Frozen Songs
In the summer time it is light outside all the time: that‘s why we do not sleep. In the daytime, we work and in the nighttime, we walk outside and compete in running with the reindeers.
From the autumn, we prepare for the winter. We dry northern lights. To begin with, it does not stay so very high in the sky. We pull huge armfuls, divide it in sheaves, and hang in the attic. It does not dry - it does not die.
In winter sometimes, if one takes the northern lights, sprinkle some warm water on them and sets them alight, it will beam so bright and will clean the air; it will smell so good.
In the old days the frosts go as low as to minus two hundred to three hundred degrees. I personally remember that the frost was as low as five hundred degrees.
When you say a word while it is cold - it will freeze.
Every word has its own look, its own color, its own light.
Girls from frozen songs weave lace and all sorts of patterns.
They would decorate the whole facade of the house with frozen songs. On top of the roof which is decorated with a horse head they would put a jump word. Limerick canopies hang from both sides of the roof.
There is nowhere more elegant than our village.
Once a foreign merchant was walking along. Suddenly he saw a beautiful decoration - frozen songs.
-Ah! Ah! Ah! What an interesting and stunning surprise.
The foreigner was eager to order some songs and bring them to his own country for pleasure and listening.
Our girls and women began to sing songs and freeze them. Those old women, who still had voice, sang too. Songs do not interfere with business - done in parallel, good for the money.
A song would be put down in special boxes and marked where the beginning is and where the end is so that one should not start from the wrong side.
The girls had sung huge heaps of songs
and when spring came, the steamboats full of songs were sent off
and brought the songs to a foreign country.
People wondered what kind of frozen songs arrived from Arkhangelsk. The theatre was full.
Well, the foreign merchants don’t speak our language but they still understood it all!
- Our Arkhangelsk songs are good! Long, lingering.
- It's right! Nobody can sing better than our girls!
- Without a song, you know, inside we have darkness. With a song, we are airing our own. With a song we illuminate ourselves like a lamp!
Морожены песни
Летом у нас круглы сутки светло, мы и не спим. День работам, а ночь гулям да с оленями вперегонки бегам.
А с осени к зиме готовимся. Северно сияние сушим. Спервоначалу-то оно не сколь высоко светит. Надергаем, пучками повесим. И висит, не сохнет, не дохнет.
А зимой возьмём северно сияние, теплой водичкой смочишь и зажжем. И светло так горит, и воздух очишшат, и пахнет хорошо.
В стары годы морозы жили градусов на 200 на 300. На моей памяти до 500 доходило.
На морозе всяк слово как вылетит, так и замерзнет.
У всякого слова свой вид, свой цвет, свой свет.
Девки из мороженных песен кружева сплетут да всяки узорности.
Мерзлыми песнями весь дом по переду улепят да увесят. На конек затейно слово с прискоком скажут. По краям частушки навесят.
Наряднее нашей деревни нигде не было.
Как-то шел заморской купец. Увидал украшенье - морожены песни
- Ах, ах, ах! Кака распрекрасность, антиресность диковинна.
Иноземцу загорелось песен назаказывать и в свою страну привезти на полюбованье да на послушание.
Наши девки, бабы, старухи, которы в голосе, все принялись песни тянуть, морозить. Песни делам не мешат, рядом с делом идёт, доход даёт.
Песни в особы короба уложили, да обозначили, которо перед, которо зад, чтобы с другого конца не начать.
Больши кучи напели, а по весне на пароходах и отправили, в заморску страну привезли.
Народу любопытно: каки таки морожены песни из Архангельска? Театр набили полнехонек.
На что заморски люди нашему языку не обучены, а ведь поняли красоту песенную!
