The way the fish turned on reminds me of snook fishin' in Florida. They don't bite most of the time then they turn on all at once and eat like pigs for a while, then stop and not one bites. It's a tide phase thing in Florida but I bet big clarity and temp changes are important up there. Cod must be different. I caught them in Sweden on an island in the summer and they just kept biting all week. I wanted to fish for the flounders I saw at the market but my buddy didn't have the stuff for them. But the cod bite was crazy good.
If just realized you're in the shinnecock bay west of the Ponguogue bridge. If was fishing there commerical all summer, I probably saw you without realizing it 😂
Ahh my home base..so nice out here with real clean water. . You really nailed them.We limited the other day and with two 22 inchers, got the most fish at the top of AM incoming and did a nice troll on the shelf east bay at slack high. Need wind WITH tide..Mucho Rohins and shorts plus a short striper under PQ bridge on fluke rig! John have you ever trolled for fluke?
I know all about that wave action , in Oregon Inlet , those 60 plus foot charters come rolling by at like 30 mph and less that 100 foot from you. I got an autopilot 136 and I immediately turn into the waves and eat a few waves over the bow. Do not have a choice really. I fish the next to the areas they travel in to get out the inlet and yeah , its rough at times lol. Now combine that with weather , when we are out in 15 plus MPH winds and deal with those waves as well. Makes you ass squeeze the seat a little tighter..............
I picked up a Dark Matter rod at Christmas and have used it plenty with my light tackle St Croix mojo inshore rods. Yes for me your rod rates with what I believe to be the best rods. I really like the ability to use the Dark matter rod near shore. 1 to 6 oz jigs give you a ton of flexibility. I have to switch rods with St Croix. As far as flounder fishing water clarity and temperature. My experiences in South Jersey have been more often with water temp changes and high tides. I am usually fishing in water depths less than 20' and mostly 10-15 feet BUT staying with a day where you are being skunked is absolutely key. Thanks for the video!
This guy. Love him. I fish same waters +/- and he's on it. Gotta add that pink n white combo of colors is murder on fish on every b.o.w. albeit a short period but it's usually mid July thru early August. That's just my observation tho
Nice new toys john, the fishing is exceptionally good this year up there makes me want to move back! Or become a snowbird! Florida good but I miss eastern LI.
Hi John. I just picked up your latest rod (the one in this video.) How does it do casting? I know it's a jig rod but I want to be able to bring just one rod with me when I kayak fish for fluke. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!
If you're comfortable casting with a baitcaster, you'll do fine with this. Assuming you're using 10 or 15# braid, I use 10, the spiral wrap will have little to no impact. If you want to cast two-handed, the handle length is going to allow for longer casts.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thats great to hear! I'm coming from largemouth bass fishing so I'm very comfortable casting with a baitcaster, moreso than spinning gear. I'm pairing it with the Accurist baitcasting reel you use in the video. Love your vids and I've purchased two of your online courses (Bucktail Mastery and Fluke Mastery. It's helped me immensely!
Wow, being a largemouth fisherman you really do know how to handle a baitcasting rod. I'd be interested in you emailing casting impressions to info at striper pursuit dot com. Thanks!
Great video John. Your videos are always packed with info for us fishing. We tried bleeding out fish and packing on ice and it was easy to filet with meat stiffened up. Always look forward to your next video and maybe fishing with you someday. Thanks Again!!!!
Not sure, because I have no feedback from the lithium battery. It's 100ah, and I can't seem to kill it. One day in Florida I measured covering 10.3 miles moving among spots, but that didn't include a couple of hours of spot lock plus other fishing.
Love the videos very inspirational and professional love watching you it’s an amazing privilege I look up to you greatly appreciated the tips and tricks
It's been the same down here in south Jersey. Between the unseasonably cold (upwelling) waters coupled with dirty water, the fishing in the back has been tough. That clean green ocean water makes all the difference once it hits the backwaters of the channels and bays. Out front at the reefs is a whole other story. Praying for warmer water! Congrats on the continued success of your rods! Tight Lines Bait and Tackle in Somers Point, NJ had some of your heavier rods and they went like hot cakes. I wound up buying an OTI rod rated for 14oz but love it in the back. It's pretty awesome out front, too. I did get an Accurist reel, but unfortunately my dreams of owning a Skinner will have to wait for now. Cheers on continued success with the Dark Matters, John!!
I had a similar experience with the cleaner water towards the end of high tide turning the bite on around FI inlet last weekend. Another great video looking forward to the next one
Another productive session. Great video. Would love to be a fly on the wall when Darren spots that double handle setup mate! Has he and and are you still talking
Ppl only hate on them because it’s not what they want to catch. A complete unbiased take from me is that sea robins taste absolutely delicious. Just like any other fish, clean them right after you catch them and put it on ice.
It's been a hot spell for a long time and i look forward for the Fall weather. That rod looks great, I'll get one over the winter. 75 degrees in the bay, that's pretty warm. I heard that the ocean temp off Atlantic city was in the 50's last week. Clear water is the ticket. I watched John's video today and it sounds like folks are keyed in on Ricks boat. he had a good trip. I have a question, what is the green rag thing on your bow, I've seen it on your Florida video's.
Wow more things I feel compelled to purchase 🤣🤣 and hide from my wife. I saw both the casting and spinning models come in both a ml and mh/h format. Is the bay version of these rods going to supplant the slimwave and carbon shield or for people looking to buy similar rods are these bay version a good alternative? Enjoy the video, used the bounce n jig from on my Nantucket fluke trip.
The casting version definitely replaces the slimwave for this fishing. I don't recall using the carbon shield for fluke at all. When the lighter spin version arrives, it will be a great bay fluking rod, as well as for other things.
I love how you pay attention to all the indicators. Observation is a poweful tool. I like the bend in that new rod, I'll have to get one with 10lb test for the peconics for next season.
It was easy to design. We just needed to scale down the other one. I caught a decent fish with it when I saw you fishing on the weekend. BTW, that spot was good again yesterday.
I had that rod in my hands the other day, I really don’t need another one, but I like the way I see it bending, I may have to go back. Could you possibly tell us what bay you were in ? Kayak access is very limited and I’m afraid to travel far in mine, thanks very much, another great video.
John what are you looking for in terms of bottom structure/depths when fishing the bays/sound? Clearly in the beginning here you mentioned water color and moving tides and you mentioned a sand bar but I’ve been struggling to find the fish. I see at the end of the video you’re only in 8’ of water. Small depth changes? Larger drop offs? Mostly sandy bottom?
There's a bar there and I was fishing the edges, which is always a great strategy. It was also important to fish cleaner water on this trip, which came in later in the tide than usual for where I was fishing.
The last couple years I’ve been learning this fishery and I have so many questions. Do you always find the keepers mixed in with the shorts? Or do you keep moving around if you’re just catching shorts?
Mr John, I had a nice fluke come off boat side on Sunday and instantly remembered your prior video. I kept the bucktail in the water and did a figure 8 and watched it turn around and INHALE my teaser grub. My buddy couldn’t believe what he saw. Such an aggressive species.
I sure do miss flounder and weakfish fishing. Moved here to Missouri 6 years ago. Seems like the weakfish are cycling up again. Fluke fishing has been very good at times in the last few years.
The bait moved in on the warm weather and the fishing really responded there. That warmer brown water was certainly not working though, as the cleaner and cooler ocean water had to push back before the fish responded.
It's interesting that the bite got good with the outgoing tide. I've always found that at least with stripers outgoing was good during the early season when the water was on the cool side due to all the warm water coming out of the estuaries. Do you think it was strictly due to visibility?
Do you have spot lock on that, i put a troller on tje fron of my yak and i have a standard yak motor in the back and still have the pedal drive in.tje middle what a setup for the tournaments and just staying on the fish
Check out the HooDoo 12 Tempest… got mine the other day and love it!!!! Price with shipping to my front door with a bunch of accessories and a 7ft rod came to around $1,400
