    With the economy the way it is and getting worse by the day (at least where I live in Southern California), I think this may be the year that I make my own planner. I know my style (vertical) and like to decorate and have created my own covers along the way.
    I'm thinking of sticking with the Take a Note, but having a few bullet journals (Because I bought too many dang Rhodia journals this year that I haven't touched), and creating a few disc planners for a few dollars.
    I have used several digital calendar apps to keep it all together, and lots of worksheets (chores, spring cleaning, projects).
    It's not in the planning so much but in the doing.
    It's almost cyclical, btw, the "planner season" and then in January, the "planner regrets". If people used cash for all of this, what would they buy? LOL. They sure wouldn't have bought every Tomoe River paper planner and Hobonichi haul, I tell you that. It's not normal to spend over $800 on planners. I mean, Lochby planners are $10 and it's 68 gsm Tomoe River paper.
    Where are the planner channels who bought all the Hobonichi and then you see them with Paper Tess, or Wonderland, or by June have abandoned it all and are back in a bullet journal? It's nuts. I buy three planners in November and stick with it for a year at least That's how it's been before there was a planner community back in the 1990s.

    • @mvillalobos14
      @mvillalobos14 Місяць тому +10

      Hard agree! I’m one of those people. I had to revisit my spending this month and realized it’s not a “how are people affording all these planners?” But rather let’s look at the marketing to make people feel like they NEED to try a new system. The FOMO is huge in this community. No, I don’t need to try 10 different planners! I just need to see things for how they are and realize it’s all business. Know what works for you and stick to it. Set a budget and realize too that other things in life matter more than a notebook. I think a lot of people (including myself) lose sight of this.

    • @mvillalobos14
      @mvillalobos14 Місяць тому +10

      To add to this, negative and detrimental spending habits are encouraged in this community (and many others too). If you go to a friend and tell them you can’t decided between two planners the answer most of the time is “why not both? 🤪” “the more the merrier” “options are good” etc.
      We need a shift in how we think about choosing a system and sticking with it.
      Again, I include myself in all of this.

      @@mvillalobos14 Last year was my first foray into this side of UA-cam, the stationery, and Tomoe River Planner side, and I was intrigued by the passion for the Hobonichi. It was everywhere. I subscribed to about a dozen channels.
      I wanted to be inspired by their light deco styles and enthusiasm for stationery.
      It was haul after haul after haul. I literally told one woman, "Did you just spend $400 on...a cover and planner from Hobonichi, and accessories? But you just ordered every size from Wonderland, Papertess, and now Sterling Ink? This is hard to believe." The backlash I used to get. I didn't care. I wanted to make sure that others out there knew that this wasn't normal.
      Sterling Ink. I like Catherine a lot and will buy one next year, but I know what I need it for. Work, basically.
      The UA-camr model (those who don't have any work, but use affiliate codes and views for $$$) is toxic. They'll say whatever they need to continue to get free stuff from the company OR to upsell to their "audience" and create the frenzy that they're a part of.
      I'd prefer to see planners talk about stationery and how they're using their 3 or 4 planners (Work planner, Personal, Health, etc...).

    • @michelleadams5609
      @michelleadams5609 Місяць тому +3

      @@mvillalobos14 Definitely. It's easy to get excited about new stuff, but a system that you find that works for you...that's gold. It's possible that the system you love won't fit in the planner you like most and that's helpful to know what you need.
      NGL, I'm struggling financially, so setting a budget, sticking to it is a must, including having less time to watch planner channels. LOL

    • @unichan5
      @unichan5 Місяць тому +4

      And here I was, thinking I was an outlier. I also don‘t think it‘s normal to have six or seven additional planners lying around, especially if they are different systems as well! Last year, I bought one Hobonichi A6 (my go-to for years and years) and bought a weeks from someone else. Over the course of this year, I realized that I‘m mostly memory keeping in it and will probably switch to a blank notebook next year (of which I own plenty). It won‘t stop me from checking out the preview and maybe even getting a cover but I know myself and that I won‘t use more than three planners at once, even if I put everything in its own separate book.
      Pretty sure that almost no planner youtubers get a kick-back from Hobonichi but it‘s so strange how much the consumerism blew up recently, although we supposedly all paired down during the pandemic? And let‘s face it, hauls get views to no end, especially once the new releases roll in, so I understand it from that point of view. But I prefer watching people use their stuff instead of showing off blank pages.

    My ideal planner setup is a hybrid digital/paper system that I don't think exists yet but probably could, if not now then soon. I wish I could do all my planning on paper, scan it with my phone camera, it digitizes it and makes it searchable (recognizes my handwriting) and updates it to my Google calendar that I share with my family, as well as on screens that take the place of family calendars in the kitchen or hallway.

    I started this year trying all kinds of things and I've noticed that I've gone for complete customization. I'm making my own things when it comes to daily planning and todo stuff. Only reason I would go out and buy premade stuff now is for journaling purposes because I prefer certain kinds of paper. Like a Tomoe River paper or something else super thin. I think the main thing I'll be getting for my planning will be a new printer so I can do double sided printing. My current one 'can' do that, but the position of the paper is always off

Time seems tangible now and not something that flies around in the ether. I’m switching from hobonichi cousin Avec to Jibun Techo. I’ve tried hobonichi cousin for 4 years now, 2 full year cousins, 1 day free a5, 1 day free a6, 1 cousin avec, 1 weeks. It’s an awesome planner but what I need is an A5 size of the weeklies with undated graph paper. I need half the cousin and half the days free in A5 hahaha
    So this year my planner stack is as follows
    1. Jibun Techo Diary (will be my scheduler)
    2. A plain Hobonichi Graph paper notebook(will be my bullet journal)
    3. Take-A-Note Planner (faith journal)

Then Soon capping the invented what I actually wanted (the B6 vertical weekly) and I'll be going into my third year in that model for everything, then Hobonichi Weeks for work. Agendio offers tons of customization (almost to the point of being overwhelming) and offers a spiral bound option. I get my custom work planner unbound and unpunched from them so I can punch it and use it in my discbound planner, my preferred binding for being able to both fold back on itself and add/remove/rearrange the contents. Or, if you really want to convert a hardbound planner, Staples will cut the spine off and make it spiral bound for a reasonable price.

    I use hyperlinked PDFs in Samsung Notes for my planner. (Similar apps are Goodnotes and Notability.) It's got all the benefits of paper and digital.
    I primarily use it on my Samsung tablet. I have a paper feel screen cover and write with the S-pen. It feels pretty close to writing with pen and paper, and I'm still writing things out longhand.
    But, I can erase mistakes (which bug the heck out of me when I write on paper). I can move things around, like moving tasks to the next day or changing appointment times.
    And, it syncs to the cloud, so I can use it on my phone (which also uses an S-pen) when I'm out and about. I don't have to worry about remembering my planner or carrying a bag so I can have it with me.
    Plus, pages like my quotes or other notes I can copy from one year to the next.

    I don’t know what to select for 2025 but I know I want an undated vertical planner in A5 with 4x4 grid if possible. However, I don’t think my perfect planner exists.
    My perfect planner: A5 undated vertical layout planner with 200-300 blank grid pages or a blank version of the Take a Notes planner with extra pages at the end. The goals, yearly and monthly calendars are fine upfront but I don’t like too many blank pages in the beginning, which I may not use and have to repurpose.
    The big change is that I want my weeks and accompanying notes to be grouped together so I don’t have to flip to the back to find my notes. So I would like the vertical layout week to have 2 (or 4) blank grid pages after each week to jot down notes . And 100-200 blank grid pages at the end of the planner. I don’t have enough patience to draw out layouts hence my search for a planner.
    For 2024, I missed the undated Common Planner pre-order so I was contemplating the Take a Note either in A5 or B6, undated B6 Wonderland 222 or undated B6 Aura Estelle. I couldn’t find any Take a note planners locally when i finally made up my mind so I wound up with the B6 vertical Aura Estelle.
    I stopped using the Aura Estelle after 3 months because I write too large for the grid and running out of space each week. Then, I purchased a 2024 N1 Horizontal Common Planner. I liked the height but it is too narrow. I also didn’t use my planner for almost a month so waste of paper. I am still using the N1 but it is annoying to have to flip back to the end to continue my notes.

I wish I could have found hobonichi techo in A5 size too to try but that didn't happen.
    I need the vertical spread for my week and I think I Iike to have week with 24 hour day in my carry on planner. It is nice to see in where things are going timewise inside my day. It gives me better picture from that when I see it visually. I just wish that I could find the jibun techo in full A5 size bc just now I don't see myself using the daily section much. My monthly is dated, for appointments, etc. My schedule is weird but predictable- my schedule depends on the days which are self-similar, and none of the days are similar to each other. So the undated vertical weekly lets me put all my mondays together, tuesdays together, etc. I’m only writing repetitive tasks and scheduling once and can just draw a line across. Also because I work Saturdays and a lot of planners chop off weekend days, so i get a full vertical for saturdays this way, and can skip a page for my non-work weekday which is always a waste of space in a dated planner. It took me YEARS to figure out this method for myself. I’ve used printables or printed my own in the past, but the slim booklet size tempted me and it has worked great. *edit* I also think these would be great for those who need that format sometimes for a highly scheduled day, but not every day for the whole year. They are thin enough to just tuck in my personal planner like a fat bookmark.

    I definitely see people using more rings and discs this year but with more interest in putting together their own planners as opposed to the prepackaged ones. I agree that I’m seeing a lot more undated options and also a lot more companies that offer many sizes, as opposed to just A5 and B6.

    In the last 6 months, I’ve switched over to using just a Filofax refillable notebook. I have daily pages handwritten in the front (I don’t try to make these particularly artistic, like some of the fancy bullet journals, but I do use colour and paste things in) - this section is a combined daily diary (appointments & to-dos) and artistic journal (freeform writing, quick ideas, drawing or diagramming) and ultimately goes up on my website as part of a PhD project on making a composer’s everyday life visible to others. Then I have a section of blank pages, for random note-taking, then weekly and monthly planning sections (currently handwritten but I’m planning on creating printable versions eventually to save some time). Because I can add any type of paper anywhere in the book, I also keep a selection of pre-printed paper (colourful brochures, pages from fallen-apart novels, etc.) in the back which I can insert as needed for altered-book journaling, which I have found helpful in the past but no longer want to carry around a separate volume for something I only do occasionally. All this in just one slim(mish) book that fits nicely in whatever bag I’m using!

    I've gone back and forth on dated and undated (did a video even!), I kept skipping days so tried undated but then discovered that the dates/structure gave me motivation. It really is trial and error 😆... and also different season in our lives.
    Customisable gets overwhelming for me, and I have the planners/diaries types I love anyway. I love that the option is out there for people - might help in really zeroing on what works for them.

    This might feel a little early for most people, but my busiest time of the year is October through January, so I appreciate an early start, lol. I’ll keep using the same discbound planner inserts from Agendio for my work planner that I’ve used for the last six years. For personal planning, I switched from Hobonichi weeks last year to Filofax this year and am open to insert options as I continue to dial in my system. This year, I’ve been using the Filofax inserts that came with the binder, but I think I want to branch out in 2025. For my dailies, which includes a fair amount of wellness tracking, I’ve been using Pen + Gear Undated Daily Planners - one month to a passport-sized booklet, 12 different colored booklets in a slip case for just under $6. I tuck the month into my Filofax or take it out on its own. I bought two sets, so I’m covered for daily planning for the nearly the next two years!

I like the handy size and I feel no guilt if I left some pages empty, like in bigger notebooks. I have a separate planner for work and there I have a Moleskine Pro with months AND weeks. The perfect planner for work dates and project-planning. I like Moleskine a lot 😅

    Have you ever tried using a digital notebook like a Remarkable or Supernote? It seems like that would be a good way to kind of bridge the gap between paper and digital so you're not going through all of your notes twice.

  • @mikeschumacher

    Not many changes for me for the moment. Work is separate from personal and is all-digital due to the nature of the work. Personal stuff is digital for appointments (Apple Calendar) and notes (mostly Obsidian but some Notion). I wish Notion Calendar had more functionality and integration than it does today.
    Might start carrying a notebook for writing ideas on a space-available basis, and look into a planner for time logging and journaling.

    I switched to hobonichi plain notebook (Keiko Shibata Who Is it) last March for jounaling, and i def won't finished that this year, so I'd probabpy not buy one for journaling, unless the plain notebook designs are tempting (i'd prob buy and just store when i run out with my current). For work, i currently thinking of switching to plain small size planner, prob a hobo a6 plain or kinbor week plain, I'm currently using the kinbor weeks and it had been working for the past months, but our system at work kinda changed which makes my kinbor set up not work anymore, so I think a more flexible notebook would work now - with more focus on notetaking.
    Def either hobo or kinbor, i just think the paper and grid sizes for those 2, works well for my tiny handwriting. And the just love the paper quality... i know some have complaints about the new tomoe, but i've been loving it tbh, as a lefty, i find it that it dries faster than the old paper.

    I don't understand how on earth people function with all these planners. I pick one planner every year and make it work. I like things to be mostly functional but I challenge myself to decorate with doodles, ink colors etc to jazz it up. This year I did buy an 18 month planner to use for garden planning, weather, plant & harvest, seed inventory and maybe journal a bit but even that kinda stresses me out a bit because i dont want that to be a wasteful purchase - i think i will use for multiple years sine the days of the week wont matter so much as the day of the year/harvest cycle. I wonder if some of the minute tracking in the planning world is a way of feeling in control in an out of control world. Just some random Sunday thoughts.

      I'll add, this year I used a sterling ink, first time with the thin paper and it took some adjustment but ended up loving it and the flexibility. This year I'm about 95% sure I'll try just scribbles planner- and a maybe secondary notebook for jotting down notes, working lists. I have some disc bound notebooks I am turning into reference 'binders' for those inevitable papers that I want to reference again - dog med dosing, kid sizing, gift ideas, packing lists - I don't want to recreate those every year or lose them in the digital world. I'm trying to shift more and more to reference and planner is just month week daily activities.

I have been using Hobinechi Cousin planners for several years. My biggest issue is that I am constantly flipping back and forth between the monthly, weekly and daily pages. I wanted a planner that has them all together rather than separate. The justscribble planner has them together which appeals to me. In addition, I like the two book idea.
