time when Mexican folks roll down their window at the stop light and ask if I would sell my truck for 5 grands.
In my opinion, JD Power reviews and studies are typically open to the highest bidder. I typically place little or no credence in anything they say or any "awards" they offer.
I’ve put 25xxx miles on my 18 and haven’t had it a year yet. I haul material in it, take it off road and the traveling back and forth to work. It’s been by FAR the most reliable truck I’ve ever owned.
2009 Tacoma with 175000 miles. Never had any issue. Still runs like the day I bought it. Best truck ever built. I will never own anything else as long as I can drive.
I have a good friend who is a 100% Ford man. He has a job where he drives Toyota TRD’s for off road demos. He said that he is amazed that something can go right out of the showroom without modifications and handle the beating they are exposed to. Yet to have an issue with any of them he says.
2016 tacoma trd offroad on 33's with a 6speed manual and 78k miles I have had 0 issues with it. 85 miles a day to and from work and using 4wd every day getting up my driveway. Other than 18 mpg and absolutly 0 bottom end torque I love it.
The 2016 to 2019 Tacoma does have more issues than previous years but it's still better than any other midsize truck on the road. The issues that it does have are minor.
Just bought a 2019 Toyota Tacoma this past weekend. So close to buying a Chevy Colorado. But I am glad I went with the Tacoma. Looking forward to many years of driving a dependable truck.
Have a 17 sr 4x4 since new. This article is solid about the trans flash issue. I have not had my trans updated and the best way to describe it is like the trans is tired and slow to respond. I have adjusted my driving to this and have gotten used to it. Aside from that it has been mechanically solid aside from 1 engine stall and it's at 31000 miles currently. All in all its a very reliable car, just hesitates so drive accordingly.
@@jeevang7853 my dad did, considering he worked in NJ for Toyota and lives in PA. Great gas mileage. Also we worked that truck just as hard as any other with no issues. He also doesn't need to compensate so there's that too....
Most of our cars from late 90s and early 2000s are still on the road and reliable. Fast forward to 2014 and newer and theres all sorts of quality issues on these newer trucks (regardless of brand). Many of the probs r these new 7+ speed transmissions. I prefer a good 6 speed.
Just bought a used 2019 with 40k miles. Drove it cross country. No issues with tranny or shifting. Plenty of power. Cruised easily at 90mph. Truck drives smoothly. SR5 with v6.
It is very indeed reliable when members around the world have over 100k MILES and 0 issues..theres already a member with 200k on a 3rd gen and has had 0 issues, rear ujoint and a serpertine belt...Even my 17 OR is having 0 issues and i abuse mine like crazy and im only at 42k
2019 TRD OR V6 Manual transmission, ZERO issues with my truck, outside a sensor replacement for the PCS in the grill. Blast to drive, crazy reliable, great investment.
I owned a 2006 Frontier for 10 years. There's not enough room to list all the issues I had with it, some major. I now own a 2016 Tacoma. I have not had a single issue or recall. I love it and will be buying another one. The only complaint I had was the Tacoma was pressed into the tailgate and wasn't very visible. I bought raised 3D letters for this on Amazon and they look great!
That's new still , my 98 ranger has 318k miles it's a 4 cyl with 8 spark plugs and 5 speed manual nothing out of regular work ,timing belt ,alternator, oil every 3k m , brakes , tires
I’m a professional auto tech over 35 years in the field ....... been with CHEVY,TOYOTA and HONDA ....All major manufactures have there own problems for one ☝🏻 I’ve seen it all in my career! TOYOTA is and always be the best light truck that can run high miles over 100,000 miles and keep going without any major engine failures do to there close tolerances ........mind you however like all light trucks suffer HP and Torque......you can’t load them up and expect pulling power like a full size pick up!!!
JD Power is "fake news" and is a "pay to play" organization. My 2010 OR 4WD Tacoma with 137K miles only had a worn $125 transmission mount replaced. Tacoma's are tough as nails. The resale value is proof. No one would pay top dollar for a truck that has a reputation of junking out in a few years.
2017 Tacoma Trd Sport. 6 speed manual Issues 1. Detent ball would expand on a long drive and not allow me to shift out of that gear. 2. Throwout bearing at 25,000 miles 3. Another throw out bearing at 34,000 miles 4. Coolant leak from as service advisor said “coolant by pass” I love the truck but it makes it really hard not to hate it.
as a tacoma owner, i can say that the transmission is a little quirky. that said, a software isnt huge issue. its a 15 minute fix to flash. its not like they have to tear the transmission open. what interests me when i think if "reliablity" is, am i going to be stranded? None of the Tacoma's issues are of that nature.

With my experience There are no reliability issue. The tacoma will not leave you stranded. I personally love the 15 and older simply cause I think they drive better but either way the tacoma is a solid truck hands down.
I'll stick with my outdated, reliable, Frontier Pro 4x. I'm on my third Frontier (2013 with 167k, 2016 with 202k, and now my 2019 Pro 4x). All three. No issues. I love the Tacoma but damn....I just like a simple truck. "Shrugs"

@CaseNTech if Nissan sticks with the design, I'll keep buying them. If they just introduce new colors, new wheels, interior updates etc. I think they can squeeze a few more years out of this design. I looked into a Tacoma, but the one I looked at cost $9k more than my fully loaded 19 Pro 4x. I sat in the Tacoma, and I didn't know what 60% of the buttons did lol wayyyy to complicated for my taste. 😂
Honestly, NOBODY should be having any issues with any vehicle until they're getting to that 60-70K mile range. By issue, I mean It is time to change break pads, turn rotors, or do anything that just needs to be replaced. Maybe tires. To be honest, I foresee replacing my stock Wrangler kevlar tires at about 50-60K miles. They're good tires, just not for a serious off-roader.
@@reesedaniel5835 i traded in my Tacoma for a Kia Stinger and never looked back. The automatic transmission was crap and even a tune didn't make it much better. The gearing was not great.
I would be curious to know if quality varies depending on where it is built? For example 4Runner is built in Japan, Tacoma’s are built in Texas and Mexico and my beloved Venza in Kentucky which I must admit does have a few fit and finish issues that I would dare say might not be there if it was designed and built in Japan
...other issues were a leaking rear third break light on the cab, which can only be removed by dropping the headliner... I don't care for having a sealed transmission on my truck either. However, on a brighter note, not many people are complaining much about the 2.7L 4 cylinder Tacoma in the 3rd Gen... still a proven platform if people are truly looking for overall reliability... rocking a the original trans for the 4 cylinder too... not the one paired with the V6 everyone seems upset about.
BTW...I own a 2017 Tacoma SR5 with tow package and can pull a 25' boat that weighs nearly 4500 lbs with no issues whatsoever. Will be trading in for a 2020 Tacoma SR5 soon.

A friend of mine has a 2016 Tacoma and hated the transmission.. he got it flashed and said it made a world of difference... so if you’re having problems. Try that and see if it helps you.. he talked about it in the vid.
I have a 2017 Tacoma work truck with 65k miles, no problems, just regular oil changes, like many other Tacoma owner, so these ratings are totally unreliable.
Bought my 2008 Tacoma sr5 4 door for $19,6000, 30,000 miles. 2017 bought a new trd 4x4 premium pkg, $40,6000. Toyota gave me $5,000 off and $12,000 for my 2008, 200,000 miles on it. Do the math! My 2017 has no real issues and I love it! That being said, $$$.
I really love my 2012 Tacoma. Quad cab, long bed, 4x4. I have no problems and just love to drive it. This is as new as I will ever get. I don't really trust all these new bells and whistles.
You nailed it Robert. I had a 2008 Tacoma TRD Sport. I sold it and bought a new 2018 TRD OR and I did just what you said the first couple of months.I had to get used to the new one. Most of the gear hunting is 5th to 6th and back to 5th etc. If I'm not on the interstate I back out of the driveway, shift to S and up to 5th. This way the truck never goes into 6th gear.
That's what happens when you put an engine and transmission designed for a passenger car in a pickup truck... Pickup trucks are meant for low range power and torque. Not to be wrung out at 6k RPM to achieve results.
Political correctness aside, it's a legit question. Building a car requires more care than picking tomatoes, BUT, WHY would Toyota management allow their company's reputation to be ruined by a stupid workers?? If i trust Toyota vehicles, may as well trust Toyota managers to run the factory (and it's workers) properly.
2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4 Sport Double Cab Long Bed was built on 11/4/15 in Mexico and delivered to me in Bremerton, Wa. on 11/23/15. My truck now has 47,800+ miles as of 3/16/19. My truck had both the cam sensor and the leaking rear diff recalls done and has had one rear back up light bulb replaced at about 14,000 miles. No other issues...I love my truck and would buy it again.
Own a 2010 yoda rolla with zero problems and still runs like a champ. Have a 19 highlander and couldn’t be happier with it. Just went big and picked up a pro taco. I sleep well knowing all three are gona last.
This video was not about the 2009 Tacoma. Totally different drivetrain. All vehicles will differ in reliability between make, model, and year. Reliability 10 years ago has no bearing on today. I own a Lexus that needed a new transmission at 62k despite being dealer maintained since new. Does that mean all Lexus models are unreliable? Of course not. But that particular model had a well known transmission problem. It happens to all makes.
I bought a 2017 Tacoma, so far zero issues. I bought it because my last Tokyo’ was 11.5 years old and 129,000 traveled with ONE ISSUE (that happened after about 100k miles): The FM radio died. I only traded it in because I wanted a truck.
256k on my 07 Tacoma. Have only done oil changes, spark plugs, air filter, pads, rotors, and tires.. oh and a ujoint bearing last week. Haven't done any trans service for 130k, might be time to do it tho 😂 still shifts better then any GM off the lot.
I have 2019 TRD tocoma haven’t had a single problem with I have 32,000 miles but it has been very harsh miles I’m a frequent predator hunter and drive nothing but harsh hard roads.
I have to say my 2017 TRD off-road died on me at an intersection. Electrical went out catastrophic failure. Toyota changed out fuse buss and really didn’t narrow down the problem. I have been driving it for about a year now no problems. I don’t trust it like I have my past tacos but so far it’s been ok??
My 2017 is having similar issues. It started with the radio just turning off and back on. Today it completely shut down on the freeway. It restarted after but I had no power. Seemed like after that happened I noticed when I slowed down or stopped it shut off and restarted again. Probably going to take it to Toyota today. I haven't seen many other cases of this issue
I don't think problems have necessarily gone down in 2017-2019 on Carcomplaints, this is a normal trend (for most vehicles) as it takes time for issues to surface within the first three years.
You don't need to do deep dive I will give you a few examples. I am owner of 2018 Toyota Tacoma Off-Road. TONS of issues. Issue #1. Two months after driving car of dealer parking lot radar sensor started malfunctioning. Cruise control and collision braking system would randomly stop working. I would be driving on highway at 5.30 am (I go to work early) no cars and suddenly my brake warning would start flashing and the car started applying brakes ON HIGHWAY by itself. Finally after 8 months of continuous problems radar sensor recall was announced. Design flaw that exposes sensor to water and it malfunctions. Surprise surprise. Issue #2. Navigation constantly restarting during last winter. Issue #3. Stared 3 months ago my right turn signal flashing very fast on dashboard, I go out, there is no signal in front or on the side mirror and very faint signal in the back. Happens randomly, Went to dealer and.... dealer told me they can see error code for blinker and they see that the circuit is drawing too much current (shorting somewhere) but because they cannot reproduce issue I described in the dealership there is nothing they can do about it!!! So the error code is there, it is showing that the circuit in question is drawing too much current but they cannot do anything about it since they cannot reproduce the actual issue I described. Sorry I had to write it twice because when they told me that I could not believe it. Issue #4. Car does not want to turn off at night (happening randomly) instead it stays in accessory mode and beeps for key. I use to have 1998 Toyota Corolla when I was in grad school. It was extremely reliable. After that I owned, Subaru Legacy, Honda accord, BMW M3, Subaru Outback, Porsche 911 Turbo, Subaru Legacy (my wife). Currently my wife has 2018 Honda CRV, I have 2018 Toyota Tacoma and 2015 Nissan GTR. Toyota Tacoma is by far the MOST UNRELIABLE vehicle I have ever owned. I am very glad that Chevy came out with Colorado ZR2 (front lockers are sweet) and Jeep came with Gladiator. I replace my daily drivers every 4 years. Toyota will not see my money for a very very very long time if ever.
Another one showed up this weekend. Truck did not want to start. After few tries it started but sounded like it was not firing on all cylinders. Going back to the dealer .... again. So far Tacoma is the most unreliable vehicle I owned. This thing has 12k miles only. Very disappointed with Toyota.
I know of two Tacoma’s that have had early transmission failures. They are still 1000 times better then American pickups but the reliability has seem to go down hill
I have a 2013 TRD Sport DCLB with 213k and a lift, 37’s, re-geared, recovery, and armoured, air lockers etc.. it’s also my work truck. Tons of overlandjng trips with it as well, IMO the 2nd Gen Taco is KING!

"Initial quality" is meaningless anyway. I want to see them test my 92 Toyota for reliability, with over 300k miles.

2018 Tacoma TRD off road... I have 64k miles and use it for work in the oilfield. Lots of rough roads and haven't had a single issue

All the machine will break down at some point but the question is how long will it take and how often does it break down.
Being a life long Honda fan and owner it was hard walking away from the Ridgeline but lack of manual transmission and goofy looks brought me to the Tacoma. Initially I was alarmed by the problems they were having with the Tacoma but I took a chance and bought a 2019 TRD Sport 4x4. 3 months later and 6k miles it has been pretty awesome. I have a manual so the trans issue was never a problem. I live in the Tacomaworld forum and can report the auto transmission problem is no longer an issue. It is a very nice truck and they still sell a quarter million per year so people must be happy with them. Not to mention, it has the highest resale value of any vehicle in history.
Thanks for commenting. I was seeing the same thing about the auto trans issue being put to rest. It really does seem like Toyota will regain the top spot here in the next few years.

Only by test driving and then looking carefully at discussions on the actual issues with a thoughtful eye reveal more relevant info. Even then it takes real seat time to learn any good vehicle. The bad ones are immediately obvious.
I bought my daughter a 2019 SR5 with 40k miles. Drove it NJ to WA, over the Rockies and Cascades. Love it. Runs strong and stable. Handles well. Comfortable but feels, looks and drives like a truck should be, vs a crossover, SUV or car. Everything works. Seat is comfortable after many hours. Plenty of power to cruise Montana at 90 mph, accelerate up mountain passes. Tranny did not hunt. Mileage not class leading but good enough. Regular fuel. I like the seating position!
I’d like to have one for myself. I am 59, have had all kinds of vehicles as big as a Chevy suburban, minivans, mazda3, speed3, Audi A6 turbo diesel, A3 wagon, Saabs old and older. Rented everything. I own 5 Alfas, vintage an Stelvio and 4C, and a CX5. Will sell the cx5 and Stelvio for the truck. And I love the Stelvio it is amazing and reliable. But the truck fits my fishing and skiing and carrying Alfa tire sets, towing, lifestyle. And I am a car and Alfa nut job. The Stelvio is amazing, the engineering and handling superb. Dealers suck but they don’t work on my cars. So my bar is high. I’ll get a 2019 SR5 and modify to my off road spec. Would love a MT but bad left knee, I’ll save the clutch for the 1974 Spider and 1982 GTV6. The Taco is so solid and is a real truck. Don’t want a turbo engine (no Ranger), don’t want it to be styled inside and out like a car (Colorado, Ridgeline) don’t want to drive on a highway like a pig (Gladiator), take up huge space (all full size trucks), need real off road and 4x4 capability (no crossovers), and proven systems that don’t break. Don’t need 500hp. Don’t need a cheaply built Nissan.
My daughter loves it. I had built her a 2005 SportTrac, upgraded and lifted suspension, chipped v6 with stainless exhaust, XL with LSD, nice 33” tires K02, etc. Totaled by a red-light runner. The Taco is a big upgrade.

curious what kind of driving you do? Any time I take mine somewhere with big hills or high elevation the truck is always searching for gears and generally rides like crap on cruise control. I've also had it throw P0171/0174 codes at high elevation.
@@benjaminogle11 it is a year later and I have just over 87000 miles on mine. I drive over passes that are 6000 feet or so. When I tow I always use the ECT power button while towing. Ours doesn't have this searching symptom. It has been great. I have driven from north of Seattle Washington to Parker Arizona and back. Driven to Montana, Southern Idaho and all over Washington state. Sorry you have this problem.

You nailed it. My 2016 Tacoma still has a less than optimal transmission.. it's not smooth, it's not bad, it shifts too early and makes the truck feel slow... but at 50k miles - not one true issue with the truck. I never complained to Toyota about the shifting - I just drove it. I never brought it to the shop for a fix ( did have the fist transmission reflash done during one oil change interval - it was recommended) I learned to love the truck. It rides great, it drives great. It shifts so - so. I am confidence now that the truck will last at least 200K miles without any issues whatsoever. You nailed it.

I have a 2017 TRD sport 6' 2" bed 4-door automatic. Absolutely LOVE my truck. Reliable, great on fuel, hauls my boat with easy, my ATV fits perfect in the bed and I really like the versatility of the back seats being able to fold them down and having a large hard plastic surface area for anything you need to take with you. I took it to my Toyota dealership in the first 10,000kms to get the ECM flash for the transmission shifting, not a single issue with this vehicle at all and I have 70,000kms on mine. TRD ftw!

I have a 2016 automatic 4 cyl. BUT, the owners manual neglected to include this important info: To get up a minor incline do the following: 1)Press the ECT button. 2) Put trans in 3rd gear. 3) Press the gas peddle about 1/2 way to the floor 4) Stay to the right so people can pass 5) Be patient, in about 10 minutes you'll hit 30 mph. But don't fret, the engine will last many thousands of miles and be super reliable.

Transmission problems are nonexistent on the manual transmission model. I bought the manual mainly for the fun of it but the dependably of is a huge perk. My 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD off road just hit its one year birthday it has had zero problems. I have only put 5,000 on it.

My ‘18 trd off road gets between 17-24 mpg wherever I go, although I run wranglers for summer and Cooper st Maxx’s for winter....this past winter was 14-17 mpg with the coopers.
Yikes I’m running the stock size highway terrains and I average 15-17. I upgraded from a 2003 3.4 5 speed Tacoma with a 3” lift and 33” bfg mud terrains and I averaged 14.5 with that... I’m a little worried to put any other tires on haha. I also drive like a maniac sometimes too so that doesn’t help much
@@Kaizer357 i am running the stock tire's. I have been getting 19-20 city, running at 65-70 down the highway getting 21. Going to and frome work a 2 mile round trip i am getting 14mpg. Towing a 3,000lb camper only tanken it on a 100 mile camp trip so far got 12mpg.

Yeah running mudders will reduce mileage. If anything, go with Cooper M&S or AT3. They’re sorta soft tires but they’re amazing off road and on road tires

Yes sir he is. He needed a work truck so I gave it to him. Hated to part with it. It got me through school twice with zero issue. In 2016, this same friend and I put 40, 000 on it going fishing, Dallas to any where in the Southern Texas coast, as far as South Padre Island (appx 650 miles one way). There was a recall on the ball joints in 2010 but I did not know about it and the right one collapsed on me in 2015. I replaced both front ones for $500 part and labor. Clutch master cylinder went out at 330, 000 miles because I am too lazy to flush the system for years. I'd bought it for $30 and replaced it myself. The original battery was out in 2011 and original serpentine belts were hanging on threads and replaced in 2013. I stopped getting regular maintenance at 200,000 miles. Last time I changed my transmission oil was at 175000 miles. Those were the issues I had that I could remember and all of them were my faults. I intended to drive it until it goes out on me but my buddy loved it and he liked doing maintenance himself so I let him have it. After I gave him this 2000 SR5 I'd bought a 2018 Tacoma Sport and sunk it on a fishing trip then recently bought a 2019 Tacoma Off Road. I have to admit, the new ones are not as good as the older ones. I have GPS issues with the 2018 and the 2019 had break dust covering the front wheels for the first 4000 miles. It's all good now. I miss the old time when Mexican folks roll down their window at the stop light and ask if I would sell my truck for 5 grands.

I’ve put 25xxx miles on my 18 and haven’t had it a year yet. I haul material in it, take it off road and the traveling back and forth to work. It’s been by FAR the most reliable truck I’ve ever owned.
2009 Tacoma with 175000 miles. Never had any issue. Still runs like the day I bought it. Best truck ever built. I will never own anything else as long as I can drive.
JD power is marketing. Mechanics and every Toyota owner I’ve ever spoken to know Toyota’s are at the top of the list.

2016 TRD OFF TOAD Tacoma bought in September 2015, now has 72,000 miles and seems like it’s doing ok to me. I’m happy with it.
Only thing that I’ve replaced on my Tacoma have been the wiper blades, air filter, oil and filter. End of story!

I have a good friend who is a 100% Ford man. He has a job where he drives Toyota TRD’s for off road demos. He said that he is amazed that something can go right out of the showroom without modifications and handle the beating they are exposed to.

2016 tacoma trd offroad on 33's with a 6speed manual and 78k miles I have had 0 issues with it. 85 miles a day to and from work and using 4wd every day getting up my driveway. Other than 18 mpg and absolutly 0 bottom end torque I love it.
The 2016 to 2019 Tacoma does have more issues than previous years but it's still better than any other midsize truck on the road. The issues that it does have are minor.
Just bought a 2019 Toyota Tacoma this past weekend. So close to buying a Chevy Colorado. But I am glad I went with the Tacoma. Looking forward to many years of driving a dependable truck.

Have a 17 sr 4x4 since new. This article is solid about the trans flash issue. I have not had my trans updated and the best way to describe it is like the trans is tired and slow to respond. I have adjusted my driving to this and have gotten used to it. Aside from that it has been mechanically solid aside from 1 engine stall and it's at 31000 miles currently. All in all its a very reliable car, just hesitates so drive accordingly.
Its TSB 0062-18. It stumbles upon WOT. Get it done sir. It fix my issue. Runs better than before.
Put it in ECT power mode and it shifts like Dale Earnhardt!

Most of our cars from late 90s and early 2000s are still on the road and reliable. Fast forward to 2014 and newer and theres all sorts of quality issues on these newer trucks (regardless of brand). Many of the probs r these new 7+ speed transmissions. I prefer a good 6 speed.

Just bought a used 2019 with 40k miles. Drove it cross country. No issues with tranny or shifting. Plenty of power. Cruised easily at 90mph. Truck drives smoothly. SR5 with v6.
It is very indeed reliable when members around the world have over 100k MILES and 0 issues..theres already a member with 200k on a 3rd gen and has had 0 issues, rear ujoint and a serpertine belt...Even my 17 OR is having 0 issues and i abuse mine like crazy and im only at 42k
2019 TRD OR V6 Manual transmission, ZERO issues with my truck, outside a sensor replacement for the PCS in the grill. Blast to drive, crazy reliable, great investment.
I owned a 2006 Frontier for 10 years. There's not enough room to list all the issues I had with it, some major. I now own a 2016 Tacoma. I have not had a single issue or recall. I love it and will be buying another one. The only complaint I had was the Tacoma was pressed into the tailgate and wasn't very visible. I bought raised 3D letters for this on Amazon and they look great!

I’m a professional auto tech over 35 years in the field ....... been with CHEVY,TOYOTA and HONDA ....All major manufactures have there own problems for one ☝🏻 I’ve seen it all in my career! TOYOTA is and always be the best light truck that can run high miles over 100,000 miles and keep going without any major engine failures do to there close tolerances ........mind you however like all light trucks suffer HP and Torque......you can’t load them up and expect pulling power like a full size pick up!!!

2016 Tacoma trd off road 4wd, 113,000 miles. Does great with no transmission issues at all.
JD Power is "fake news" and is a "pay to play" organization. My 2010 OR 4WD Tacoma with 137K miles only had a worn $125 transmission mount replaced. Tacoma's are tough as nails. The resale value is proof. No one would pay top dollar for a truck that has a reputation of junking out in a few years.

as a tacoma owner, i can say that the transmission is a little quirky. that said, a software isnt huge issue. its a 15 minute fix to flash. its not like they have to tear the transmission open. what interests me when i think if "reliablity" is, am i going to be stranded? None of the Tacoma's issues are of that nature.

With my experience There are no reliability issue. The tacoma will not leave you stranded. I personally love the 15 and older simply cause I think they drive better but either way the tacoma is a solid truck hands down.

I sat in the Tacoma, and I didn't know what 60% of the buttons did lol wayyyy to complicated for my taste. 😂

Honestly, NOBODY should be having any issues with any vehicle until they're getting to that 60-70K mile range. By issue, I mean It is time to change break pads, turn rotors, or do anything that just needs to be replaced. Maybe tires. To be honest, I foresee replacing my stock Wrangler kevlar tires at about 50-60K miles. They're good tires, just not for a serious off-roader.

I would be curious to know if quality varies depending on where it is built? For example 4Runner is built in Japan, Tacoma’s are built in Texas and Mexico and my beloved Venza in Kentucky which I must admit does have a few fit and finish issues that I would dare say might not be there if it was designed and built in Japan
Correct, built in Japan is always more-reliable. The older Toyota T-100s in mid-90s were better than today.
...other issues were a leaking rear third break light on the cab, which can only be removed by dropping the headliner... I don't care for having a sealed transmission on my truck either. However, on a brighter note, not many people are complaining much about the 2.7L 4 cylinder Tacoma in the 3rd Gen... still a proven platform if people are truly looking for overall reliability... rocking a the original trans for the 4 cylinder too... not the one paired with the V6 everyone seems upset about.
I also forgot to mention that the manual trans may be an appealing option over the v6 auto as well.
BTW...I own a 2017 Tacoma SR5 with tow package and can pull a 25' boat that weighs nearly 4500 lbs with no issues whatsoever. Will be trading in for a 2020 Tacoma SR5 soon.

Well, you wouldn’t know it by their value on the secondary market. Still command a stiff premium.
People are unhappy with the transmission shifting, and Toyota can’t really do much because the calibration changes would effect emissions too much.

2016 off road. 68k miles. No issues so far other than leaky 3rd brake light. And squeaky leaf springs. It’s good truck.

same here 6sp man in the TRD OR double cab. Zero issues besides trying to back up a trailer and lots of valve noise like a diesel.. you had anything like that?
I must have hit the lottery. I drive a 4x4 TRD 2016 and have put 75,000 miles on it without incident. Nice job on the video!
A friend of mine has a 2016 Tacoma and hated the transmission.. he got it flashed and said it made a world of difference... so if you’re having problems. Try that and see if it helps you.. he talked about it in the vid.

Not sure the 2019’s have the problem... but “ flash” just means reprogrammed... sorry, that’s what he called it when I talked to him.
It's a TSB0062-18. It's a software update. The issue is stumble when WOT. Yes it's a day and night difference.
My 2018 is doing just fine... loven it
The absolute most reliable Tacoma is the 2.7 liter Manual Transmission..
I have a 2017 Tacoma work truck with 65k miles, no problems, just regular oil changes, like many other Tacoma owner, so these ratings are totally unreliable.
I have a 2012 TRD Tacoma with 154,000 miles on it and it has been unstoppable. I have not had a SINGLE issue with it. Routine maintenance, that's it.

Bought my 2008 Tacoma sr5 4 door for $19,6000, 30,000 miles. 2017 bought a new trd 4x4 premium pkg, $40,6000. Toyota gave me $5,000 off and $12,000 for my 2008, 200,000 miles on it. Do the math! My 2017 has no real issues and I love it! That being said, $$$.
I really love my 2012 Tacoma. Quad cab, long bed, 4x4. I have no problems and just love to drive it. This is as new as I will ever get. I don't really trust all these new bells and whistles.

You nailed it Robert. I had a 2008 Tacoma TRD Sport. I sold it and bought a new 2018 TRD OR and I did just what you said the first couple of months.I had to get used to the new one. Most of the gear hunting is 5th to 6th and back to 5th etc. If I'm not on the interstate I back out of the driveway, shift to S and up to 5th. This way the truck never goes into 6th gear.
Jim H there is a TSB that updates the shift points to fix that problem
That's what happens when you put an engine and transmission designed for a passenger car in a pickup truck...
Pickup trucks are meant for low range power and torque. Not to be wrung out at 6k RPM to achieve results.

I have a 2020 TRD Pro with 2450 miles and it still runs great!

Political correctness aside, it's a legit question. Building a car requires more care than picking tomatoes, BUT, WHY would Toyota management allow their company's reputation to be ruined by a stupid workers?? If i trust Toyota vehicles, may as well trust Toyota managers to run the factory (and it's workers) properly.
2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4 Sport Double Cab Long Bed was built on 11/4/15 in Mexico and delivered to me in Bremerton, Wa. on 11/23/15. My truck now has 47,800+ miles as of 3/16/19. My truck had both the cam sensor and the leaking rear diff recalls done and has had one rear back up light bulb replaced at about 14,000 miles. No other issues...I love my truck and would buy it again.
I have a Tacoma, and that gear hunting part is most definitely true. I'm currently looking into the OV Tune to fix it.
Own a 2010 yoda rolla with zero problems and still runs like a champ.
Have a 19 highlander and couldn’t be happier with it.
Just went big and picked up a pro taco.
I sleep well knowing all three are gona last.

This video was not about the 2009 Tacoma. Totally different drivetrain. All vehicles will differ in reliability between make, model, and year. Reliability 10 years ago has no bearing on today. I own a Lexus that needed a new transmission at 62k despite being dealer maintained since new. Does that mean all Lexus models are unreliable? Of course not. But that particular model had a well known transmission problem. It happens to all makes.
I have a 2014 tacoma manual 77k... Best truck ever.
2016 TRD Sport, 55k miles, 1 recall, oil and filter change every 5k miles. 0 problems!

I bought a 2017 Tacoma, so far zero issues. I bought it because my last Tokyo’ was 11.5 years old and 129,000 traveled with ONE ISSUE (that happened after about 100k miles): The FM radio died. I only traded it in because I wanted a truck.
2003 Tacoma 2 wheel drive 13 years and 325000 miles engine blew best vehicle I ever owned!
256k on my 07 Tacoma. Have only done oil changes, spark plugs, air filter, pads, rotors, and tires.. oh and a ujoint bearing last week. Haven't done any trans service for 130k, might be time to do it tho 😂 still shifts better then any GM off the lot.
My 2016 Taco was constantly in the shop. I now own a trouble free F150 and LOVE it.
I have 2019 TRD tocoma haven’t had a single problem with I have 32,000 miles but it has been very harsh miles I’m a frequent predator hunter and drive nothing but harsh hard roads.
I have 72k on my 2018 taco, got it with 0 miles lol no problems so far!!
I have my eyes on 2019 Tacoma but it looks like they still hasn't fixed the fuel pump issue?
111k on my 2017 DCSB SR5 auto Tacoma 45k a year and zero issues. Runs like a champ.
I have to say my 2017 TRD off-road died on me at an intersection. Electrical went out catastrophic failure. Toyota changed out fuse buss and really didn’t narrow down the problem. I have been driving it for about a year now no problems. I don’t trust it like I have my past tacos but so far it’s been ok??
My 2017 is having similar issues. It started with the radio just turning off and back on. Today it completely shut down on the freeway. It restarted after but I had no power. Seemed like after that happened I noticed when I slowed down or stopped it shut off and restarted again. Probably going to take it to Toyota today. I haven't seen many other cases of this issue
2015 old Gen Toyota Tacoma 4cyl access cab. No issues she has 49,854 miles mostly highway. All good here
I don't think problems have necessarily gone down in 2017-2019 on Carcomplaints, this is a normal trend (for most vehicles) as it takes time for issues to surface within the first three years.

You don't need to do deep dive I will give you a few examples. I am owner of 2018 Toyota Tacoma Off-Road. TONS of issues.
Issue #1. Two months after driving car of dealer parking lot radar sensor started malfunctioning. Cruise control and collision braking system would randomly stop working. I would be driving on highway at 5.30 am (I go to work early) no cars and suddenly my brake warning would start flashing and the car started applying brakes ON HIGHWAY by itself. Finally after 8 months of continuous problems radar sensor recall was announced. Design flaw that exposes sensor to water and it malfunctions. Surprise surprise.
Issue #2. Navigation constantly restarting during last winter.
Issue #3. Stared 3 months ago my right turn signal flashing very fast on dashboard, I go out, there is no signal in front or on the side mirror and very faint signal in the back. Happens randomly, Went to dealer and.... dealer told me they can see error code for blinker and they see that the circuit is drawing too much current (shorting somewhere) but because they cannot reproduce issue I described in the dealership there is nothing they can do about it!!! So the error code is there, it is showing that the circuit in question is drawing too much current but they cannot do anything about it since they cannot reproduce the actual issue I described. Sorry I had to write it twice because when they told me that I could not believe it.
Issue #4. Car does not want to turn off at night (happening randomly) instead it stays in accessory mode and beeps for key.
I use to have 1998 Toyota Corolla when I was in grad school. It was extremely reliable. After that I owned, Subaru Legacy, Honda accord, BMW M3, Subaru Outback, Porsche 911 Turbo, Subaru Legacy (my wife). Currently my wife has 2018 Honda CRV, I have 2018 Toyota Tacoma and 2015 Nissan GTR. Toyota Tacoma is by far the MOST UNRELIABLE vehicle I have ever owned.
I am very glad that Chevy came out with Colorado ZR2 (front lockers are sweet) and Jeep came with Gladiator. I replace my daily drivers every 4 years. Toyota will not see my money for a very very very long time if ever.
Another one showed up this weekend. Truck did not want to start. After few tries it started but sounded like it was not firing on all cylinders. Going back to the dealer .... again. So far Tacoma is the most unreliable vehicle I owned. This thing has 12k miles only. Very disappointed with Toyota.
I know of two Tacoma’s that have had early transmission failures. They are still 1000 times better then American pickups but the reliability has seem to go down hill
I have a 2013 TRD Sport DCLB with 213k and a lift, 37’s, re-geared, recovery, and armoured, air lockers etc.. it’s also my work truck. Tons of overlandjng trips with it as well, IMO the 2nd Gen Taco is KING!
