Nice video, Thanks. As a retired machining supervisor I can appreciate the amount of work, planning and machine programming that goes into a razor like this. Kudos to Eric!
Hi Matt I was also one of the original owners of the Janus. I agree with all you said. Beautifully made. Eric is a most honorable person. I followed his journey and poured his heart and soul into this project. I heard the original prototype shaved amazing but as you said he listened to others and changed it. I like smooth and very efficient razors and this was extremely aggressive and unpleasant to use. Eric accepted the razor back and gave me a full refund. I have to say my favourite razor is the Rocnel Sailor 2020 adjustable razor. I enjoyed the Rex but I found it to have some drag. The Envoy didn't drag. Happy holidays
Beautiful razor. And yeah, why make it so aggressive when it's adjustable? Make it more in the mild side or in the middle. If someone wants a more aggressive shave then they can turn it up. Good review.
Happy Christmas Matt and everyone at Razor Emporium. I'm lucky enough to own an original toggle so won't be buying this new version but that doesn't prevent me from appreciating all the hard work that went into designing and building this one. Thanks for sharing with us all.
That’s a really great looking razor. I love the retro toggle design. But being that aggressive is a dealbreaker for me. I like my Ambassador around level 2ish. On a Monday morning I might go crazy at a level 3. But that’s about as high as I find enjoyable. That’s why my R-41 is nothing more than a decoration.
I’m sticking with my rex ambassador. That’s pretty much my end all razor. Only time I switch it up is for holidays and my birthday. I’ll switch it with my new old stock 1946 Gillette aristocrat plated in 24k gold.
I have a 46-47 aristocrat. I have yet to figure out how to get a good shave with it. I am not sure if it is too aggressive to start with and I get a lot of razor burn, or is not aggressive enough and I use too much pressure. Any thoughts as to where it falls on the aggressiveness scale? I have no trouble with my fat boy or Slims using them on a six - three - one setting for the three passes.
@@manfrommeeteetse3880 It could be from a lot of things. Maybe your Aristocrat was dropped and the doors are bend and the blade is uneven or maybe it's your technique and you can't find the right angle or pressure. Or perhaps the razor is just too mild for you or the blade that you are using doesn't work well with the razor.
I appreciate your honest review of this razor. What an undertaking! The Toggle as you well know is an engineering marvel. Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you and your’s!
I was going to pick one of these up, but came totally out of the shaving rabbit hole. Very cool to see it produced and hope that V2 comes out and hit the mark.
Hi Matt- Great shave and razor review; thank you! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas! Take good care and be safe and be well. Best regards, as always, Matt!
Great review, Matt. Thank you. I’ve come so close to pulling the trigger on this razor. Have been getting Eric’s email updates for years. I have a beautiful Gillette Toggle so I can wait, but maybe I’ll pick up version 2. What an accomplishment.

Merry Christmas brother! Wow seems like its mowing down like crazy even with a much steeper angle you’re using, unless its just the camera playing tricks on me for the blade angle. And on number 1 no less. I would not be in the market for this even if i wanted a super high end item in the den. I do very much want to try the Envoy tho, or the ambassador even some day.
Love the look of the toggle. You can tell a lot of love, care and attention went into it. Disappointing to hear that even on the first setting it's still an aggressive shave. On an unrelated note, Matt have you tried the King C. Gillette DE from Walgreens? Is it the same as the heritage?
Very interesting. I have a very aggressive razor, can remember the make right now, I left it in the US on my last trip, and I'm shipping it back down soon, and I couldn't use it pass setting 1, but I never tried riding the cap. I might revisit it once it arrives.
It’s funny I found the original toggle a hair aggressive... it just didn’t feel smooth... but man do I love the looks of it! This one looks good too...
Thank you very much demonstrating this exclusive razor (and close up shots). Looking at an 'Inflation Calculator', it's stunning to compare the quality of a Gillette Adjustable 'Toggle' (originally costing $7.50 in 1956 (around $72 in 2020) or $10 in 1957 (around $93 in 2020) or $12.50 in 1960 (around $110 in 2020)) to the quality of a comparably-priced adjustable like the Merkur 'Progress' or 'Futur' or Parker 'Variant'. I assume even Merkur's 'Vision' adjustable razor (costing ~$70 around 2000?) still isn't as complex as a Gillette 'Toggle'. It seems unlikely Gillette will ever re-introduce any comparable adjustable safety razors (given their sadly derivative 'King C. Gillette' safety razor). It comes down to production cost. Cnc is very linear i.e. you make 100 it's almost same cost as 1,000. Progressive stamping is what gillette did. Incredibly high tooling cost (likely over $1M) but per unit price incredibly cheap. But obviously you have to sell hundreds of thousands to justify investment.

@@AM-qi4ro In the end the razor looks amazing. It has flaws. The price is outrageous. But you decide what to buy. If the razor is well made then I would buy this as the only razor and sell the rest. Definitely worth it. Metals aren't cheap. So is machining. And if these razors sell for 100$ there is no money for the the guy who made it. That's also one of the reasons Gillette eventually went with the super adjustables. Cheap to make and gives good shave. That's the reason Gillette Adjustable later on know as the toggle was sold as a premium razor for a very short time when they were selling their Fat adjustable called Fatboy. They went with The Slim adjustable to reduce prices and finally went to the super adjustables. You can buy an old Super speed or Gillette tech and use it for a lifetime without spending more money.
Janus razor looks amazing. A very few people may buy it. But its definitely a very well built razor.
If the razor could shave well then that would be great. Eventually the prices will fall from 500$ to 300 or 350$. As the market for this is small.
@@coolguy298 I have no idea what I just read. The purpose of a razor is to shave. No one cares about a pretty object in your bathroom that's overpriced and of no utility. It's your money, your time, and your face. I just love all three of mine more than anyone that puts this to their face. Matt needs this nonsense because he makes a living from it.
$500 for a razor. Not happening.
Crap razor expensive but not good for shaving
Merry Christmas!!
