Great video. Do you have any videos on how to clean the fuel lines. I just emptied the fuel tank and want to make sure everything is clean. The previous owner said the fuel that was in it was old but he treated it with stabilizer and gas treatment. It started right up at the docks and idled fine and then I drove it for about 1/2 mile and shut it off. Was not able to re-start it after that.
David, I have the same engine in my boat. If I press the tilt trim lever on the throttle, for some reason the 10 am fuse blows. Last year it happened once. It already happened to me 3 days ago. Do you know what can cause that by chance. Thank you for the video. I got the pump after watching your video.
I hope you have taken the fuel pump off and rebuilt it because it's painted on the inside. That paint will flake off and plug up the screens on the low and high pressure pumps. It's a very well known problem with these engines. You'll get stranded out on the water when this happens. I know because it happened to my boat (Volvo Penta 5.7Gx-i). There's a guy in Michigan that rebuilds the pumps or you can do it yourself like I did. Remove the fuel filter and use a mirror to look at the under side of where the fuel filter mounts. You'll see what I'm talking about. His channel on UA-cam is Man Cave Mechanic.
So let me start out by saying I am not a mechanic by far although I am capable of changing the oil in my vehicle this is my first boat and the manufacturer recommends SAE 30 synthetic. It is a Volvo Penta 5.0 I could not find synthetic SAE 30 anywhere and from what I read you want to keep the last number the same so the two options I seen were 5W-30 or 10W-30 and I went with 5W-30 full synthetic. Should I now have any concerns?
Hey Mike, That is a good question... I'm sure if you talked to a boat mechanic they would tell you to run what the manufacturer suggests. But I'm sure there are people out there that will tell you that it's nothing to worry about as long as it is a full synthetic. Personally I tend to stick to the idea of going with what the manufacture recommends, I will be going with the Volvo Penta 10w-40 Full Synthetic when I do my next oil change. I know that may not help, I've been in your shoes before and it's not fun blowing the extra money if you don't have too... but the last thing you want to do is damage your motor. You may want to reach out to a local boat mechanic and see what they think.
Is there a reason why you ran water only through the outboard drive when starting the engine? When would it be appropriate to use the water inlet on the inboard engine? I’m a little confused on the difference. Thx for posting.
That is a great question, I need to do more research about the functionality of the that part. If I found out I will post a video explaining when to use the attachment on the engine.
@@MileHighCampers page 48 of the owner's manual for Volvo-Penta says you can run the engine using the hose port attached to the engine. I have a 5.0GXi-J, the hose port has a blue cover on it with a crankcase and circulating arrow indicating flush with the engine running. In fact, the manual states that this port was put there speciciflly to flush the engine with fresh water to prolong the life of engine components.
From what i understand you can flush the engine but you cant run the engine using the hose inlet. You would will damage the pump. At least thats what it says for my 2002 boat.
Unfortunately I cannot answer that question, I do not know, I would stick with Volvo Penta for the outdrive if it were me. I will be doing an outdrive video once I get my boat back.
Hi, thanks for the video! Just a few questions 1) There is a motor noise when you are pumping the oil - I am assuming that that is NOT you running the engine at the same time, just some background noise? 2) Would this procedure be the same on a 1990 Volvo Penta AQ271 - anybody know? 3) Anybody know which oil to use for a 1990 version of the engine?
I am not sure if it is the same oil or not, there is a strong possibility it is, but I would try to find an owners manual for that motor and check, In some cases the oil weight can also be found printed on the oil fill cap.
Excellent video. Doesn’t get much more easier then following step by step with this. Thanks my brotha!

How to change oil if you do not want to use the pump? Like to really drain everything out? Where is the oil drain bolt?
How about the outdrive? Can I use Amsoil 75w90? In the SX?

Amsoil makes a Synthetic Marine oil that is better for your application.
I saw that on their website, sadly my local guy didn't have it at the time.
Hi man, thank you for the video. Do you know what kind of power steering fluid this penta system uses? Cheers
I have volvo penta sx 4.3 so it is the same oil with 5.7?

Isn’t this a small block Chevy?
