raye's story makes this album so much more special. she's been in the industry for 10+ years, been through it all, and if u go on genius you'll see she's written so many ppl's favorite songs. it even was rumored that drake made his agent set him up on a date with her bc after one session in the studio together, he was so impressed with her writing skills. but after years of being abused by the industry, she took to twitter and talked about how she had been trying to put out her own music for so long, but nobody believed in her so she kept having to give her songs to A list artists. so she dropped her record label, became an independent artist and finally put out her album.
Raye is RIDICULOUS. Her old label should be charged for suffocating her talent. Great things happen when you give artists creative control over their work. Makes you wonder how many incredible talents are stuck in the limbo she was in.
Exactly. I honestly never thought she was going to make it big. She's always had the talent but all her old label seemed to do was put her on EDM artists tracks as a featured artist. So even when those tracks did well she never got the credit
0:23 - Introduction. 0:37 - Oscar Winning Tears. 2:43 - Hard out here. 5:06 - Black Mascara. 8:47 - Escapism. 12:21 - Mary Jane. 14:33 - The Thrill Is Gone. 16:41 - Ice Cream Man. 19:27 - Flip A Switch. 20:50 - Body Dysmorpia. 22:06 - Environmental Anxiety. 23:17 - Five Star Hotels. (feat. Mahalia) 24:35 - Worth It 26:06 - Buss It Down Thank you Jon for another amazing reaction!
it was a moment to see his face absolutely change when he realized the meaning of ice cream man, the rest of the video seemed impacted by it and I think it’s an example of Raye’s incredible writing skills and raw sincerity.
I actually love how willing Raye was to be repetitive (albeit in this INCREDIBLY diverse album) within the songs. Repeated motifs and words, things like Codeine, Cocaine, Painkillers, Little black dresses, makeup. Really pulls all of the stories in the album together, and feels personal
What a great find. Didn’t know of her until Escapism. This album is uniquely amazing. A mixture of Amy Whinehouse’s voice and some beats like The Weeknd would put out. Just my opinion.
The song secrets from regard featuring her is really good, as well as regardless and you don’t know me by jax Jones featuring her which is a massive throwback song but oh well
I view the latter half of the album as a form of aftercare. There’s a clear emotional arc where the heaviest songs are in the middle, the beginning is easing you into a headspace to be receptive to the centerpiece, and the ending starts lifting your spirits by transitioning out of the really personal pain she was singing about with “Environmental Anxiety”, then going into the sugary sweet, cautiously hopeful “Worth It”, and finishes off with the silly empowerment anthem “Buss it Down” and the dedication track. The album definitely wouldn’t work for me without its latter half. “Worth It” is my solid second favorite song behind “Escapism” bc I love good vibe tracks.
24:39 Worth It gives me CUFF IT vibes and I love it! This whole album is a breath of fresh air and hopefully a sign of more great albums to drop in 2023.
The rest of the albums coming out this year need to surpass this one for me because this is my album of the year so far! Spectacular project all around.
Raye literally deserves the recognition that’s she’s earning rn, finally she becoming a star after all these years. One of the most talented artists out hear and hopefully one of the biggest Popstars out here aswell
it's a long time since I bought an album and actually sat and listened to it right through about 5 times in a week. Astonishingly strong vocals, production and songs.
never heard of raye before now but she's got a pretty unique and original sound, i like it! this is exactly why i appreciate you reacting to all sorts of different artists, i love discovering new music through your reactions!
So happy to see you react to Raye! Been following her for years since I saw her when she opened for Halsey in 2018. A great performer with a great back catalogue - Euphoric Sad Songs EP was everything I needed in 2020/21. Much more pop than this record which I also adore. I can't wait to get to know this album like her other tracks. Raye has spoken about being a big fan of a lot of genres and I really think this album demonstrates that on this album. Great insight on the album cover, I hadn't considered what you said! Some good interviews out there with her, especially about her issues with her record label, but have to say her conversation on being black/mixed race in pop music in Leigh-Anne Pinnock's documentary 'Race, Pop and Power' was really interesting. It was a round table with Alexandra Burke, Sugababes' Keisha Buchanan, Leigh-Anne and Nao.
Idk about yall but I love this album, I like how there is 2 parts of the album separated not just for this one but for ones in gerenal, her voice is incredible she gain a new fan.
I am on a 3 concert adventure: I went to see Raye on Friday last night in Kingston, SW London at a small venue. She is much better live, with a backing band. She is very interactive with the crowd. Her voice reminds me so much of Amy Winehouse. The next two days I am seeing Symphonic Metal bands: Epica (from Holland) and Tarja Turunen (From Finland). So a little bit different from Raye.
OMG can't believe you actually reacted to this one! Thank you JD! 👏 Edit: I've actually been anticipating this album since the first single Hard Out Here came out months ago and I have to admit that the second half of the album felt like a massive letdown (I only end up liking Flip A Switch). But I suspect that's mainly due to the first half being literally perfect from track 1 to track 7
I have been a fan of RAYE for almost two years. I really love this album. I’m so proud of her and I’m glad she was willing to be as vulnerable as she is on this album. I’m so glad she got out of her record deal and is now an independent artist. I saw her crying on Instagram live and her angry posts on Twitter so I know how she feels.
Thank you for the review! Indeed some very good songs on the album. Funny to see Worth It and Buss It Down were not your favorites, because for me they are some of the best new songs on the album. Music taste differs for everyone
I’m so glad to see you do a video listening to Raye! She’s been my favourite artist since 2016 and I’ve followed her career closely. It’s her little sister Katelyn on the album cover btw. She’s been held back by her old label Polydor for years and she’s been through some really horrific things in her personal life so to see her shining now as an INDEPENDENT artist is so great to see. Also I’ve been watching your videos since you were making song reactions with Simon so to see you enjoying raye’s music is great :)
Raye is just an icon already, this whole album was just an experience!!! Thanks John for checking this out. I hope this album doesn't get unnoticed because I feel like it's an album has incredible production, lyrics, story...etc...I honestly never thought we would hear something like this again. But here we are! RAYE is just killing the airwaves right now. She deserves everyone's attention. It has been 8 years since she had recognition! She deserves to have the opportunity to express her frustrations and emotions the way she wants to! I'm obsessed atm. What a artist
I love your reactions!! Am bummed on you missing the humor she used to finish off the album on Buss It Down, that track had me dying on first listen, so fun. But you were spot on when you said “you ever feel like you’re listening to something real special” because those were my first thoughts too. In love with this album and so glad I found Rayes music.
The incredible variation music, Escapism alone is one of THE best songs ever made. Fucking Genius, and her off the charts voice, her transitions, her fierce lyrics, and just RAYE herself is all 5 alarm FIRE. RAYE IS truly THE QUEEN
Thank your being so delicate yet call out the importance of the that topic. Lady Gaga has been through the same, although she never said who it was, there was a producer it label manager who asked her to remove her clothes, a horrific story too. Scared she did so. It's such an old tale. It's time to call it out. And we need good men supporting women. Thank you. 🙏🏼
Hey Jon! Can you check out the album "Parannoul - After The Magic". I have not been this emotional about music in a long long time. It's Art rock and shoegaze, genuinely one of the best albums I have heard in a long time. Relentlessly elegant music with equally beautiful and tragic lyrics. My album of the year. Reminds me of Ants From Up There, it's in a different language though so you might need to look em up.
Yeah she's comfortable in rapping too. Many artists are, Lauryn Hill for example. Even Missy Elliott, when she's not rapping she has an amazing singing voice, check her first album.
Hey Jon I just wanna say that Jon React to TV channel is something that I really enjoyed! Lots of creators use different editing techniques that helps them avoid copyright, hopefully this is something you’ll look into

Good to see Raye finally getting her flowers. She's been on the grind for like 10 years and never really blew up until recently
Fuck polydor for not letting her release an album I bet there crying in there sleep now
Its a Lie she been blew up before but couldnt do What she wanted
This album is no skips for me I’m so impressed!
Raye has shown this potential for her whole career, so great to finally see a full album release from her!
Holy shit. RAYE does so much on here, and does it so well.

I never heard of her until yesterday. But, this album was incredible, a breathe of fresh air and on a different level for music. Thank you Raye

i interpreted the album cover of her balancing on top of the instruments as her trying to navigate the darkness of the music industry
070 Shake really ends up on one of the top songs of the album when she features. Escapism beat reminds me of a top tier Danjahandz beat.
