The Sopranos | The Deleted Scene Which Explained EVERYTHING About Vito

    In The Sopranos, the glorified crew tries to hunt down Vito Spatafore after he comes out of the closet. Phil Loetardo in particular is furious with Vito, whereas Tony Soprano is not as invested in getting Vito.
    Vito returning to New Jersey is considered one of the dumbest desisions made by a character, but there is a deleted scene in The Sopranos that shows this wasn't actually a desision made by Vito that is as dumb as it first appears.

    As a fan of comedy you’ve gotta admire Vito’s commitment to a bit. He dressed up like a leather daddy and danced with a guy on a leash, moves up to New Hampshire and shacks up in flambé domesticity all because he was there, it was a joke.

    Vito’s black eye lets us know the scene took place shortly after his fight with Jim. So it’s pretty early into his stay in NH. I think Tony wasn’t being very honest with him. They just wanted to get him back to Jersey. At no point was Phil ever calmed down about the situation, another sign Tony was lying to lure him back. Vito knows this. He only goes back because he’s running out of money.

      That would've been too humanizing. That Vito was killed for being gay does not make him a good person. He abandoned Johnny for the same reason he killed that civilian when he was on the lam.... bc he's a pos with an inflated sense of self-importance. He killed My Fawtha. He humiliated Chris when the latter was very vulnerable, claiming Aide threw it at him, which, granted, was said to cover his tracks, but that kinda makes it worse. He dehumanized the woman Chris loved in front of their peers to cover up his own secrets, then talks down to the obviously hurt Chris, althewhile knowing that no one would respect the Captain of the Good Ship Lollipop if they knew the truth. He threatened Finn for months. He laughed when a JOKE about being gay sent a bottle through Little Paulie's eye.
      Yes, part of the genius of this show is that it made you sympathize with bad ppl, like Eugene, the very same man who hit LP, but Eugene was equally selfish, and only cared to escape the life when if benefited him more to leave it, just like Vito. And speaking of, why didn't Vito go to the FBI for protection? Because in his egotistical mind, he was dead set on returning to the life where he got to bully, harass, rob, cheat and kill without consequence.
      Johnny never finding out, and more specifically, never finding out FROM VITO, is exactly how it would go, which is why that's how it DID go.

I had a job like that once and related to this so much. I basically had a job as a laborer in a commercial office building in the summer when I was in college. Like just random shit they needed done. I think we all knew Vito was smart enough to sniff out a trap but also naive enough to think he was smart enough to convince Tony that coming back could work.
    Either way, he got himself into that mess by thinking he could parade around town doing what he did while being a member of a group he knew would never approve.
    Overall, his urges replaced his common sense and it cost him his life… which is a very human trait we all contend with on some level in our own little way.

      Honestly, whether by greed (due to the money Vito brought in) or just not being as homophobic as the rest of the guys-I think Tony really would have been ok with him coming back if there was way he could do it without pissing off the rest of the crew. One theme was consistent- Tony was adamant it was going to be his decision how it was handled, whenever he finally decided to handle it.

    • @orange555
      @orange555 7 місяців тому

      "but also naive enough to think he was smart enough to convince Tony that coming back could work" - Um, he pretty much did convince Tony. He was Tony's best earner and Vito actually had a viable alternative plan. The only reason it didn't work was extreme pressure from the rest of the crew. It had nothing to do with Vito's intelligence. I think you need to go back and watch the show more closely.

    • @LostInBoston617
      @LostInBoston617 6 місяців тому

      @@orange555 I think you fail to realize that even though Tony may have liked the idea that Vito floated to him, his fragile ego would’ve won that battle and out of fear of being seen as soft or vulnerable, Tony would’ve clipped him regardless. But his method would’ve been far more merciful than ramming a pool cue up Vito’s ass as Phil had done.
      Those old school unwritten mafia rules Tony definitely would’ve prevailed in that situation.

    On the deleted scene where Vito was on the phone with Tony and Silvio, take a look at the bruising around Vito’s eyes. This happened the morning after he got in a fist-fight with Johnny Cakes when they’d started to make out. Vito could also tell that Tony was bullshitting him about being able to assuage Phil. After this scene, we get to the part in the show where Vito went back to the diner to apologize to Johnny Cakes, and admit that he’d been hiding himself for too long. The deleted conversation most definitely puts a certain slant on things, but it also kind of weakens the plot line that Vito was drawn like a flame back to the Mob Life. The whole Sopranos sub-theme of what is real and what's not being blurred is a bit weakened by it, so I can see why they'd cut it. It would have potentially taken the series into more of a soap opera lane, which was not really going to work long term.

Or maybe those lines were in the show, but were also in the deleted scene? If anything, this scene makes it much more clear that Vito knew Tony was bullshitting on the phone to get him. The look on his face just before throwing the phone to the lake makes itso obvious. What I dont get is: Vito had at least 200k hidden somewhere safe, possibly much more. And he knew the construction bussiness pretty well. He could have started his own construction company in another state far away, or in Canada or something. He did not have to work as a hard working blue collar labourer. He could even be a non-wiseguy criminal, running girls and meth. Or if he wanted to start a new life with a new identity with his family, he could have gone to FBI. I mean he had tons of options, instead of returning to Jersey, trying to get back in to the life. And Vito was not a stupid guy. He knew he would most likely get killed if he ever returned. I cant help but wonder if he was subconciously suicidal. I mean he went to a gay club in NY wearing a motorcycle outfit. And he did not even try to stop Sal when he saw him. Just think of Pussy killing the Elvis impersonator because he saw him with his FBI handler. Vito did nothing. He did not kill Sal, did not try to bribe him to keep him uiet, did not make up a story about why Sal was spreading rumours about him because he had a beef with him. Vito did nothing. And just think about what he said when he heard Eugene commited suicide.

    There is another deleted scene that definitely sheds new light on the situation…. Vito called Phil to a sit-down in an attempt to iron things out…. But the meeting was a ruse… Vito had his kid brother Bryan waiting in a Trolley across the street from Olive Garden (where the meeting was taking place)… and just as Phil was crossing the street, Bryan slammed on the gas… but in an ironic twist of fate, Phil unexpectedly turns back to his car because he forgot his lucky switchblade comb… inadvertently thwarting the attempted Mob rubout…. Bryan fled the scene after side swiping two parked cars and a Hotdog cart, but not before Phil was able to pin him as the driver of the Trolley…. And the rest is history….

      Doesnt matter if phil is gone you still have to contend with all the capos, and someone is going to talk and spread it around. Tony would look terrible if he let this slide, and would have to sleep like the end of blue comet for the rest of his life.
      Vito could have gone into witness protection and put everyone in jail. Realistically in the internet age/gps and cell phone age nobody is safe from anyone or the government.
      The gay thing was interesting plot wise but the amount of suspension of disbelief based on technology (track cell phone and other stuff) was so high. I guess i have to watch again to get a better sense of it because the realism of the closet gay thing is 100% but any chance of his return in the tri state area without death is 0%
      Hell even him running is a liability because he has dirt on the mob anyway. No way to realistically get him out of the situation alive in America. Maybe another country. Somewhere with their own mob type presence like Japan. Yakuza would not know or care.
      Eh that's all i got

    @bdr113080 27 днів тому

    Well, we have to remember that if it’s a deleted scene, the reason it’s not in there is because it didn’t happen in the canon of the sopranos universe. David Chase recently talked about this on the talking Sopranos podcast. Where sometimes to trick the public they would shoot a scene to Waze. At the time they had crewmembers that were leaking, scripts out to the media .
    So just because it’s a deleted scene that does not mean that it was meant to be canon to the story. Because that wasn’t how it went down that was the first time Tony and Vito talked was at the mall. They also shot two different scenes for the end of Adriana. They shot one scene where she got away and she left and she lived but she had to never come back New Jersey again. But we can’t say that’s Canon.

Vito could have said he dropped something in the security guards truck and was searching for it. 😂 His move to New Hampshire was a bone head move but he was scared. His heart became a “lump” for his family and he has no work ethic due to those no work jobs. I think I would have kept in the deleted scene and taken out the mall scene. But I’m not David Chase now am I? Live Free or Die is one of my favorite episodes. I think this story line was brilliant and I’m glad Joe Ganicolli suggested it to David Chase. The real question is was the pool cue chalked or not? 😂

Just as she's about to head upstairs, she glances at Tony as if she knows his intentions aren't to help Vito. After watching the series again, I'm back to liking Tony. I don't think the whole retrospect about Tony "falling into immorality and becoming worse" is true. A big part of the evidence used for this is that he doesn't remember what he said in the first season at Vesuvios. But, if you watch Season 6, he actually mentions going there in the rain to Arty when he is helping him about the restaurant. He mentions how much it meant for him to be there and was really being a good friend to Arty. In-fact, most of the series Tony has to deal with trying to do be better but everyone around him just lets him down or does something selfish. Then, he's supposed to be the sociopath and gets dropped by his own therapist?
    The whole thing when he pokes at Janice is obviously because he doesn't believe she's actually a better person. He thinks it's just another one of her scams which has been prevalent the entire series not to mention she was even urging Richie to take out her own brother. I think he should have forgiven Junior, but you could kind of say that he did in the last scene and the entire thing that bothered him about Junior shooting him is he thought that Junior loved him deep down, or was at least curious about it, and him getting shot proved in his mind that Junior didn't love him and it bothered him.

    It doesn't make any sense, that's why the scene should remain deleted. Tony didn't have any intentions of killing Vito yet, he was the one against it the longest although his crew or Phil would have jumped at the opportunity. Also, Tony begging Vito with sort of a girly voice is just off, it doesn't fit in with his character.
    I always saw the fact that Vito couldn't stand the life of a working man as enough of an explanation. Romantically, he had the perfect life with Johnny Cakes, but like the latter says on the phone: It was the lifestyle that he missed. It also makes sense that Vito understands T enough to know that money is his main interest, so he tries to bribe himself back in, and also suggesting an alternate position ("a more tolerant atmosphere") in Atlantic city.
