  • A lot of misconceptions are cleared up in this discussion about the origin, the culture and the care of hippeastrum, commonly known as amaryllis. One such interesting fact revealed is that these bulbs have been successfully passed down from one generation to another, remaining viable for 25 years and longer.

Easy to pollinate by hand and grow from seed. Plant immediately when ripe. Keep indoors for the first 3-5 years and you should have a flowering sized plant. LOTS of them.

I live in North Carolina and I left about 10 of my amaryllis outside in pots and all of them survived the winter. 😅

I see a magnificent clump of hardy red amaryllis growing in a garden at a church here in Athens Georgia they are blooming at the present time. What species are the hardy outside plants?

Most of them are hardy if located right. Mine are best in a partially sheltered location. Near a building, under a tree... Maybe just a little extra time on the growing season.

@@olsonlryou’re definitely right, I don’t have any cold hardy varieties. But all of my amaryllis survived outside in pots but in a sheltered space. I’m in zone 7b.
