Lock Spinning and Using Textured Yarn

- In this video, I'm demonstrating one method of lock spinning I enjoy, and then using the yarn in a project. I often talk about ideas for using textured handspun yarn in projects but this time, I wanted to complete an actual handspun project. I hope this gives you some inspiration for ways that you can use textured yarns in your own handspun projects!
To learn about different breeds of sheep, their characteristics, and history, I highly recommend The Fleece and Fiber Sourcebook: More than 200 Fibers from Animal to Spun Yarn by Deborah Robson and Carol Ekarius. You can find a copy here (Amazon Affiliate) www.amazon.com/gp/product/160...

I have been spinning for 30 years, and my favourite thing is to spin and dye art yarns that you’d never find in a store. You are an absolute delight, and your videos are a joy to watch.
The opened locks looked like a cloud of fairies and dancing unicorns!
🧚♀️🧚♂️🦄🦄🦄💖
Be fearless in creativity!
Thank your the lock spinning demo and e planning about the yarn over hat transition…. Excellent!
that yarn is GORGEOUS!!! and i love how the hat and glove combo came out!
Your passion for fibre is contagious 🥰🌸
🤗
Wow! i never would have thought of that - both spinning and knitting with such a funky yarn. I really like the color combo and both the hat and hand warmers turned out beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Thank you, your videos are always clear and educational. I learn a lot from them and love your style!🥰❤
Your project turned out so cute!!!
Evie -- so cute -- nice Spring colors!!
Thanks! I thought so too! 😀🌷💐🌼
What a fun way to accent existing pieces!
Your channel is a constant source of inspiration and education, - I love it! 😁💖 Already got some singles waiting to be bead plied, some thick and thin that was one of my first spinning attempts that will be turned I to beehives or coils, and am dyeing some locks, some of which may now end up as a hat brim! 😂😂Thanks for all your hard work, Evie. Much love. 💖😍🙏🏻
Agreed! I love Jillian’s work as well! :)
Your projects turned out so cool! It reminds me of the early 2000 when scarves with textured, furry novelty yarn used at the beginning and end were all the rage.
Yes! Totally! I wanted to go find some frosty silver eyeshadow and some low rise jeans for this one! Lol! I had the same vibe!!!
@@JillianEve Butterfly clips! 😂
Wow, I love how you floofed the locks and spun them! How gorgeous :-)
Super cute idea and they came out adorable.
Thank you!
Thank you for showing how to use art yarn in a project. I love the hand warmers and hat!
OMG‼️😎 I want to wallow in those locks‼️
I maybe did a little bit off camera... 😁💖🧶
@@JillianEve 🤣
I love your videos as a newbie spinner! This is super informative ❤ and just really cool to see what the options are!
i'm so happy for this video
That makes so much sense!
Ooooo‼️😍 That yarn is GORGOUS‼️‼️‼️
💜💙💚💛🧡❤
I'm not a spinner so it's amazing to me that you were able to just get a random handful of fluffed-out locks to attach to each other and become a yarn! I've been watching a lot of your videos and I'm wondering - is there a video where you spin the yarn out of your floof box? I'd love to see it!
The Distaff day videos are for the floof box. 😊💜🧶
That’s super cool!!
Floofmania!! ❤️
This was great! I just acquired 8oz of dyed locks. I'm going to spin them up and use them as trim for a scarf and shawl.
Beautiful xxxxx
Your videos are always so pleasant and fun to watch! It was nice to learn that people in old times weren’t constantly itchy by the coarser wools!
I have a big ol bag of wensleydale locks that I use for needlefelting on fantasy creatures and I just looove the curly texture on them. They make everything so much more fun! I was so jealous when you squished that big pile of fluffed up locks. I want a bed that looks like that haha
There are just endless creative ways to use locks! I bet they look amazing on your creatures!
Very cute!
Thank you for this video, I am going to try spinning some of my sheeps curly locks as my next project, inspired by this video. I am very impressed by your knowledge of the different breeds and their wool quality!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Evie, thankyou so much for this
Video/podcast. I have some locks & was wondering how to spin on Drop Spindles & then using them. You answered both thoughts in one go. So thanks again.
Keep Spinning & knitting
Take care & stay safe.
Lots of love Jen 💘
Hu Evie, Thankyou so much for the Heart Reply.
Take care & stay safe
Love Jen 💘
I really should try this and one day I will have to let go of the perfectionist in me as it can look so pretty. And yours has turned out amazing, thank you so much for this video evie. Love and hugs and looking forward to the next video xx
Thank you Sadie! I know Lancelot can spin locks all day long if you decide to go for it!
JillianEve that was my thought as gwen hated it I know that much hahaha
Perfect timing- I just spun some textured yarn. I love the yarn over tip! Thank you!!!
You are welcome! Yay! 😄💖🧶
So pretty and I bet its amazing to work with. I'd use it in my amigurumi or dreamcatchers
Oh wow! That could be really gorgeous!
@@JillianEve yes! Especially as some unicorn or doll hair.
Enjoyable spin and great finished projects! Love your channel💞
Thank you! 💖😊
You could make a textured tassel with the remaining yarn. X
Do you need to set this single? Love your Hat and gloves! Thank you for your help and wonderful informative videos. Also do you have any info on how to make lumpy bumpy core spun Sari Silk roving or waste? Thank you
Great video! Just a quick question: Do you wet finish this yarn? If so, how? Thank you!
Omg ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love it! Can locks like these be spindle spun? I’m primarily a spindle spinner
I wonder whether you could thrum with locks? Perhaps it is a missed opportunity for spinners, but could be cool with a big colourful pile like this!
Oh, absolutely! There are so many awesome things to do!
Gorgeous colours and style 😍 👌 in love with that green and purple/plum yarn. Have you got a link to that maker, wondering ?
💗🧶💗
I don't, one of my subscribers generously hand dyed it and set it to me as a gift, but they don't have a shop or anything. 💜🐑🌼💖
Love the long wool. I love save them shave them. My question I’m washing a Lincoln long wool It smells like wet dog 🐶. I used scour power three times and rinse to still smells like wet dog Others have not smelled like this. Yes this is ewe fleece. What can use to get rid of smell? Love the the yarn beautiful colors
Unicorn is my usual go-to. Sometimes vinegar helps too. I would also check that your water is hot enough and you are using enough of it. Maybe you can also try trying them outside in the sun?
Thank you so much for this video, I love the way you spin the locks unto themselves. I only was aware of core spinning them. I do have a question, you mention you spin counter-clockwise. I don't understand what difference that makes, either direction you get the twist, right? I think I'm missing something about this.
I know that when I'm knitting in the round, my yarn can untwist if it is spun clockwise so if I know I'll be using a single without plying, I spin counterclockwise. For a lot of yarn, especially high twist yarns, it might not matter as much. 💖🧶😊
@@JillianEve Thanks so much, that makes sense now.
Fingerless MITTS is the term I'm most familiar with.
I see that too, but mittens don't have fingers? 🤔🤔🤔🤣
They are definitely mittens... fingerless gloves have the individual fingers started.
I vote topless mittens lol! But maybe open mittens? Or touch screen mittens? Or mini mittens (as in miniskirt) Oh boy...hahaha... someone stop me!
Do you have any tips for spinning locks with a drop spindle?
Yes, I like to use a larger and wider whorl so my spindle spins a bit slower. That helps me keep track of all the locks in my hand. Then I do pretty much the same as I do with the wheel. I let the twist grab each lock, and draft them out into the yarn. 🧶💜🌷🐑
@@JillianEve thank you so much for the advice! I have a lovely brown/gold fleece and was thinking this might be a good way to keep the colours more distinct, I will give it a try.
The yarn is super cute! Is it strong enough to make a pompom? I think the hat would be complete with a matching lockful pompom!
Loved the mini debate: Fingerless mittens? Fingerless gloves, topless mittens. Hahahha!
I think you made topless mittens because fingerless gloves do have the fingers started...hu? hu?!
Oh! I wish I had saved more of the locks, I could have needle felted a pom pom! 😆 Topless mittens
Here in Canada I make those fingerless mitts all the time. I call them wrist warmers 🤷♀️
Could you loom knit with this yarn ?
I think you could! Definitely worth trying it out to see!
Why does that make me think of baskin robbins
Forbidden icecream
I think that we’ve all suffered from rambunctious yarn
Are this goat locks or sheep locks?
These weren't marked, but they felt more like sheep's wool to me. I'm just guessing though. 🐑🐐🧐💖
@@JillianEve oh they’re gorgeous either way! I have locks from sheep I think in my fiber stash and I have a ton of goat locks
