La Berganza inarrivabile, strepitosa interpretazione

My favourite production of Barbiere by far. It's on DVD with English subtitles.

One of the all-time masterpieces of world cinema (not just musical cinema!) but the credits (and no one here until now as far as I can see) mentions the genius behind it (other than Rossini): the film director, Jean-Pierre Ponnelle. Corrected now. Incredible stage director and filmmaker, the best ever in this genre.
Please update the credits though, this is unacceptably unfair.

I totally agree with you. Ponnelle's directing genius is sadly missed in today's opera world. The singers are perfectly cast and respond to each other without artifice. Teresa Berganza's Rossini is believable, intelligent, graceful and her singing exquisite. Alva's sweet, flexible tenor voice and acting in particular stands out in this very difficult tenor role. Hermann Prey as Figaro is sexy, smart and sensuous. Ponnelle as a director was incredible. He always respected the music, and how it tells you where to go and how to move. He allowed the singers to breath, move and create, and allowed the audience to appreciate in their own way, (rather than propagandizing or moralizing as so often happens today in "revised" or "concept" opera productions) the genius of the librettist and composer.
The best version of this opera I have ever seen. I think that Rossini must have been very happy and with a light hart when he composed it😊

Una filmación legendaria con los mejores cantantes (y actores) rosinianos del momento y problamente de la historia, al menos aquí la Berganza no tiene rival con sus difíciles agilidades solventadas con aparente fácil maestría y cascadas de notas otorgando entidad a cada una de ellas. Con una gracia actoral y belleza tímbrica inigualables.

Magnificent production and cast. But would it be possible to make the subtitles work?
Edizione definitiva. Altrimenti si possono sentire quelle tradizionali, con gli abbellimenti, vocalizzi, gorgheggi aggiunti, qui espunti dalla dotta revisione Zedda, abusivi ma piacevoli, vedi la Rosina di Maria Callas. La regia di Ponnelle è magistrale, altro che gli odierni imperanti travisamenti, frutto di elucubrazioni che trasudano supponenza e finta profondità. Ormai questa regia e questa scenografia si sono fuse indissolubilmente con il capolavoro buffo rossiniamo. Non plus ultra.
Para mí la mejor versión grabada. Berganza continúa sin tener sucesora.

@@markmavashev4951 La Bartoli, voce piccola e non molto Bella, con la sua petulanza en qualquisia il personaggio, me dispiace vivamente. E una virtuosa, certo , ma, a che fine sirve queste virtuosismo vacuo?

Ma non si tratta mica di quel cast là. Questa è La Scala: Non la London Symphony...
Registrarono l’opera due volte: una per il disco ufficiale della Deutsche Grammophone con la London Symphony e un’altra, con solo la banda sonora dei brani musicali, per il film con orchestra e coro della Scala; i recitativi secchi, come si può notare, furono captati in presa diretta, espediente usato in tutti gli altri film di Ponnelle che li prevedono (e pure nel Don Giovanni di Losey). Conoscevo pure il motivo di tale scelta di una doppia registrazione, l’età avanza e non mi ricordo più!
